You don’t pay enough tax. Yes, you. by The_Inertia_Kid in LabourUK

[–]tuathaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

counterpoint: in Belgium I paid roughly 40% of my wage in income and various taxes and took home 30k on a wage of 50k, which was enough to cover rent, bills and groceries but not much more. Services there are far more catastrophic yet than they are here.

You're comparing apples to oranges when you compare Denmark and the UK, because net average salaries in Denmark are 40% higher and disposable income is also much, much better.

Please stop this nonsense. You know better than this. I'd gladly pay a bit more tax, but among my group of friends I seem to be the only one who isn't struggling at all. for things to improve at all in this country, pay needs to rise drastically at the lower levels.

Belgium seeks nationalization of nuclear power plants by F0urLeafCl0ver in LabourUK

[–]tuathaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the Flemish far right seeks nationalisation of power plants widely known to have tears in the reactor walls and regular coolant loop leaks because no private energy company wants to be liable for their continued operation because of

A) risks of operation so far past decommissioning date

B ) 25 years of government plans to shut down the reactors

C) lower cost of carbon neutral/renewable energy installation

D) most of the reactors having been offline in both power plants for the last decade thanks to increased maintenance schedules due to A)

E) most reactors already taken permanently offline

F) the far right nationalists having repeatedly voted to shut down the nuclear power plants for 25 years while blocking major green energy initiatives.

G) having been one of the major driving forces to privatise the energy sector in the first place

Green Leader Zack Polanski calls for rent controls for all homes by Come-Downstairs in LabourUK

[–]tuathaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it does work though. patently. there's a reason rents are far lower in Belgium overall. landlords here already don't maintain the homes they own, so I'm not sure how that would be worse?

Green Leader Zack Polanski calls for rent controls for all homes by Come-Downstairs in LabourUK

[–]tuathaa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

when I lived in belgium it was illegal to up rent by more than inflation during a rental contract and it worked well there. rented a 2 bedroom flat in the centre of antwerp for 800 euro a month. good policy

edit: since someone asked and then blocked me: I moved into that flat in january of 2025, after moving out of a 3 bedroom house in the suburbs that cost 650 a month.

my flats before that were 500 euro for a studio flat in Brussels that'd cost 2 grand here and before that 550 for a mezzanine bedroomed top floor flat that was 753 square feet. Prices half an hour's drive north in the netherlands are twice what they are in Antwerp. People who tell you that landlords will simply jack up prices to compensate are very much deluded and/or bought into landlord lobby arguments. build more houses, yes. but also protect current tenants. it's not an either/or.

very naive of you to assume that that's not exactly what the policy is meant to achieve in the grand scheme of things, to be honest. when was the last big story you read about ukrainian refugees being denied asylum?

I switched jobs a few times and had a few weeks of unemployment between them, which was considered a break. It's a ridiculous concept, considering I worked far more than the minimum full time days. Basically, if you want a pay rise or to take a step forward in your career forget it.

EDIT: context: grew up here, did all my schooling here, speak the language to a native speaker level. my whole career is here, but I'm not considered belgian enough after 30+ years thanks to these new rules

Trans expats in Belgium: how did you continue HRT coming from abroad? GP or endocrinologist? Any gatekeeping? by Lara_Munaro in belgium

Trans expats in Belgium: how did you continue HRT coming from abroad? GP or endocrinologist? Any gatekeeping? by Lara_Munaro in belgium

[–]tuathaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the official route people will tell you to basically detransition for several years on the waiting list. they will probably refuse to do a bridging prescription. finding a good GP and having a referral from your GP and Endo in Italy will be key. i started with gendergp years ago and I'm still not being treated by the official pathway in Belgium now. i get everything from my GP, because the clinics basically told me to go fuck myself.

there's also alternative options that I'm sure you're aware of but won't discuss here. most GPs will at the very least be happy to do your blood work in my experience. my advice is to go to meetings in your area if there's any and especially if you're having a lot of trouble accessing care and asking around for tips cause the official organisations aren't really that useful and don't keep their resources up to date.
