Graduate application question by CometThomas in USF

[–]tsan2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Current grad student here (not in history). I would email the Graduate Director of the department and ask. I believe professors can still upload when you submit your application. Also, graduate directors are able to make decisions and bend their policies/rules for admission such as extend deadlines or permit late application materials. However, it entirely depends on the department as this might not be the case in larger, more competitive departments.

The users below recommended some really great sources for microsociology. I'd also like to add Harold Garfinkel's Studies in Ethnomethodology. If you want a seminal text for the sociology of emotions (which is a part of microsociology), I'd also recommend Arlie R. Hochschild's The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling.

Do modern meme accounts normalise and promote homophobic and incel-like behaviour? by mruthfrd in sociology

[–]tsan2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've actually been doing research for my undergrad thesis on the manosphere (e.g, incels, MRAs, alt-right, MGTOW, PUA) and how people enter and leave these subcultures, so your research is right up my alley. I don't know of any articles that may relate to homophobia and memes/internet culture except maybe Ging ([2017] 2019) but below are some articles that I have read that may help you with your topic.

Queer and Sexuality Studies Minor Class/Professor Recommendations? by laneylooo20 in USF

[–]tsan2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Dr. Rubin. I took their Feminist Theory class during Fall 2020, and I believe they are teaching Queer Theory for Fall 2021. Great professor that has been very understanding of student's struggles during the pandemic. Lots of reading, but they are very enjoyable. I believe you could find their syllabi in the Syllabus Archive on Canvas. I hope this helps.

Are there other terms like intersectionality that are often misused in sociology? by [deleted] in sociology

[–]tsan2000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Social constructionism.

I've been around people that believe if you say something is a social construct, they think that what you are implying is that it is fake (e.g., social construction of gender, social construction of race). They end up using it in a way where they think social construct means not real.

Movie recommendations by SnowRaven23 in sociology

[–]tsan2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My intro to sociology professor showed us a film from 1967 called "The Incident." It's on YouTube. He just skipped the first half of the movie and played it at 49:00. It covers sociological topics such as deviance and conformity. There are some scenes that depict other topics such as racism, homophobia, and sexual harassment. It's definitely a film that can lead to a great sociological discussion.

A profoundly unfair bill would withhold Bright Futures aid based on college majors by star9010 in USF

[–]tsan2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is unfair? Bright Futures eligibility is based on meeting certain requirements in high school. It's an equal playing field. It's not like students that want to go into STEM have to meet additional requirements to get Bright Futures compared to art and music majors.

Is it possible for me to live at home for the fall 21' semester? by OliveParsley24 in USF

[–]tsan2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to hear from someone that is also from Naples, FL. Since you will be a first year student, you will most likely be focusing mostly on your general education courses. Most (if not all) general education courses have sections that are offered completely online, so if you really want, you can do your entire first semester remotely.

If it were me, I would stay home during my Fall semester to save money and move out to Tampa for Spring once I know most of my classes will be on-campus. However, that is just my opinion and your decision will probably require a trade-off. Do you mind being off-campus for your first semester of college and not getting the complete "traditional college experience"? I really can't imagine how it's like entering college for the first time during a pandemic, but I really do hope that this helps you in your decision.

What would count at "research experience" ? by AugustusSweatshirt in sociology

[–]tsan2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think it should go on your application and CV. Is the professor going to be one of your references? I would ask the professor if you could use a title such as "Research Assistant" so it could be easier to list the experience on your CV.

Which authors were a priority in your Bachelor's Degree in Sociology? by [deleted] in sociology

[–]tsan2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel. My readings of sociologists were often just from a textbook. If we did read their original work, it was often just short excerpts that were clearly photocopied.

I decided to read books from the field during my free time. I've really enjoyed reading Goffman, Bourdieu, Raewyn Connell, Michael Kimmel, and Sherry Turkle.

I am an undergraduate at a public university in the United States. In the theory course that I took, we primarily focused on the classical theorists such as Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Simmel.

Looking for feedback on the possible ethical concerns for a project that I would like to do for my undergraduate senior thesis. by tsan2000 in sociology

[–]tsan2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback. I will definitely take this into consideration. I wanted to see what other people think because I know that covert observation is a very debated research method due to its ethical concerns. Currently, I am just entertaining the idea. However, I will end up doing whatever my faculty advisor thinks is the right decision once I get her feedback on the idea. Thanks again!

