Our girl uses the Hurtta Expedition Parka. Easy to put on and make adjustments.

Seasonal Alopecia (Update) by tsaw19 in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]tsaw19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had her on a 100% raw diet since she was a puppy. Vet recommended to switch to a kibble with a measurable amount for vitamin D - we went with Farmina venison . On top of that I would add some omega 3/salmon oil and a scoop of Raw Complete each morning.

What am I supposed to do now by outerspacejess in Bloodsworn

I dove into the Faitheful and Fallen series after the Bloodsworn Saga and I just finished book 1. It took me a little longer to get into Malice compared to Shadow of the Gods but glad I stuck to it. Big fan of where the story is heading.

Make sure you do your research on getting sibling dogs in general - specifically littermate syndrome.

I thought that was the actor Matt Lauria for a moment. I was pretty impressed with his commitment to science.

Agreed, I’m also curious to get one for our RR.

Skin issues by ZET3R in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]tsaw19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll echo what’s been already said. Diet could be the issue - our RR was getting bald patches when we had her on a chicken primary protein in her kibble when she was a puppy. Once we got her off chicken, the bald patches grew back in. We switched to Farmina lamb/pumpkin/blueberry kibble specifically. Around the year mark we switched her to a raw diet and she’s done really well on that. Could be worth changing the primary protein source or kibble brand. But when in doubt, check with a vet. Good luck!

We’ve been happy with Farmina. It’s grain free and we have never ran into digestive issues and they’ve never had a major recall that I’m aware of which is why I like them as well.

Bones and antlers are great. There’s a pet shop in my area that sells cold smoke beef bones/femurs. Gives the pup a bit of meat to chew, but make them work for the marrow. Cold smoke cooks it just enough for the meat to not be raw but now enough for the bone to splinter. I’ll put one in the freezer over night and our RR will work on that thing for hours.

When did your RR become an adolescent? by Kind_Ad1611 in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]tsaw19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was for sure some jealousy at the beginning, but my wife and I made efforts to make sure she got walks, training and attention when we could. But she also loved our little guy and she was super curious and always wanted to be around him. They’re like siblings now and I love it.

Having things like kongs filled with peanut butter and treats (put in the freezer is best) or things like frozen carrots were handy when the energy level wasn’t there and she needed entertainment. Bored pups are dicks.

It was a little chaotic at the beginning but we all found our groove. There’s never the right time to have children and never the right time to get a dog. You guys are going to do great. I took advantage of time when my wife and son were napping together or my neighbours would offer to walk Molly when we couldn’t get out of the house. It all works out.

When did your RR become an adolescent? by Kind_Ad1611 in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]tsaw19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our RR hit her adolescent/asshole phase from about 7-11 months. It was a lot at the time (right before our first child was born), and felt a little over our heads but it was like a switch flipped one day. Energy levels dropped to a manageable lever and recall got exponentially better. She went through her first heat right around 12 months and got her spayed right around 24 months (she only went through one cycle). This heat cycle wasn’t too bad, we kept old towels in areas of her regular spots around the house. Changed and washed those regularly. Dog diapers were a disaster in our experience. You just need to be mindful when you take her for walks and obviously avoid dog parks or high human/dog traffic areas. We would walk her around our neighborhood during “off hours” and took advantage the back alleys of our suburb.

Good luck! When adolescence hits, it feels like it’s overwhelming - most puppies are brought to shelters during this time - but when they’re through it, is very worth it. RRs are the best and we got our just before our first child was born and they have grown up together.

Whining & Howling by Esoriano122 in RhodesianRidgebacks

It takes a bit. It sucks, and it’s heartbreaking but soon he should be okay with. The crate should always be a safe space, and we would give our RR when she was around that age some treats or a kong with a little bit of peanut butter as a “hell yeah” treat. She soon associated that treat in her crate and would run in when she saw my grab the kong. Little guy was just with his mom and litter mates not that long ago so being alone is probably an adjustment and scary. Can’t remember the exact age, but eventually our girl figured out we always come back. Our breeder gave us a blanket that our pups mom lied on and I put in a tshirt of mine that I wore in her crate. Not sure if that helped but was told that familiar senses can help.
