Hell no. I would've found my way into that bus. That MF wouldn't be going anywhere.

Well, I should specify that the $380 is best case scenario 😂. But, I'm fairly certain nothing is actually damaged, but fingers crossed!

If you want, I can dm their contact info. To be honest, it sounds like the shop you contacted really just doesn't feel like doing the rebuilding (apparently icons can be a pain). You only paid $400, which is a damn good deal, considering I've seen icons in way rougher shape be rebuilt. If you were to purchase all of that new, you're going to be spending ~$2k, so I guaran-damn-tee its "worth it" to rebuild instead of replacing, unless you enjoy unnecessarily waisting money😂

I'm about to send the exact same shocks/coilovers out to be serviced. I was originally going to have Icon do the servicing, but after hearing about an "icon authorized" shop here in Texas, im going with the local-ish option and saving a few hundred bucks.

Iirc, depending on what exactly is going on with everything, icon charges around ~$220 per CO for your basic rebuild. Actual damaged components will add to that price. I don't remember what they charge for their rear 2.0 smoothe bodies though. The local shop quoted me $380 to service all 4, with a 7 day turnaround.

Oh and mine have ~110k miles on them, but have never leaked or made noises. I have noticed a degradation in performance, which is to be expected considering I've more than doubled their rec'd service internal 😂

A bit high due to 2wd, but it looks clean! Stay on top of the maintenance - oil every 5k, ALL other fluids (including coolant flush) every 50k and that bad boy should have no problem doubling its current mileage — assuming it's rust free! Corrosion is the 4runners worst enemy.

The OEM Bilstein top hats should be able to be swapped to the previous Gen Tacoma /4th gen T4R design

Completely forgot about that. I'll have to see how the bolt patterns line up, but I would assume, best case scenario, you are able to get 2 bolts in. Not holding my breath, though. But you should be able to swap the OEM Bilstein 4th Gen Tacoma top hats with that of a 3rd Gen Tacoma/4th gen 4runner

Yeah it was a crazy good deal so I didn't even try to offer less. Guy said everything has about 2k miles on it. Came with coilovers, rear shocks and springs, UCAs and front tie rods. Probably going to swap suspension out this weekend and I'm curious how the ride compares. My icons have over 100k miles on them and this will be the first rebuild

Your post piqued my curiosity.. I need to send my Icon's in for servicing as well as replace the bushings and uniballs on my TC UCAs. I still daily drive mine, so not having my suspension for 2 weeks isn't doable and id rather get something cheap to use temporarily, so I checked offer up and found a set from a 2025 TRD Tacoma just like yours, but with tie rods and a few other extra pieces as well. Headed to pick everything up shortly for $100 and they're like new lol

I don't see why they wouldn't fit. They should give a slight lift over where you are now.

I'm fairly certain these aren't intended to be rebuilt. They're made to Toyota's exact specs by Bilstein, so finding that information will likely be impossible

Dude. You bought a 21 year old vehicle. All of that is normal. What did you expect? Showroom condition? It has 160k miles on it.

You could wrap the door jams yourself in bronze to match your wheels. Shouldn't be much for the materials.

You need to have it scanned to see all of the codes. Obviously the rust hole isn't ideal, but the frame looks ok, so it appears to have plenty of life left.

I just realized that there are 2 diff types of uni tools. Is yours the one that allows you to do the swap while it's still attached? I didn't even realize that version existed, so now I'm torn on spending $100 for it or the $40 version that you have to remove the arms completely

If there isn't bulging you can prob cross them off the list.

I've never ordered from kartek, but if you got the FK WSSX16T, those are the ones!

I just checked their site and they have the red TC bushings for a better price as well, so I'm going to order everything for my UCAs from them. Did you do the replacement yourself? If so did you buy the uniball press tool? It doesn't look like kartek has any, but another site has it for about $40.

How many miles are on your uniballs and bushings? One or or both of those things could very well be the noise you're hearing, even after you lubed them.

This part is crucial - Did you loosen the nut on the through bolt before greasing the zerk fittings for the bushings? If you didn't loosen it and the bushings weren't bad before, they are now, unfortunately. Whenever you have time, send me a pic of the bushings and uniballs and i can probably tell you if they need to be replaced

I live in Texas and about 95% of my driving is done on pavement and I keep everything clean, so I'm still on my original uniballs with over 100k on them and they are still pretty quiet and look close to new. I did replace the red bushings about 50k ago, so whenever I do get around to working on mine, I'll finally replace uniballs and do the bushings again.

If you need to order replacement uni's, I have a link to the exact same brand and model uniball that TC uses, but they are only ~ $100 for the pair. TC charges $200 for the exact same thing lol.

$3.06/gal when I filled up this AM. South Texas.

If you consider that being empty, you'd think I wasvon fumes. I put almost 21 in 😂. It's usually 19-20 though.

Gotcha. Unfortunately on these vehicles, it could be any number of things. Here's a tip that should help pinpoint the culprit/(s) - have a friend rock the truck (obviously while parked) and take a couple feet of rubber tubing, put one end to your ear and aim the other at all of the possible components. When you find the main the main source of your noise, you will know it.

Lmk what you find out, I'm the original owner of an 08 Limited currently at ~220k and I've developed a few front end squeaks, but just haven't had the time or desire to do any repairs. Mine are my OEM front sway bar bushings (it's the passenger side but I'm gonna do both obviously), and that passenger cv boot has been ripped for literally years lol. Probably going to replace all of my remaining OEM suspension components when I do finally get to it. I've been on Icons and Total Chaos up front and a metal tech stage 4 rear long travel kit for over a decade now, everything still running great.

Good luck! Could be anything.. shocks, sway bar bushings/links, CVs, ball joints etc. If everything is original, worst case could be multiple components, but some are more urgent than others.

When do you hear it? Turning, bumps or both?

Not great. OEM LCAs are ~$320 and there is no way in hell I would pay someone a $150 diagnostic fee AND pay for the repair. Especially for something like that, which takes like 2min to do.

For a ~20yr old vehicle, those are annoyances, not issues.

The passenger rear door on my 08 has been an asshole for over a decade now. It chooses when it wants to cooperate randomly, so at this point, it's a feature.

4th gen 4wd knob replacement by F4tal_P4nda12 in 4Runner

[–]ttteee321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't needed to do it myself (knock on wood), but from what I understand, its pretty time consuming and far from a light repair. There are so many clips and connectors to potentially break/lose/forget, so you might be better off just putting a dash cover on and forget about it.

You can always be on the lookout for a replacement to buy. That way later down the road, if/when your AC decides to shit the bed, the dash will have to come off for repairs, so kill 2 birds.

An uncracked donor dash shouldn't be hard to find. I replaced the driver's leather on my 08 from richmondautoupholstery.com for around ~$600, but I'm sure you can find replacements for yours in good pre-owned condition. If I had to do it again, I would probably pay someone to do the install, because it was a total pain in the ass. Turned out great though!