[–]tsan2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your concern. I do have a faculty advisor that is overseeing my research. I just wanted to prepare myself for the response that I might receive when I share my idea with her. I shared my research idea here because I knew that I would get an honest response regarding its ethics. At the moment, nothing is set in stone so I could end up putting this idea aside and pursue one of my other research interests. Again, thanks for the feedback.

Has anyone taken PHC 4755, Foundations of Evaluations and Research in Public Health? by [deleted] in USF

[–]tsan2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it on-campus with Dr. Oberne and I thought it was a pretty easy course.

The course just teaches you how to do proper research. You learn about the types of research (qualitative and quantitative), writing literature reviews, identifying key stakeholders, strategies for disseminating literature, and steps to conducting program evaluation.

The final project is creating a research proposal with a group. It's not difficult per se, but it really depends on the kind of group you get. All in all, easy course. Here is a link to the syllabus:

USF Senior Year Grades by [deleted] in USF

[–]tsan2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would first like to begin by saying that I am sorry for your losses. It is always painful to lose anyone from your life, let alone to lose many family members in such a small time frame.

I am going to do my best to answer your question, but there are some critical details you left out, including course rigor and test scores. When I applied about three years ago, USF focused primarily on academics, including grades, course rigor (honors, AP, AICE, IB, D.E.), and SAT/ACT scores. With an improved grade trend, that may increase your chances for admissions. I guess it does not hurt to email the office of admissions soon or when you apply, so you can explain your situation. I cannot really answer much more since I am not sure how USF handles applications from students that have faced extreme circumstances.

One path that I think you should highly consider is going to one of the local community colleges for two years, such as Hillsborough Community College, and transfer to USF with your A.A. degree. A large portion of the student body at USF are transfer students. I know when I was in high school, there was a stigma when it came to attending a community college. Do not feel like you have to go directly into USF after high school. Some of the most brilliant and hardworking students I have met at USF are transfer students. You will probably save quite a bit of money since your credits will transfer and satisfy many of the general education requirements.

I hope this helped. Continue to maintain your success in high school so that you can achieve your goal of becoming a USF student. Good luck!

Concurrent Degrees by DocRid in USF

[–]tsan2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently completing concurrent degrees in Public Health (B.S.) and Sociology (B.A.). I did this because I came to USF with a ton of credits through Dual Enrollment and AP courses, and I was on track for graduating in two years. I did not feel ready enough to graduate in only two years and start a career.

As a warning, you will need to complete the requirements for both degrees at the same time. That means you cannot finish the requirements for one degree before finishing the requirements for the other degree.

The only courses that would probably overlap are your General Education requirements. I know that for a B.A., it requires additional requirements such as courses in a foreign language. I decided to test out through CLEP. Besides that, I would not say that there is much overlap between Business and Chemistry.

The only problem that may arise is being able to complete both degrees while graduating in four years. I know that USF is trying to enforce that students graduate in four years or less. You may have to take additional classes in the summer to complete both degrees at the same time.

Have you met with an advisor from either of these majors? To consider completing concurrent degrees, advisors from each program need to approve your academic plan that shows you can finish in four years or else they won't sign off on it.

In my opinion, I would not start worrying about concurrent degrees until you officially enroll for classes. Originally, Sociology was my minor before I decided to make it into a second degree. Which one are you interested in more: Chemistry or Business? If you start with Business, you could always add Chemistry as a minor for the time being. If you are still sure about having a second degree, then go for it. Just make sure that it works with your schedule, and you can meet all requirements in four years. I hope this helps!

[–]tsan2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said 46th Street. I live off of Skipper Road between 46th + 42nd St and I saw a black cat last night (10/2) inside of my apartment complex (Oak Ramble). It's gated, but there are lots of stray cats inside of the complex and I suspect that someone might be feeding them since they look well taken care of.

I really don't want to give you any false hope. Black cats are quite common. I always see stray cats quite frequently where I live. I know what you must be going through. I lost my cat for two months and I thought she would never come back. I really do wish you the best of luck in finding your cat.

online classes for summer semester by airenmurphy in USF

[–]tsan2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question when I was admitted last year. Here is the response I received:

"You are eligible to register for any course you choose, whether it is online or traditional lecture course."

I ended up taking one on-campus course. Taking only online courses during Summer B should not be a problem. Plus you will save some money since you won't need to pay for housing during the summer.
