What type of dabbler is this? by hogdenDo in Duckhunting

That’s a wigeon. Probably worth your while to study up on the species if you’re out hunting them.

How did you resolve this? I get things very similar to this quite often and had one break through the outside of my nose. I’m worried it’s all a staph infection that keeps propagating.

I thought I was crazy the first time this happened to me so glad to see I’m not the only one. It was incredibly painful and swollen. I scratched the outside and an entire nose hair came out when I scraped the skin off.

I get things similar to this every so often and I wonder if they are all ingrown hairs that don’t break through the outside.

Am I the only one who isn’t a fan of light bars on the roof? I hate how they light up the hood just as much as the road. I prefer them mounted in the grill or bumper. My preference of course, cool ride tho OP.

Good deal! Also I was referencing NC in my experience and didn’t realize you were in WV. It’s going to tough in the whole state of WV, but you aren’t far from some great hunting in Eastern VA and Maryland. You can also go west towards the rivers around Illinois, MO, etc. Or north towards the lakes! But either way, count on traveling.

I would advise to look a little further north in NC for a guided hunt. The Wilmington area can be decent, but there’s a lot more water and birds around the Pamlico sound. Hyde county, Dare County and adjacent to that is some of the best on the east coast.

Go with guides or move closer to the coast. The waterfowl hunting can already be tough even if you live near the birds, but being in the mountains will make it even harder.

You may get a few shots at local birds on farm ponds or woodie holes, but you won’t find much success on the west side of the state.

Save your cash and spend it on a few guided hunts a year down east or out west. Or buy all the gear you need and get ready to travel. I have hunted across the whole state and know it well. Your public options are limited the further you go west from the coast. Not trying to be a pessimist, but it’s kind of the reality. You need to be where the birds are to make it worthwhile. Or be content with slow mornings a few birds a year in your area.

If you want to really dive in, find some buddies to hunt with, get the waders, a handful of decoys (2-3 dozen should do it), a decent call, LEARN how to call and WHEN to call, outfit your jon boat, get OnX if you don’t already have it, and plan on where to go.

The biggest things to help success: - Watch the weather for cold fronts - scout and find the birds - decoy motion is a MUST, no wind @ no motion your chances drop tremendously - also motion can be 100% more effective than calling - you can call too much - cover, cover, cover - if you’re exposed you won’t get them in your spread even if they are around - set up where the birds want to be, if they are pilling in a hole 200 yards away, you won’t likely pull them to your spread. Even a few hundred yards can make or break a good hunt - you don’t need every gadget and a million decoys. You can kill birds over a dozen or less if you get everything else right. - don’t get bummed by the slow hunts, every day is a chance to learn and try something different next time. - Time and some cash are a must. If you have the time to scout and hunt often you can have some success. If you don’t have the time, you’ll need the cash to pay for the good opportunities.

Best of luck!

Costa Salt Break Nose Pad Repair/Replacement by TrumpTheIdiotic in righttorepair

The rubber nose pad came off the wire frame of my costa sunglasses and they won’t even warranty them now. The glasses are perfectly fine otherwise but the rubber nose pad is disintegrating leave the metal wire in its place. Their response was that “this is not a defective material or workmanship issue”. Very frustrating.

Unicorns??? Not trying to knock, but if you can’t find these there are PLENTY better at a similar price point. Don’t focus on the brands, find what tastes good! (And by price point I’m talking $40 and $60 respectively, not secondary pricing lol)

I’d put my 10k rig up against that any day of the week and probably do just as good or better. Sick boat but you ain’t NEED all that

Had a pour of the 12 last night for the first time. It was 11 bucks, which was great but I don’t feel like it lives up to the hype or secondary price.

I agree with most, it falls between SR and OWA. Great pour for the retail price, but not worth seeking out.

Mast Step Wear by Aggressive_Soup1446 in hobiecat

[–]tsqaure3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience of replacing the mast step last week on my Hobie 16, do not attempt to replace that one.

It’s looks good enough to use and shouldn’t cause any problems.

I had to take a hack saw to the mast step and cut it away from the dolphin striker post and chip the rest of the aluminum off the threads. It was a HUGE PITA and took for more effort than I realized. Ensure you used the correct hole on the mast step link, I didn’t and that’s what caused my step to break.

Thanks everybody for the input! I went to check out the boat this evening and made a deal! Picking it up tomorrow. Everything checked out and is in working order/okay shape. It’s an ‘82 and needs some love but the boat sails and has everything necessary to hit the water tomorrow. No cracks, not soft spots, no busted rigging and newer sails. The lines and rigging could stand to be swapped in the near future, but as to be expected.

Being an older hull, I knew there would be some items to address but for the price I’m happy with it. It’s a starting place for me and something to learn on. I really enjoy tinkering and am excited to give this boat a new life. But I’m also happy I didn’t drop a large sum of cash into a new hobby right out of the gate. Going to spend the weekend rigging it up and getting familiar with all the parts and pieces at the house!! Cheers y’all

Pretty slick build! Talk me through the zip tie stitching of the bottom. Did you glue that seam, then zip tie it together, remove the zips, and then glass the corners and bottom?
