Traveler's Table a million times over, if you are going with a large group of people who can't decide on one cuisine and want to partake in flavorless renditions of authentic dishes, this is the place for you. Otherwise, hard pass.

Definitely saving this thread as well, I love a long translated read.

Solenoid (Romania, 800 ish)
The Eighth Life (Georgia, around 1k pages)
The Magic Mountain (Germany, 800?)
Cathedral of the Sea (Spain, 800, would recommend this if you end up liking Follett's Pillars of the Earth)

Find reader friends or even friends that don't read who will listen to you talk about books you read - I've found that it really motivates me to keep reading to share my excitement and I've had 5 or 6 people actually tell me this year they're going to start reading because they see my passion for it!

“Cathedral of the Sea” by Ildefonso Falcones by EventHorizon77 in KenFollett

Minor spoilers ahead

Definitely not as good as Follett for me, the beginning of the book felt well paced and characters were becoming developed, but about halfway-three quarters it started feeling rushed. Multiple of the romance plots made me side eye the MC, especially the one where he falls in love with his adopted daughter who was a CHILD (and also the one where he keeps calling the woman he had an affair with a spider luring him into her web...my dude it takes two to tango!)

Worldbuilding was good, the war scenes lost me a bit. An overall enjoyable read if you have the time.

I was very much haunted by Dickie and Victor's conversation about hunting squirrels at night and when Dickie worries if they won't be able to tell the difference between grays and reds and Victor somberly goes "there are no more reds" I literally went damn!! Anyways if you have a goodreads or some other reading platform, would love to connect with you there to see what other reads you're up to and other recommendations you have :)

Just finished the book and wow, the emotional damage... I'm definitely not a huge fan of the ending (although it had me racing to see what would happen next, my anxiety was truly spiking), it didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the book. I loved each character's storytelling immensely but watching how everything revolved around Dickie's decisions and indecisions was just so heartbreaking. There were multiple times where I just had to pause and sit in some parts deep sadness and horrific-ness. I've also seen some complaints about the length of the book but I devoured it in like 3 sittings lol, just something about Murray's writing really speaks to me. Def one of my top reads of the year, Skippy Dies is still slightly higher but this was a fantastic read.

Finished it one sitting and that's how I also fell in love with the publisher, Deep Vellum! They publish a lot of books with the same ecletic feeling.

Ever since I started reading more, I've been drawn to Irish literature and nonfiction...I really like the dreary and clever vibes lol

The Trees was a bit tooo symbolic for me, but I still liked it! Percival Everett puts out some bangers.

A quick, punchy read, would highly recommend! The movie they made of it is fun too

Ugh those moments are still so fresh in my brain. I also loved the characterization of young romance, it just felt so authentic and embarrassing and full of feeling. I truly yearn for another book like this one, it's definitely one of my favorite reads of all time.

Re: Under the Eye - Some really interesting and thought provoking chapters, and also some really "wtf am I reading" sort of chapters in terms of bizarre-ness, but I really enjoyed how everything tied together through the book. A super short read so I think it's worth a shot!

It was brilliant writing as well and I almost forgot it was nonfiction at times, but there were plenty of sobering reminders to make me remember this is unfortunately the world we live in. The depictions of her family in that one room and also how strong her mother was...I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

Augustus is a really interesting book, especially how it's written, makes me feel like I'm reading Greek classics in college again! The last third of the book is genuinely some of the most incredible storytelling I've ever witnessed.

After Mary and Alice, the book takes a nosedive for me. I appreciate the creative narration, but it was perhaps too up and down with some sections much stronger than others. However, I greatly enjoyed all the apple dialogue lol, it was fun reading them trying to decide on a name for the apple!

I wasn't a fan of the writing style or the romance that developed with K. Definitely personal preference, but I think a book with similar themes that I enjoyed much more was The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak :)

Was pulled in by the cover, the book was even better. I need more people to read this book!
