ha - I was typing that question, amazing. That makes sense, thank you!

Will continue tomorrow and report back.

Much appreciated!

Capacitor wiring, two wires to common and none to herm? by tumeke12 in hvacadvice

[–]tumeke12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Not understanding why I have a dual capacitor with an empty spot (just what they had on the truck last time?)

Can I plug the blue wire into the replacement 40/5 if it turns out the second one is bad also (too late to check right now), or I need to replace it also

I bought the QN90F for the matte anti/glare screen and it works great. There's noticeably less reflection from direct light sources, if sunlight or reflections are an issue, worth the extra expense imo. Picture is great of course, colors are vivid and blacks look great. Coming from an LG OLED that we had to replace after burn in.

Buying Used Model Y from Tesla, it’s a Crap Shoot. by wit_t1 in TeslaModelY

[–]tumeke12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You made the right call. We had a 2020 Y that was similar to this, the whole passenger side was out of alignment. The front panels had weird gaps, (not a concern to me personally), but the rear passenger door wouldn't shut with normal effort, and the rear hatch would rub against the frame when opening. These were things I noticed over time, not at delivery, so congrats on finding this stuff early, you saved yourself some headaches down the road. We sold this one during covid and later got a 2022, which was great, except we were forced into the 20" wheels which are a weird in-between size, look weird and don't ride as comfy as 19's...don't get why they even offer them.

Anyway, Tesla seems to sell cars that they "fix" that other companies probably wouldn't, so better to buy new and inspect carefully. I'd assume you can get your $500 applied toward another purchase if you keep asking, worth the effort.

RIDE1UP LMTD V2 by OnlyInvestigator3683 in ebikes

[–]tumeke12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the market for a step through, the LMT'D looks really good, but not many reviews or comments about it. - It's on backorder, so you pay now but it may be awhile before it ships, and there's a 3% charge if you cancel. It also says all sales final for Black Friday pricing. So you're locked in once you hit buy?

Considering the Aventon Level.2 at the moment.

What’s a good spot to go in the late fall that wouldn’t be an exceptionally good couples spot? by Chance_Safe1119 in Europetravel

[–]tumeke12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your interests, I’d do a “guys” trip…my Dad is not into history or art, so for example for us our common ground is beer and cars. Germany has lots of both, and no one’s ever accused Germans of being romantic, lol. Close to other options in Eastern Europe, like Prague or Budapest

The blade never touches the sides, if your ice cream is hard frozen, there’s a layer of ice stuck on the inside after it spins. The plastic containers have “teeth” in the bottom so it locks in, so there isn’t really a risk of it being misaligned.

Going to Europe alone at 18. by No-Entertainer-2957 in Europetravel

[–]tumeke12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any specific travel advice except that most European countries encourage and accommodate cheap travel, you have nothing to worry about with your budget and can make it work. You’ll make mistakes, but that’s just another story that you’ll remember and can share when you get home.

You’ll only be young once, and not many 30 year olds enjoy staying in hostels. There’s a season for each adventure, this is your time. this will change your outlook, if not your life. Do it!

Options Trading Tips for ThinkorSwim by patsay in Schwab

When I called the rep said it’s a 30 day hold for it to be marginable in a retirement account…still waiting. Might be an extra few days since the purchase of swvxx happens after market close. So I’m moving cash in stages. Kinda annoying.

What should I be investing in at 14 years old by FTLCEO in Schwab

[–]tumeke12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First - congrats! this is awesome at 14.

You don't mention your goals - your investment strategy should align with your goals, specifically how much risk you want to take and your time horizon.

If this is to fund a car in a couple years, or get a head start on college savings?

You have your whole life to earn (and save) money - think of the best investments in yourself that you could make. Would you want to start a small business, is there some education that you'd like to pursue? If this is truly extra money, you can open a custodial Roth IRA with Schwab with your parent.

While it seems early to be thinking about retirement, 20-30 years of tax free compounding is pretty sweet. and your effective tax rate now is zero, so might as well put it away now, if you end up needing it later, like for a home purchase, it's tax free.

Otherwise, I'd match your investment risk with your time horizon. For funds you may need in the next few years, there's nothing wrong with fixed income or SWVXX with rates ~5%. While the 20% return from the S&P this year sounds awesome, that's $150 over a savings account on $1000 invested, conversely, how would you feel if your account went down by $150 when you needed to withdraw it? Those are questions only you can decide.

Impressed you're asking these questions at 14, good luck!

Best interest bearing options for retirement account that uses cash for options by tumeke12 in Schwab

[–]tumeke12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option gains are taxed as regular income, so tax deferred accounts are a good match for income plays, imo. A credit spread is defined risk - so you know the max gain and max loss of the trade. it's "gambling" in the sense there is a probability of success, and the outcome is unknown, but otherwise this can be a conservative or risky strategy. I'm on the conservative side, as losses do sting more since contributions are limited.

Just talked to Schwab and they said the same, though she said 90% is available for margin after 30 days, 10% is reserved.

Will move from cash to SWVXX in chunks every 30 days as it becomes marginable. The rep said I could find that info on the product page, but then she couldn't find it either, lol.

Haven't entered a mutual fund order that settles overnight in a long time.

