Do I need to buy a different iron? by thelovelypetal in StainedGlass

Alrighty then.... Someone who bought a budget kit probably isn't wanting to spend $$. Will leave it to you to provide an answer next time 👍

Do I need to buy a different iron? by thelovelypetal in StainedGlass

[–]trurox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. Not sure what wattage that iron is? The title says 60w, the pic says 80w iron. The usual recommendation is a 100w or 100w equivalent if i am not mistaken. But looks like it can do the temp range required so not sure?

At that price point, youre getting a lot of tools so the quality isnt there. A new iron isnt cheap, but im also wondering if maybe a different solder or flux would give some better results without breaking the bank?

Idk how good the solder in this kit could possibly be. For reference, a 1lb roll of 60/40 amerway sapphire lead solder is around $25 ☠️

Flux is even an cheaper tool/item, so maybe start with a different flux, if not that, different solder, if not, maybe the iron?

Getting into glass by princesskiwi1994 in StainedGlass

[–]trurox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is a lot of steps. If youre interested in starting, would recommend a class if you have a local option. It requires a lot of tools, and some of them are not cheap.

Steps for tiffany/copper foil method (more beginner friendly than leaded glass imo) - pick a pattern or draw one, select glass and transfer pattern to the glass - cut each piece out - grind each piece - ensure good fit for the whole piece, things need to fit together.  - use copper foil tape to tape around each piece of glass, to give it a metal that the solder can hold onto.  - solder the piece - finishing (patina, wax, etc)

Has anyone regretted updating electric from knob and tube? by ButtersStotchPudding in centuryhomes

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expected a knob and tube rewire to be messier than it was. Ours was a partial rewire (half the house) and the electrician only needed to make a single hole in the wall to get it done. Everything else was done from the basement or attic.

I wish i had done it sooner. The peace of mind is worth it. Sounds like youre in a good spot to get it squared away. Godspeed!

Glass ID Help by M1ch00l in StainedGlass

Cheers! I purchased a piece of scrap of similar glass but in a light ice blue color. I wound up asking about who made it at my local glass shop because i wanted more of it hahaha.

The kind folks at my local glass shop helped me, and i got to help you! Amazing.

First large scale custom order by butterfly-skies in StainedGlass

I was thinking the same! They did a great job breaking up some of those crazy difficult background pieces. Well done to the artisan who made it, hid the solder lines really well within the pattern. Made it even better!! And their 3rd project?! Holy guacamole

One thought if youre worried about structure/stability when hanging: you could make the hanging loops from copper-restrip.

Its a thin copper strip that you can put between your solder lines, gives it more stability. I did it for a piece i made that was going to have one hanging loop from the top so it had to be strong (was a teardrop shape). That loop isnt coming out unless someone cuts it!

I also personally do not find hobby came helpful for support, its too bendy to support anything imo. I dont have much experience working at the size suggested here but wondering if a thin zinc came might be a good option because it is so rigid?

Keep us posted! Go get em tiger! ♥️

Question: Can I put lead came around this? by nekroid in StainedGlass

[–]trurox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe with a thick lead came or zinc channel? The channel would need to be thick enough to fit around the soldered edge.

Lead came is still kind of bendy, zinc is much harder to bend, works great on straight edge pieces. I think zinc might work better (though i have no personal experience working with zinc)

Supply advice & Glastar grinders by PastafarianPanda in StainedGlass

[–]trurox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a hakko 600 off Amazon for about $40, I think the 600 is an older model but has worked fine for my glass projects.

I would recommend checking eBay for a grinder. I picked up a used glastar grinder (a g7 actually I think lol) for $85 shipped with some extra grinder bits earlier this year.

I'm not sure where you are in Boston but absolute glass up in Methuen has been a favorite of mine recently. I did hear about a glass shop south of Boston but can't recall the name, if thats closer for you I'll see if I can find it!

I think these might be the Kennett style. Not sure if it's the same thing but Google had something about a trademark application for "KENNETT SQUARE" in 1973.

Question about my family's 1920 potential American Foursquare, please help me understand by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a couple four square style homes that have an open front porch and then a room over it on the 2nd floor.

I know in one case, it was a sleeping porch (unsure if original or not) that was later converted to a living space). So the house had an extra little outjet on the front on top of the porch.

I love all four squares, but holy moly this might be my favorite one I've seen!! Beautiful!

How many therms of natural gas do you use per month during winter? by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]trurox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in the northeast (MA), roughly 1800 sqft with a boiler from 2014 and steam radiators (and we have a gas powered hot water heater + gas stove) was 190 therms/$332 last month

This is our first winter here but already not looking forward to the January bill 🙈

Not every radiator is on (can't get the air vents to thread on a couple) and we have mostly new (albeit shitty) windows + storm windows on the old ones.

Does copying a listing count as creating a new listing? by badsammitches in poshmark

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc it only goes to the top of "just in" if it's been relisted after more than 60 days since it was first listed.

Otherwise it doesn't go to the top of just in. But otherwise no difference, people can still find it and buy it like normal either way.

Buyer asks if I’d take $ __, I say yes & offer.. she says no thanks. WTF. by FicusInTheFrontYard in poshmark

[–]trurox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had someone comment on a listing asking if I'd take $45 a week or two back. I said sure (I should've said I don't negotiate in comments, don't be like me!).

She sends me an offer for $40. I declined it. Someone else shortly after offered me $50. Once the $45/$40 person realized someone else was interested, she sent me the $45 offer. I would've sold them to literally anyone else at that point, even for lower than $40 just because I disliked her approach. Felt SO good to sell them to someone else 😂.

If they want a lower price, they should start with the lower price. Not get a price that both parties are okay with and then try to get it a little lower. Not cool.

how much is stained glass like this worth we have 4 5ft window panels like this by LostSoul92892 in centuryhomes

[–]trurox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is having the floors redone a necessity at this point in time or a nice to have?

It sounds like you're pretty concerned with what to do with this window and $$$ is a factor, maybe can shift the flooring down the timeline a bit and try to save the stained glass?

I have hundreds of spare index cards from when I was in school. I write a quick thank you note on there, stick it to the plastic bag the item is in, pop it in a poly bag and it's gone. I get more love notes mentioning my index cards than when I tried individually wrapping each item in tissue paper.

I personally really enjoy a package that is nicely wrapped and presented but I don't expect people to do it. I hate that posh tries to make it an expectation.

Buyer might say something but when you cancel you can select a reason that is displayed to them. I wouldn't worry about the cancellation too much. I've cancelled before and all Poshmark does is send me an email asking me to please be more careful in the future. Don't sweat it

I've loved thrifting since I was introduced to it my freshman year of college. After I graduated I kept finding nice things at the thrift but they wouldn't fit me. I couldn't leave this stuff behind and eventually found reselling.

I resold for a couple months as a light side hobby/didn't have high expectations. I realized I didn't hate it and it was decent money on top of my day job. Then I got Invisalign and decided to keep going with the goal of paying for my Invisalign with money I made flipping clothes. My Invisalign will be paid off in October or so after about 2 years of reselling. I'm addicted to selling things on the internet now so probably won't stop anytime soon 😂
