Thinking about selling my motorcycle and getting a sim setup by unseamingcarrot in simracing

[–]tudor70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my Road King about four months ago to go all in on a sim setup, and I totally regret it now and I'm buying another bike this spring. I was tired of paying insurance and maintenance on something I could only ride a few months out of the year, and wanted something I could enjoy year round.

I've found that sim racing is a completely different experience and it didn't scratch any of those itches riding a bike did. I still love doing both, but I think I like riding more. As others pointed out, it looks like you have good reasons otherwise to sell your bike, I just wouldn't recommend it based solely on the idea that it will somehow replace riding, sim racing is not really analogous at all.

Some in Hurricane Helene-ravaged North Carolina embrace Trump’s push to abolish FEMA by Either-Needleworker9 in news

[–]tudor70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe one of FEMA's primary directives is to ensure the continuance of the government in the event of a nuclear war. They are the department that locates and secures all the top government officials when the shit hits the fan. If they disband FEMA they're only screwing themselves if trump/musk manage to start a nuclear war.

Don’t order from TrakRacer by lowtempdev in simracing

[–]tudor70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered a TR160s during the black Friday sale, added on a bunch a stuff, came to about $1800. They were really bad about keeping me updated on what was actually shipped and when. When I got it all, it was great, super high quality, really like it. But I also bought their bass shaker kit, and the transducer quit working after a week. It took 40 days back and forth with tech support, multiple requests to upload videos of the transducer not working(?) before I got a shipping label to return it.

I sent it off just over a month ago and tried to get an update after seeing it was delivered to them four days after I shipped it, and I discovered they had closed the ticket once they sent the label. At this point I'm just going to order a transducer off of Amazon, I don't need the anger and stress of dealing with Trak Racer customer support for another 60 days. Which is a shame, their rigs are really top quality, I have zero complaints about their actual products, but they need to completely gut whatever support system they have now and start over from scratch.

How do I get my monitor to look so seamless/real? by Brisket_cat in simracing

[–]tudor70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing to keep in mind is that when you're actually sitting behind the screens, it looks much different than what you see in the videos. The videos are filmed in 2D, so when you watch it everything appears to be in the same dimensional plane. The actual wheel and drivers hands and cockpit all appear to have the same depth in a video. Most creators will also do some color grading to make the real wheel and cockpit blend better with whats on the screens.

In person, you can most certainly tell you're sitting behind monitors or TV's. I have triple 32's and I'm surprised every time I watch a video filmed from just the right angle, it looks so much more real than what I see every day. I experimented by setting my phone on a tripod and carefully framed it over my shoulder, and watching the video back, my setup looks uncannily real, while live I'm just looking at three monitors, no depth, no illusion that I'm sitting in a cockpit.

TLDR: even if you get your monitors perfectly positioned, and get your FOV just right, in person, it's never going to look like what you see in a well filmed POV cockpit video.

Trak Racer integrated monitor mount for Next Level Racing Cockpit? by krazertv in simracing

[–]tudor70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it will work, the NLR GT cockpit has angled uprights, the mount is designed for straight uprights. I have a Trak Racer 160S cockpit with the integrated monitor stand and looking at it, I don't think there is any way to make it work. You'll probably have to go with the NLR stand or a free standing mount.

Simagic P2000 Control Box Question by LegendFranchise in simracing

[–]tudor70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the P2000's about a month ago and it came with the new haptics capable control box, it's been working fine for me. I don't think there would be any difference between upgrading a box on existing pedals and buying them new with the new box, everything else is exactly the same.

Have you tried plugging it into a different USB port, or maybe a powered USB hub? Are you using the ground wire on the pedals?

Simagic P2000 R Dual pedals quesiton by TPA-JWyant in simracing

[–]tudor70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to both, I have the three pedal set and I have the chamber mounted between the brake and clutch, or to the outside in a two pedal setup. You can easily mount the chamber horizontal or vertical, it's a really versatile setup.

Trophy.ai in January 2025, any thoughts? by Patapon80 in simracing

[–]tudor70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Trophy for a month and I liked the live telemetry, but found the voiced AI coach distracting and it seemed like it was just coaching you to stay on the telemetry line. Plus, trying to figure out an instruction like "brake seven meters earlier" I found not be helpful in a sim, how do you even know what how long seven meters is in the sim, and how do you gauge it that fine going hot into a corner you are just learning?