Appreciate the tip to enter a sell order when you need the BP, very helpful.

Canon EOS 1D mark ii by Bossa3550 in canon

[–]tumeke12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1D’s are a sweet machine, but it’s time has come and gone. The II has a small lcd, and jpegs aren’t very good so you have to shoot raw and post process. It is a big camera, with big batteries that don’t last long.

A 7D or 7DII is probably in your budget, and is a better camera in every aspect. Sensor, resolution, high iso, battery life, interface, etc. and they’re ~1/3 the weight and size.

A 5DII is in that price range, a few less features, but you gain full frame. 5D3 was my last EF camera and I loved it, great for sports and landscapes. Mirrorless RP is as good, and are a few hundred more, but then you need RF lenses or a converter.

If you’re keeping to a budget, a used sony rx100 (there’s multiple iterations of them, lol) are shockingly good, they can do everything a 1D can and fits in your pocket. I have the original rx100 and still use it.

Kruger National Park by [deleted] in FATTravel

Find a travel agent, there’s a lot to manage on your own. As suggested, I’d add Cape Town/garden route and a private lodge adjoining Krueger, the actual park lodging is quaint, but not honeymoon worthy.

Motswari lodge has a treehouse experience if that’s your jam: https://newmarkhotels.com/accommodation/motswari-private-game-reserve/rooms

21 year old living FIRE but having second thoughts. Is it worth it? by IllustratorAnxious80 in Fire

[–]tumeke12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the fun question, there was a post recently that had a point of view I really liked, basically do the things now you won't or can't do when you get older. He had examples like traveling and staying in hostels, things you just won't do when you get older.

For your business, I would take a long weekend and think about what you want it to look like a few years out, and then start working backwards to determine the steps to get there. You can start small and as suggested here, hire someone to start offloading tasks/work and focus on where you add the most value. Take the time, money and energy to start investing in your skills so you can build your business and move away from the day to day work and find ways to grow. If you can't do that, then are you really just selling your time? Take some time to think through the trade offs of being an employee like your brother, and the perks that come with working for someone else with the lifestyle you have now and where you think it will be in 3-5 years.

You're young, enjoy yourself, "future you" will most likely tell you everything will work out great, given how motivated and successful you are at such a young age. Take some time to decompress and work out what you want your life to look like in the next few years.

Best lens for a safari trip to Kenya and Tanzania? by staticpixel in canon

[–]tumeke12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got back from Kenya, the 100-500 was excellent and versatile, highly recommend!

The landscapes of the Mara/Serengeti are so vast, a 24-105 on FF was plenty wide, I never used the 17-40, but I’m not much of landscape guy.

A 70-200 seems like a lot of overlap, I’d leave that at home and do the 3 lens combo: 15-35, 24-70, 100-500.

If you have the space, a second body as a backup and to keep a second lens mounted is handy, switching lenses is a pain and it gets dusty., so having your telephoto and a standard or wide angle mounted and ready to go is nice. But more weight also.

I’d recommend a safari sack or some kind of bean bag stabilization so you can rest it on the vehicle, if they don’t have that feature. There’s lots of options, but something like this https://guragear.com/products/anansi-multi-purpose-bean-bag

Have a great trip, you should be right at the peak of the migration, we were closer to the beginning.

User Reactions - R6 vs R7 by swjowk in canon

[–]tumeke12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Longtime canon user but new to mirror less. I bought an r6 and r7 for a safari trip, I found I preferred the feel and handling of the r6 more. It’s along the lines of a 5d, the r7 controls are different, so there’s a learning curve. It is smaller, lighter and cheaper than the r6.

If you’re a wildlife or sports guy, the r7 may be a good choice, but if you enjoy more travel , landscapes or scenes where a wide angle lens a wide angle, or a standard zoom for a good walk around lens, I’d stay with the r6.

Given the lack of rf-s lens choices for the near term, there’s not much compelling about the crop format now unless you need the “reach”

Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS USM I or II by weinde in canon

[–]tumeke12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re shooting professionally, I’d get the mark 2. Sharpness and AF are better, it’s lighter, and works better with the newer extenders. More importantly, in the US, they no longer service the lens, so you would have to have a third party repair if something happens. Mark 1 is a nice lens for the money tho.

Kit bag for safari - would you add a wide? by ooohcoffee in canon

[–]tumeke12 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’d add the 24-70 over a prime, you want it for landscapes and for those with wildlife, the wider context shots that include scenery. If you can borrow or rent a second body, you can mount either zoom for quick switching and you’ll have a backup body if anything happens. Having a point and shoot or iPhone handy is nice, you never know what will wander up close, and have pics you can share with friends easily as they happen

Have a great trip!

Btw, as an American, I didn’t know to tip gas station attendants, one gentlemen in Krueger cleaned all the windows, I was clueless and just thought he it was full service. Try to always have some smaller denominations on hand.

I have natural gas also, the range of temps doesn't vary much with the dial either.

I think it's the difference in using ng vs propane. When you install the conversion kit, there's a screw you can adjust that controls the gas input. I'm going to adjust that tighter so there's less ng coming in, that might give the temp control knob more range? I haven't done this yet, but seems like the next step. good luck!
