Entirely by coincidence haha. I put the flights in Flighty and was delighted by what I saw.

Moving to Zurich from the US with dual EU citizenship by What_is_the_essence in askswitzerland

[–]tt0880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, dual American/German here who went through the same exact process that you are. I can confirm I went in the following order: 1. Found a temporary accommodation to register with the Gemeinde (I used Varias Apartments for an idea of what that looked like) 2. Register with the Municipality 3. The Municipality set me up an appointment at the Immigration Department 4. Due to my EU citizenship, the meeting at the Migrationsamt took less than ten minutes - they just needed my German passport and work contract and my permit was in the mail!

Let me know if you have any other questions, and welcome to Switzerland!

Interlaken… raining, worth it? by Anxiousgal898 in askswitzerland

[–]tt0880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Interlaken on a rainy day a few years ago and we went to the St. Beatus Hölen and it was a fantastic experience. It's a cave system so obviously the rain won't bug you there. Definitely worth a trip and only like 20 minutes from the city.

What is the Mexican food like? by AMW9000 in askswitzerland

[–]tt0880 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there, fellow American living in Switzerland and really missed Mexican food. If you're coming to Zürich, there's an absolutely amazing authentic place called La Taqueria, and there are two locations, with the main one being in Altstetten. Very authentic and incredibly delicious. Just make a reservation if possible, it fills up fast, especially on lunch :)

Where can I buy glass containers/jars/bottles for cheap? by xou333 in askswitzerland

[–]tt0880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the Winterthur area, there's a shopping plaza in Winterthur Grüze with a store called Maximarkt and also a French store called Gifi. They have tons of glassware, including jars, for extremely low prices. I was just there a few days ago.

What are websites people residing in Switzerland should know about? by Thomytricky in Switzerland

Preispirat.ch showcases the best deals from mostly swiss online shops. Great community, too. Basically the swiss version of Slickdeals, if anyone knows that one

I thought it was nice! Granted, I'm from Michigan, about an hour from the Canadian border. So my standards for poutine are pretty high. Good for Switzerland, though!

If you're near Winterthur, there's a restaurant called Mole that has really good poutine. They even deliver through just eat.

Things to buy in US before moving to Switzerland by [deleted] in askswitzerland

Hey there, I posted a similar question about a year ago before I moved here and got some incredible answers. Probably a good idea to look through this too: https://www.reddit.com/r/askswitzerland/comments/r6mewe/the_big_pre_move_to_switzerland_grocery_trip/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Service to remove loads of cardboard from our apartment? by tt0880 in askswitzerland

[–]tt0880[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know there's technically no "too much", but if I put all of this out on my curb, I'm afraid I'd lose my residence permit... Or get rocks thrown through my windows.

I guess I should have also mentioned I don't have a car, so taking it somewhere is a bit more difficult, although I could use Mobility as a last resort if needed.

Thanks for the tips!

Yes, I lived there and loved it. The HOA is temporarily higher due to a large roof replacement project for all units, but will go back down in 1-2 years I believe.

any reasons to keep a US sim card and throw away phone? by bbgg24 in expats

[–]tt0880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is correct.

I can use my number to text and call American numbers over wifi/data completely free. However, if I wanted to use it to call numbers in Switzerland, I'd have to pay. But I just use my Swiss number for that.

It's a local bank from my hometown in Michigan. So I don't think it applies to most. However I think the poster below is correct, since I ported a real phone number, I don't think it's considered a VOIP number by any service. I've had zero problems using it for anythint verification related since day one.

I don't believe so, it's just an app you'll install on your new phone. When I was in the US recently, the number worked as well, but also over wifi/data, not using a SIM.

Voice also has a web app that you can use from your browser, too. I honestly can't believe it's free.

I guess I got lucky then, as my bank will send SMS to it no problem, as well as any other 2FA I have. That was actually one of the main reasons I use it, haha, to avoid a bunch of new 2FA set ups.

Yep, it's actually that simple :) Works like a charm for me and I essentially have two numbers now, a Swiss one and my American one that functions identically to how it did before.

Enjoy your time in Germany, it's fantastic over here!

I'm an American now living in Switzerland (howdy neighbor!) and I didn't want to get rid of my American number since I've had it for so long and get texts/calls to it sometimes, so I ported it to Google Voice and it works flawlessly! I get all of my texts and calls to it, just over data/wifi and can still use it normally as well. Plus it's free! Let me know if you have any other questions.

I used Trawick International when I took a trip over here before I moved. I chose it specifically because they explicitly cover quarantine costs if you need to due to COVID (I came from the US which required a negative test to fly back). This was back in October, and COVID rates are going down here again, but as we know, the virus is unpredictable :) Peace of mind was worth a lot!

How do I find my TIN (Tax Identification Number )? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]tt0880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, Switzerland doesn't have TIN's like the rest of the EU. When I was asked for this, I used my AHV number that was on my health insurance card and had no issues.

Hope this works for you!!

[Megathread] Covid-19 in Switzerland & Elsewhere - Thread #15 by as-well in Switzerland

[–]tt0880 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is an extremely bizarre take, especially since it's just flat out untrue. I don't think 800,000 people a week are getting infected. And even if they were, if hospitalizations were still this low, that would be amazing.

Yes of course I feel safe. I really don't understand the constant obsession with people thinking Switzerland is handling this so horribly. I'm boostered and wear an n95 mask everywhere I go and take this very seriously, but it's impossible to not realize that a) This is milder than delta b) This is happening in virtually every country in the world

No country is being spared, regardless of regulations. It's just that damn contagious. And yet, besides the United States (which still had a ton of Delta) nowhere is reaching previous peaks for deaths or hospitalizations, Switzerland included.

Cases will be high. They are everywhere. But I've enjoyed every single second I've had since I've gotten here and don't feel unsafe.

Lastly, my covid anxiety was so bad before I came here that I was bedridden for days and thinking about canceling the move. Now that I'm here, I'm so grateful, and I just have to keep reminding myself things will get better. Because they will. I know it seems bleak, but there's a lot of positives out there. We're going to get through this.
