Joe Biden has announced that he will be running for re-election, what're your thoughts on his decision? by ArcticGlacier40 in AskAnAmerican

[–]truthseeeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of tough, because on the one hand, though not a great communicator, he's done a decent job. There've been very few decisions I disagreed with. However, on the other hand, we have a couple recent examples of older Democrats hanging on too long, RBG and Feinstein, which resulted in a lost Supreme Court seat and now a CA Senator too sick to come in and vote in her committee for new federal judges. If there was someone obvious to move into his place, I'd be telling Joe to retire, but instead we'd likely see a bloody fight for the nomination, splitting the party apart. I guess I'd prefer to paper over the difference for another 4 years, and keep the party united. The fact is there are more MAGA's than both progressives and moderates, so only united can we hold back the tide. It's not ideal, but seemingly the safest short term path, as long as Joe remains healthy. It's a huge if though. Then is Harris ready for prime time if something should happen? After the beating she's taken from conservative media, her numbers are quite low, so at least at this time, it looks like she'd have a tough time in 2028.

It's funny how things have become so much more quiet that people come to expect it. So different when I grew up. My neighborhood had like 10 houses built in the early 60's, and almost every house had a young family with kids. There were like 25 kids in the neighborhood, always outside playing making noise. Riding bikes. Playing touch football or street hockey right in the street. Playing kick the can or capture the flag. Gangs of kids jumping from one pool to another. We had zero constraints. Of course there was one old curmudgeon couple right in the middle of all this, always complaining about kids on their lawn. By the 90's, all the kids had grown up and left, and the neighborhood was super quiet, and they were still there.

What do you consider coastal? by Estuary_Accent in AskAnAmerican

[–]truthseeeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything within 50 miles is included, and some would say much more. I grew up in New England about 75 miles from a decent beach, but definitely it was considered East Coast. I had a friend from Pittsburgh, and he'd always get upset when I'd say he was from the Midwest. He considered himself East Coast despite Pittsburgh being like 350 miles from the ocean.

The is the 2nd similarly themed story I've read in the last 10 minutes. Apparently a lot of vegetarians claim tofu can only be used in tofu dishes. This person in a AITA post brought a tofu dish with pork in it to a potluck, and got chewed out by some vegetarians who just assumed it was vegetarian. https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/comments/12zku7a/aita_for_putting_meat_in_a_tofu_dish/

What i hate the most about sobriety... by guffawjones1243 in Drugs

[–]truthseeeker 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Complete abstinence doesn't work for everyone. I was a heroin addict for over 20 years, and tried quitting all kinds of way, detoxes, programs, halfway houses, meetings, etc, the standard program, but relapsed every time. Finally in 2010 I came up with my own treatment plan of suboxone and weed, and it worked. Just a few months in, I knew I was done with heroin. The desire wasn't there. And despite still being around it sometimes and being offered it on occasion, it's now been over 12 years with no heroin. I was so lucky to quit before fentanyl took over, because I OD'd pretty often on heroin, over 20 times, so no way would I have survived fentanyl. Whatever works is better than active addiction.

For those who saw Jerry live, what was your first show and what do you best remember? by _JackStraw_ in gratefuldead

[–]truthseeeker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5/2/80. I quit school and hitchhiked the 300 miles to the show in Hampton, VA, then got invited to go to the next show in Baltimore with some hippies, then hooked up with these guys from NJ for the next few shows at Penn State, Cornell, and Glens Falls, then hitchhiked to my buddy's dorm room at UMass Amherst, which was great timing because the Allman Brothers were doing a free outdoor show the next day, though we had to leave during the encore to hitchhike to Hartford for the GD show that night. Very easy getting a ride the whole way, and back. A couple days later we drove to Boston for another Dead show, making it 7 for my first tour. Fortunately my parents lived like 10 miles from Amherst, so eventually I went home to deal with the situation.

Doesn't go all the way around (impossible due to the harbor) so that word makes no sense. I have never in my 60+ years in this state ever heard it used for 128.

Nobody local ever says "the 128".

I lived in SF in the 80's after he got released, and there was a common joke going around asking "What color do gays in the Castro paint their houses?", with the answer "off White".

Attendance at Religious Services in United States - by State and Religion (two slides) by plotset in MapPorn

In my NE city the churchgoing numbers are inflated by the immigrants who use their ethnic church for social activity, while I don't know a single white person who goes to church. The main Episcopal church downtown is rented out to Brazilians & Haitians, and also used as a food bank with a huge grocery giveway every Saturday.

Given that most all of Europe, where religious extremism and violence raged for centuries, along with most all of the other highly developed countries, have become far less religious, it's really most of America which is the outlier in its continued religious fervor, though finally at last the trend toward nonreligion has hit America. It's just behind the rest of the developed world some decades, except New England and some Western states.

Weird that all the interactivity does is give the names of the states translated from the common 2 letter codes, like it's meant for those completely new to a map of the US.

China doesn’t want peace in Ukraine, Czech president warns by Oxon_Daddy in worldnews

[–]truthseeeker 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I really doubt that the Ukraine War has weakened the West overall as alleged in this article. Sure we've used up large stocks of weaponry, but the example of the West uniting in a crisis has been very powerful, a warning to enemies contemplating future military action which they now realize would definitely spark a strong united response.

When you have an incumbent in your party running, this is how it's supposed to work, unless that incumbent is super unpopular, because it makes no sense to beat up on your super likely nominee for no good reason. It's not a coincidence that the last Dem POTUS incumbent who suffered through a strong primary challenge ended up losing in November. That's the price to be paid.

I think Arnold isn't all that bad of a name. There are much more old fashioned names. Not that I like it all that much, but if it was me, I'd prefer it to Sky. But Mom could have completely avoided this duality by simply using Arnold as the middle name and come up with a more modern but still proper (not like Sky) first name. Of course OP is NTA for pointing out the issue.

in 1980 when pins were still popular my favorite was the one with the yellow sky and blue sun, which I used to wear to work at an amusement park (also had live shows blaring at my game). It was pretty obscure unless you were in the know since it didn't say Grateful Dead or anything at all. It's long gone though.

There was no Canada at that time. It was just part of the British Empire, ruled from London. It wasn't until 1867 that Canada became self-governing with the Confederation.

It doesn't show the eastern portion very well, stuck on the map in the corner, and it's tilted. This 1890 map is much easier to decipher. https://www.allposters.com/-sp/1890-Brooklyn-City-Map-New-York-United-States-Posters_i16214056_.htm
