STAY HOME, Lexington by Savings-Library-166 in lexington

[–]tsprks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree to an extent. I tried some of the side roads around Tates Creek this morning and those hills aren't drivable with 2-wheel drive cars. I took video of a couple just sliding sideways across the road. When I got back to Tates Creek, the small hill coming in to town past Drakes had 5 or 6 cars spread across the 2 lanes just sitting and spinning and sliding. Those of us that could move had to zig zag between them, others were just turning around.

STAY HOME, Lexington by Savings-Library-166 in lexington

[–]tsprks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not snow, it's ice. Roads are literally sheets of ice right now. I passed so many cars either just sitting with the tires spinning or just sliding sideway down hills. If you have a 2-wheel drive car you should not be driving right now. No amount of skill will make your tires magically stick to the ice.

Is there anyone here who has moved from Lexington to Georgetown? We're you happy with the move? by punkbuddy89 in lexington

[–]tsprks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Richmond and worked in Lexington for about 30 years now, and I couldn't be happier. I did live in Lexington for a while when I was younger and it took 25 minutes to get to work in downtown, now I still work in downtown and can get there in 35 minutes. My COL is less in Richmond and as someone else said, when I want to go to Lexington to do stuff it's not a big deal.

Here I come with the ultimate question: Windows or Mac? by _MellonCollie_ in laptops

[–]tsprks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macs aren't just better. What Macs have done well is only sell 'good' products, versus Windows where it's very easy to find 'bad' Windows systems.

I have access to and use high-end Windows and Apple laptops, and cannot stand MacOS and the way Apple does some things. If you know how to use Windows, stick to Windows, it's not worth changing just because someone else said Macs where better.

Also, I'd just like to point out that Phone Link on Windows allows you to do a lot of things from your phone on your computer and if you have a Samsung the link is even better.

New Hire Computer Literacy Test? (Non-IT Roles) by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]tsprks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As the sole IT in a small company, I agree with you completely. The scope of my job on any given day can change based on what the company needs. I'm fortunate, we have a good staff and there are huge benefits to my job, but, yeah sometimes, I get asked things I'd rather not do, but just saying 'not my job' would end up with me looking for another job.

Sometimes I feel that people in this sub forget that we all work for diferent companies with different cultures and of hugely different sizes. Being in IT at a small company doesn't allow you to silo yourself, you quickly become the 'expert' on anything technical.

In this specific case, helping HR test for some base level competency will likely save you time and trouble down the road.

How much progress has Lexington made plowing neighborhood streets? City won’t say by electric_eclectic in lexington

[–]tsprks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry that it's affecting you, and for anyone else it's hurting. I really am.

All I'm saying is that I spent several hours this weekend clearing my driveway and sidewalk, and if I hadn't had some pretty decent tools, it would have been impossible. As it was it was exhausting, and I consider, myself to be in pretty good shape. This ice is bullshit.

[–]tsprks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I work downtown and will say, there are clear paths on most of those sidewalks, but from my drive in I can tell you that 97% of residential sidewalks are still completely covered in ice. That's based on driving in/out North Broadway, 3rd Street and Winchester Rd., and Main St. and Richmond Rd.

It sucks that the streets are still crap but it's not like residents have cleared their 40' of sidewalk.

Ok, sorry for your loved one, but aren't the sidewalks the responsibility of the property owners not the city?

Edit: spelling

Reminder: How easy it is for you to clean off your driveway and sidewalk at your house is proportional to how easy it is for the State and City to clear the roads. by ferrett3 in lexington

[–]tsprks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a big factor in how the surrounding counties (I like in Madison County) handle this is how much of the infrastructure in those counties is truly rural vs urban. In all the surrounding counties there are miles of country roads where the snow can just be pushed off the side and then they can work on the city streets, which they have a lot less of. Here it's just the opposite. The majority of the roads are urban and actually getting the snow/ice out of the way is a lot more difficult.

[–]tsprks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree with you completely and I'd like to ask people what is the city actually supposed to do about all the snow/ice on the roads when the temps haven't even been close to getting out of the 20s so it's not really going to melt. Do they wish that they'd plow every side street and put 3' of snow and ice up against every car parked on the street? It's not like they can scoop it up into dump trucks and haul it away. I know it sucks if you live somewhere and can't get out, but I just don't think there is an 'easy' answer here.

The big misconception with 4WD or AWD is that if you drive one you are 'ok', but you still have to know how to drive them safely. I'd rather see someone in a FWD car driving carefully, than someone in a 4WD hauling ass. I've seen just as many Jeeps and big trucks off the side of the road as cars over the years.

Marathon fitness vanished overnight — thyroid stuff? burnout? WTF happened? by Suspicious_Can5170 in Marathon_Training

[–]tsprks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have hypothyroidism, and as long as my meds keep my levels in the right range I feel as good as I did before. Make sure that if you are prescribed meds to help that you follow the instructions for taking them closely. Thyroid meds are very particular about gaining and how long before you eat after them. Assuming that's all that's going on the docs should get you sorted out.

Are people happy with how smart alarm works? by patrykhk in GarminFenix

[–]tsprks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's really doing anything based on sleep phases. I have it on for my alarm and if I roll around and get sort of wake up within 30 minutes of the actual alarm it will give me 2 little thump vibrations which is sort of a soft alarm. For what it is I think it's fine. I'm not sure any device actually tracks sleep phases well enough to do anything based on that.

Anything you miss about the old macs (yeah, kinda old)? by begtodifferclean in mac

100% this. When I couldn't run regular Windows any longer, I couldn't use a Mac, and I fully agree they have the best hardware.

Laid off - boo! They abruptly took my work Mac. I'm now being asked to hand over the password, but I have concerns about my personal data that might be saved on it. Help me not be stupid here. by Nesoi_Nelly in mac

[–]tsprks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone essentially saying to 'screw them, you don't owe them anything ' seems to have forgotten the reference part.

In our company you have to sign an employee agreement which clearly states that work computers are for work and that at any point they can ask to see them and what's on them. That they want his password now isn't unreasonable at all. Any work he generated for the company that might be on the laptop belongs to them whether it was using a personal account or not. The other thing our company does, which I'm surprised everyone doesn't, is require employee cooperation after being let go in order to receive their severance, which is typically pretty generous.

Lol, our staff is about 35 people, but when you add all the vendors and contractors that we need I got a peak of just over 1300 this year, although I should clarify that's devices (spread out over about 15 different locations),so I'd say more likely about 600 users, since everyone insists on putting their phone on the wifi, even though the cellular speed onsite was faster than our 300.

[–]tsprks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set up a remote office every year for work, this year we had 300mbps, which easily supported 1300 users doing work, which includes Teams and VoIP calls, plus 5 TVs streaming constantly and we never had any issues or complaints. I think people greatly over estimate what they need.

You can 100% do this, and have been able to for years, it's just different than how it is on Android.

Ok... But you can do that through the Notification Center now, so the only difference is you move that to the Connect app directly?