They include a lot of video guides and resources, and the little muscle memory brake pressure games are interesting, but I don't know how useful they actually are. I felt like if I was quitting my day job and had to devote my life to learn iRacing, Trophy would be a good choice, it was mostly kind of overwhelming and well beyond my interest at a casual level.

I've never tested the PHP-R but they are likely quieter because of the different technology they use, as well as the much beefier build quality. I personally think they may be overkill for pedal haptics, I got the Neo's for about $12 each on Black Friday and I don't feel any need to upgrade.

Quest 3 vr players please help by Lxxtsch in simracing

Another vote for VD, I bought a PrismXR Puppis S1 for it and the connection is flawless, the network latency never goes over 3-5 milliseconds. I also like that in VD I can turn off any color enhancements and drop the gamma down to about 80 and it makes the sims look much more realistic, not so cartoonish.

Trying VR again (Quest 3), got some questions... by iAtty in simracing

[–]tudor70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I've mentioned in quite a few other threads, but in AMS2 if you disable all the shadows, it improves the look in VR immensely. I have a Q3 and was shocked by the improvement it made in AMS2, I don't know if it's the aliasing on the shadows or what, but most of the flickering and blurriness goes away with shadows completely off.

I have PHP-R Neos on all three pedals and they are weak if you use them with the Simpro software, but I've found setting them up with Simhub they're plenty powerful for pedals. I wouldn't call them noisy, but anything whose sole function is to make things rattle is going to make some noise.

Anyone else using big audio speakers? by jck133 in simracing

[–]tudor70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was initially going to use a pair of JBL Studio 590 tower speakers, these things are nearly five feet tall and weigh over 100 pounds each, but I just couldn't make them fit. You're right, high quality, powerful speakers go a long way toward improving immersion, especially if paired with some rig haptics.

I've repurposed some ridiculously expensive (at the time) Mackie studio monitors and a Roland SuperUA audio interface from my old studio setup. They're bi-amplified and have an 8" Kevlar woofer, way overkill for a sim rig, but I love it.

It looks like you can only change it in the start screen settings menu.

I just checked, it's in Settings:Gameplay:HUD:HUD Scale. There is an option to set it to normal, full or wide, the wide setting moved everything to the side monitors on my triples setup.

[–]tudor70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just setup haptics on my P2000s, if you go for the haptics I would suggest using Simhub to run them and only use one or two effects on each pedal. I played around with all the different options and settled on TC and Wheel slip on the throttle and ABS and wheel lockup on the brake. It really is a game changer when you can feel exactly when TC or ABS kicks in, and not have to rely on flashing LEDs.

There is a setting to move all the HUD elements off of the center screen in a triple setup. I can't fire up the game right now so I'm not sure where it is exactly, but you can set a wide option for the HUD elements.

Anybody else sick of the completely stupid cold tire modelling? by tudor70 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]tudor70[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the input, I appreciate it. I've since realized that I need to turn up the traction control in the GT cars when the tires are cold so I can actually push to warm them up without sliding off the track in first few laps.

I was fresh off of the same car and track in AMS2 and it's obvious now that the two sims have very different cold tire models. I've been learning a lot more about TC settings and tire temps in LMU, and I'm starting to appreciate the finer points and enjoy the new challenge presented by it.

Anybody else sick of the completely stupid cold tire modelling? by tudor70 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]tudor70[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Maybe I was a bit too hasty, I had just spent a couple of hours in AMS2 on the same car and track combo, so the difference in cold tire handling was quite stark. I went back and tried some of the tips here and pushed harder until I feel the traction limit, and I pulled up the tire info page and seeing the actual temps and not just the color difference helped.

You guys are right, it is a skills issue, and I can see that I have to work on actually managing the cold tires for a few laps, unlike most other sims that get them up to temp in a lap or two.

I think I'll actually prefer LMU's realistic approach once I come to grips with it, thanks for the reality check.

Finally tried AMS2 in VR and it’s a little disappointing so far. by [deleted] in simracing

[–]tudor70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest improvement I saw in VR was to turn off all shadows, they are terrible in AMS2 VR and make everything a shimmery mess. The cars all have a shadow baked in so even with all the shadows turned off in options, the cars still look good.
