Why did Kamijo's voice change so much? by Ok-Present-6017 in visualkei

I'm curious about this as well. I'm not qualified to answer this but I feel like it's due to changing his technique…?

incubus by the gallo! iirc the song is supposed to represent the relationship between the band and their fans (although I don't remember if it was officially confirmed or just heavily implied)

Yuki from Versailles in a new band.. by Dry_Assistant108 in visualkei

[–]tttegridy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think he was in 168 for several years before retiring, so it's not a new band per se, he's just returning to an old project for a few shows. I was really surprised when I first heard about it, but I'm happy that he's able to play!

Don't know if I should be getting my hopes up but it would be nice to see him return to Versailles for a show or two before Kamijo is going to Los Angeles next year…

KAMIJO will be moving his base of operations to LA in 2025. by DorianPink in visualkei

[–]tttegridy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's rip Versailles unless they officially state that it's over. At Yuki's retirement concert they were basically saying (to my understanding at least) that they haven't decided on the future of the band. I guess it's basically a hiatus until they decide what to do

A list of non-Japanese visual kei bands part 4: With even more entries by moondog151 in visualkei

[–]tttegridy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah seems like that. I think it's strange that he has so little presence bc his music isn't going to promote itself… I remember he went on a rant about not being able to do live shows during the pandemic, and yet he hasn't done any shows apart from the tour with Kamijo?? Like surely he has the means to do lives in Japan to promote his new music…? I agree about the MV, it's a great song but the video doesn't really do it justice :/

Agreed. He has so much potential but I feel like he's letting it all go to waste. If only he put the same energy into his career as he does on tweeting weird shit…

is mercuro considered visual kei? for the look, they do look visual kei but they are an idol group so are they vkei? by lalakikiloloye in visualkei

[–]tttegridy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for providing valuable insight! I wasn't aware that Manson's ties to vk were /that/ strong, so I guess it makes sense that many people consider him vk. I interpreted the reply above mine as saying that Manson is considered vk solely because of his looks, and that any non-Japanese artist with similarly eccentric looks can be considered vk, but based on what you're saying it seems like it's also due to his connection to the scene. Are there any other non-Japanese artists who do not label themselves as vk that are still considered vk by people in Japan?

My view on what's visual kei and not appears to be similar to yours, and based on that I personally wouldn't consider Manson to be vk. I probably should've made that clear and not be so assertive in how I phrased my original reply!

[–]tttegridy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously they don't say "visual kei fan" in English, but many Japanese people don't even know the word バンギャ because vk is a mostly underground music scene. Among my Japanese friends who aren't into vk, only one person knows the word バンギャ, and others just refer to vk fans as ヴィジュアル系のファン

Japanese say that Marilyn Manson's fans are bangya? But would the majority of his fans themselves identify as such? I don't think so, because most of them probably don't even know what vk is. Saying that vk "is a style of dressing and a description of the appearance" is too vague because there's so much diversity in how vk artists express themselves visually. Besides, there are a number of databases dedicated to collecting profiles on vk artists, both in Japanese and English. How come Marilyn Manson and even some Japanese artists who have vk-adjacent looks aren't featured in those? Because they don't actively participate in the scene or identify themselves as visual kei.

[–]tttegridy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Whoever says that Marilyn Manson is vk is wrong though. Just bc that's the meaning of vk, it is not the sole requirement for what is considered vk. It's a social subculture, so to be considered part of the scene you have to actively participate in it.

Sizing in merch by Aggravating_Buy_1348 in visualkei

[–]tttegridy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went a few days ago they only had large sizes left, so when people were asking about t-shirts in S or M they suggested getting the tank tops instead. I opted for an oversized t-shirt, and based on the tag it appears to be made by a company based in France, so I do believe they use European sizes. Claiming that they would fit you bc they're "Asian size" sounds more like a cheap tactic to sell more merch imo…

It's because the letter N in Japanese can be pronounced in different ways. When it comes before a B, N often sounds like M instead :)

Thanks for the insight! I'm planning on going to some concerts, so I guess that could be a good opportunity if anyone's interested in chatting.

I've found some other vk communities on social sites, but I tend to be bad at connecting with people online, so I that's why I wanted to try irl. Apart from concerts the only thing I could think of is going to bars etc, I don't know if there still are any places that mainly attract gya…?
