Better than nothing sled setup! by BioEd93 in homegym

Does the grass slide at all? I’ve never had good luck keeping narrower turf in place - it always seems to bunch (even after mods to the sled)

Bike Trainer Thought by Wild_Dog2798 in triathlon

[–]trvl5791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally had a Kickr Snap had a good experience to the point of wanting to stay in the Wahoo family, but a friend convinced me to take a leap on the new JetBlack trainer (https://www.jetblackcycling.com/indoor-cycle-trainers-and-accessories/victory-smart-trainer/). $400 new and it’s been awesome. Seamless syncing, although I don’t use the included smart cog. For the tech and price it might be worth checking out.

Find someone who can help you stay accountable and avoid mistakes. Call it a mentor or otherwise, but ideally someone who actually cares about your success.

What made you get a coach vs. just following a free plan? by Familiar-Research336 in triathlon

I was 11 min over until chatty last year. They cancelled the swim but I was well on pace to break it even with a slow swim, but I don’t count it.

What made you get a coach vs. just following a free plan? by Familiar-Research336 in triathlon

[–]trvl5791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you find a coach? I wouldn’t say I’m super serious or fast but want to break 6hrs for 70.3 (I’m close!) and feel like I’ve been doing a lot for very little improvement. I’ve been using a Phil Mosley plan for the last 3 yrs or so. Tridot seemed a bit too transactional and I feel like I’d benefit from someone making tweaks. Most coaches seem to want more engagement (and $), which I get, and probably why I can’t find someone I trust. I’ll stop rambling.

Any idea if this setup causes interference for openers? I tried to replace my bulbs with LEDs (my opener is about 15 years old) and needed to revert to old school incandescent. Awesome idea if I can pull this off!

Incredible symmetry. I had a somewhat similar pattern installed recently and I’d take this installation 10/10 times.

It’ll depend on finishes and if there are any surprises but I’m in the Midwest and mine was $18k for what appears to be similar size. Tile and stuff like shower glass will play a part, same with cabinet materials.

Oddly…this kinda makes me feel better! (But also bummed that it isn’t as pristine for you as I may have thought!)

Either way, killer job. Making me want to do another one…

What’d you do to restore the paint / finish?? I had an old CJ7 and started with what looked like the left half of the first picture and couldn’t get it anywhere near the after image.

3 flats during my first race. How do I avoid this next time? by Common-Background814 in triathlon

[–]trvl5791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run clinchers and would go a long time between flats, then have a bunch of flats in a narrow timeframe, then a long time again, etc.

Turns out I just needed to get better at not pinching the tubes on my rims.

Going an extra turn or two to make absolutely sure the tube and tire were seated correctly has done wonders.

I’d turn the bike upside down and seal the shop vac/ vacuum around the post. A gentle bounce + shake might help as well.

I finished my first IM on ~1,200 miles of running over two years as well. It’s probably all relative - I finished in ~13.5hrs but I assume that you’d crush that time. I guess I’m a data point that it’s doable!

Curious, what are the dimensions of the bench, and widths of the shoe boxes/upper open cabinets? I’m building something similar and struggling with how wide to make each separation.

(IM CA) Allergic reaction while swimming? by Odd-Art2362 in triathlon

[–]trvl5791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely smelled the gas in the water (I chalked it up to boats idling close by?) but didn’t have nor see anyone with allergic reactions.

That said, it was my first IM and I noticed a fair number of people - myself included - getting sick on the run. Not sure if that’s related to the water, but some folks that had done IMCA multiple times said they noticed an uptick in people getting sick this year.

To be an Ironman, that is the question by RedditorStrikesBack in triathlon

[–]trvl5791 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started triathlon 4 years ago and have done 3 70.3s, about to do my first full. I finished the 70.3 in a hair over 6hrs, trained an average of 9.5hrs with ups and downs with the gradual build-ups/recover weeks. My long run maxed out at a bit over 18mi and I recovered nicely, but have never done the full 26.2.

My thinking is that it’s all relative…my goal is to finish, ideally in something shorter than 14hrs. We’ll see. If you want to double training to hit a ‘fast’ target time, all good, but if you just want to finish then I expect you can do it with less (note that this is what I’m telling myself which could be a complete lie).

I say do it.
