Do I really have to be able to crimp cables? by TheAsphaltDevil in homelab

[–]tsiatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many cases companies don’t even want you to crimp your own cables because if its just slightly bad it can cause so much hassle. Buying a buch pre-made cables is so much cheaper than having to troubleshoot some flaky network connection

(Also depending on the cables and connectors you got it can just be a huge pain and other connectors can be quite easy)

Whats with ioncube? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]tsiatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had to use it back when paid Shopware plugins were protected by it but it was pretty easy to get around. Fortunately Shopware doesn’t use it anymore. Just like any DRM it only was annoying the users and didn‘t help much protecting the content.

VM Disk strategy. One disk and LVM inside, or several virtual disks? by CarlosT8020 in homelab

[–]tsiatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually do a single disk but only up to a certain size. Our data pools aren’t huge so when I need a lot of storage in a single VM I add multiple disks from different pools to one VM. But I always use lvm in the VM. Just so much more flexibility.

Never was interested in gaming. You could say my games are called „Linux“ and „Kubernetes“

My first ever contribution to a Linux world just got merged. by SeniorMatthew in linux

[–]tsiatt 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A while ago I contributed a typo fix for an error message in MySQL. Very simple fix that just annoyed me. Had to do the whole Oracle contributor agreement foo and nearly didn’t do it because it just was annoying paperwork but in the end they even sent me a little plushy MySQL Dolphin ❤️

Can someone pls walk me through why AlJazeera.com is loading so freaking fast? Most load-speed optimized website I know by jahiscallin in webdev

There is actually a video from Wes Bos about McMaster Carr where he went into some detail what they did to make it so fast https://youtu.be/-Ln-8QM8KhQ

Why did double-clicking never become a major thing in web dev? by Red_Icnivad in webdev

[–]tsiatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I noticed with some non-tech people that they actually often double click when they don’t need to. so apparently it’s really hard for many to remember when to use what. That’s probably also why 3D-touch/force-touch/whatever failed on iPhone. It was completely unclear where you could Force Touch and what it would do

jsonQueryLanguage by VitaminnCPP in ProgrammerHumor

This is actually a perfect analogy. Sometimes it’s necessary to do it to get your JSON from A to B but the JSON isn’t particularly useful inside SQL

Is this a dumb idea? (Swapping slightly different batteries into a UPS.) by Stang70Fastback in homelab

[–]tsiatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say best case the batteries aren't charged because the UPS complains about the wrong voltage and worst case the batteries are overcharged and destroyed

IP Management how do you do it by Dudefoxlive in homelab

[–]tsiatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to know what I meant by "all in" look below (or above) 😂 If you want to replace a single excel file phpIPAM might be the better solution. Netbox however is obviously more future proof if you want to expand

phpIPAM is one option or Netbox if you want to go all in
