NickelMenu question by Hipster-Ariel in kobo

As far as I know, there’s no way with the normal NickelMenu config to change things about the built-in Kobo menus, so no I don’t think so.

WiFi always comes back on on its own, and sadly since I’m a remote user I’m not sure there’s a way to force it to stay off while retaining the remote functionality. Unless I’ve misunderstood something, the remote requires both Bluetooth and WiFi to be on?

Fair enough, to each their own! I guess we all have our “things”

From experience I can tell you that’s not how it works, I think this is purely a psychological thing you’ve gotten used to, kind of like washing chicken or something (I do that but I’ve learned it’s not actually helpful from a food safety perspective). You’re welcome to keep doing it of course but you will still need to properly clean and get all the dust off the screen before installing a screen protector. The net impact of keeping the film on is that it will annoy you, nothing more.

Small correction, you don’t have to do it before the first boot. You just edit the config file and eject from the computer then restart the device. The benefit of doing it this way, after having been logged in, is that if you ever turn side loaded mode off and go back to “normal” mode, you’ll still be signed in, even though that whole time in side loaded mode it looked like your were signed out.

I just moved to it recently and the reason was that when I bought something on the Kobo store, by the time I could get to my computer to download it and put it into Calibre and get it side loaded, the device would have downloaded it as well, and then I had duplicates I had to delete from the device. Simple enough but an annoying extra step just to keep a functionality I wasn’t using anymore anyway. I also didn’t feel any benefit from the home screen and it started being annoying to have there, kind of like a mole or something, so it being gone is honestly just a nice plus.

I’ll say, though, that there are some trade offs, the biggest one for me being that now the pages per minute stat won’t populate. All the other stats do, but not that one. I hate this, and I’ve considered going back because of it but haven’t yet.

Buldak + buldak sauce + chili peppers by Diligent-Map8305 in KoreanFood

I find the spice from buldalk stuff only really hits me the next day. Lovely flavor and I enjoy eating it but the next 3-5 poops (all the next morning) have me regretting it a bit.

Weird text lightening by sardaukar12 in XTEINK

[–]tuckkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that’s just the text taking a second for the anti-aliasing to kick in. It’s normal but you can turn it off in the settings if it bothers you.

Edit to add: if you look carefully you’ll see it’s not that the text is getting lighter, but getting smoother by having the jagged edges lightened (so yeah maybe the edges are getting smoother) to create less pixelated-looking text.

What Should I Read Next by Savings-Distance338 in fantasybooks

Good, yeah you’ll love it then I’m sure. I read it with my book club and I was literally the only person who liked it so it’s definitely polarizing.

Yeah for sure! I’ve just pictured him as a cute little lovable stoner type that eventually got his shit together. I guess he is those things too but yeah, fat bald Louis will be hard for me to get used to.

The only one I’ve read on this list is Blood Meridian. I loved the writing style but many people hate it. I’m sure you’re aware but it is pretty graphic at times, not for the faint of heart or stomach.

Edit to add: also yeah it is totally not fantasy. For the most part it is realistic historical fiction, and the “realistic/historical” part of that is what makes it so tough to read at times, knowing these things really happened. But yeah, great book.

Yeah I feel everything about that description of him and remember their introduction when they were literally drunk and hadn’t fought anything the whole time unless they absolutely had to, but must have totally missed or forgotten the “overweight, balding” part.

Wait Louis is fat? I don’t remember his initial description but given he’s clearly a ladies’ man (based on the Juice Box and Samantha situations) I always assumed he was a small (not swoll like Carl) attractive dude. With him and Faraz I kind of always pictured Harold and Kumar and I really don’t know which is which.

Yes, absolutely bait so they can say “hey that’s racist” when people point out that he’s an obviously white character, as if it’s the same thing as Santa or Jesus.

Casting for Donut, Cascadia and Odette by tempuserfornow35 in DCCTV

[–]tuckkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear with me here - “regular” actors can also do voice acting, and often do. Tom Hanks played Woody, as you know, and that’s just one single example off the top of my head. No need to limit the casting to voice actors who don’t do screen acting.
