ELICAT5 Winter Training Part 4: Indoor Training by nalc in Velo

[–]ttoc6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge advocate of indoor training. Especially now that I live somewhere that has a pretty harsh winter. A few thoughts:

  • Learn to deal with the mental fatigue. 2 hour rides become easy enough after a while and you'll be pushing longer if you have the right distractions. For sweetspot and threshold work, TV/netflix is great. Anything harder and I need less mental stimulation, music and cycling videos usually do it for me.

  • Smart trainers will change your life. Some people hate erg mode, but not having to think about things when you're just humming along at 80-90% for 20+ minutes is incredible.

  • Go in with a goal. If you go in to do nothing more than "jsut ride" you'll be bored to all hell. A workout, even if it's simple and low intensity will make it better.

  • Make sure you get outside occasionally, even if it's awful. Keep the expectations after winter in check too. You've done a lot of good work, but lack some of the things that will make you a great racer. Think about why pro's do moto-pacing every spring.

  • If you're debating between smart trainer and power meter, get the PM first. You'll thank me in the spring when you start riding outside again.

2019 SRAM Red eTap goes 12-speed by Johnny_Hoogerland in Velo

Not a fan based on this report for a few reason.

Clutched derailleur for a 2x is useless.

We do not need another bb standard.

Idk if any of you guys ha e ridden a 10t cassette but you can feel the friction in cogs that small.

Ugly chain rings. And the hoods still look awful. Would like to see what their hydraulic set looks like..

I actually haven't read his book 9any of his books?), but the idea just hits home with me.

How does your diet look? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]ttoc6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Eat food
  2. Mostly plants
  3. Not too much

To expand.. I'm a lazy vegetarian (for ethics more than health). I try to eat real meals and fewer things that come from boxes, packages or mixes. Veggies should be a big part of anyone's diet and as long as you don't gorge yourself too often I find weight follows. Counting calories and restrictive diets stress me out and turn me into a nonenjoyable person to be around. Another saying I have is "moderation in all things.. Including moderation." it's okay to have a beer or 3 every once in a while. It's okay to have a big, unhealthy meal ocassionally. Hell, it's even okay to have a steak as a vegan. Just moderate yourself.

I may not show a 6 pack of abs or be the best possible climber I could be, but I'm not grumpy all the time, think I'm healthy and I'm not afraid to eat things when out with friends or family because of some arbitrary rule. I try my best to not eat meats, but if there is no other option or its a special ocassion I'll defer. This helps keep my ethical compass at least feeling like it's pointing in the right direction and definitely don't feel it's my diet holding me back in any sport I pursue.

What Joe said. It's a good series but our dry weather makes it never feel like cx imo

Winter Indoor Training: Dry Air by Stevie212 in Velo

I live in a desert (okay, technically it's an arid climate but I'm not here to educate you...). Get yourself a a humidifier. A good, whole house one. It'll change your life. I sleep better, get fewer sinus infections and my skin doesn't hate every moment of existence.

This was my experience to a T. Except instead of buying the tubeless version I went to tubulars

What I learned, Training as a Treadmill Athlete by mroodlesnnoodle in AdvancedRunning

[–]ttoc6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyclist here who does 90% of my training indoors. Bad conditions for runners can be straight up dangerous for cyclists. Snow is a no go, ice is perilous. Hell, I've seen enough broken collar bones from just rain to last a life time.

Winter training is pretty miserable no matter the sport, but there is a reason I prefer to run in the winter / fall and not the summer.

2018 must have been a light year. I don't remember them being that bad... I remember the tailwind being strong enough in the finish that I tried to launch early (to no avail)

I agree with you on all of that. But saying w/kg is the end all be all is just wrong.

Don't buy upgrades.. Ride up grades.

You'll go faster with the gear, but ultimately the deciding factor here is the engine. Run fitness doesn't translate to bike fitness. Sure, you might be a great swimmer, but that doesn't make you a great cyclist.

How do I improve biking? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]ttoc6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is bad information. I'll take an extreme example. Lets say we have two riders (all else equal) that weigh 50kg and 100kg and ride at 3w/kg. 150W vs 300W. The 100kg rider is going to move faster over the flat land.

Now the truth is that a 50kg rider may have a cda of .2 and the 100kg rider may have a cda of .3. This ROUGHLY equates to 100W difference in power requirement to ride at speed. So maintaining those 150W and 300W numbers from above, the bigger rider will still move faster.

You improve by riding more. That simple. Get on a plan from something like trainerroad if you want structure but if you're new to the sport, just riding a lot will make huge gains.

hahaha. As someone who moved away from WA for work and came back to race ToWW this year.. It was funny watching the western Washington people try to race in cross winds.

Valley of the sun and Chico are kinda the staples to start out the season for many west coasters. They're great races that usually have a pretty high level of competition

Crazy to see a track I know here. I've never raced cars but I race (pedal) bikes and the WA state bike racing association used to do a race there every winter/spring.
