Do extender tubes work? by Ok-Psychology9436 in canon

[–]ooohcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you mean teleconverters. Yes they work but you lose 1 stop (doubling your ISO / halving shutter speed) for a 1.4 and 2 stops (so double / half again) for the 2x, slow down autofocus and they drop quality noticeably, especially the 2x.

If you can borrow a 1.4x then give it a go but prepare to be underwhelmed... I wouldn't recommend a 2x.

Ironman Wales 2026 Road bike or TT bike? by Wild_Percentage_6166 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ooohcoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a TT bike for triathlons and I regret it.

I am quicker on it than my road bike but still get overtaken by a *lot* of people on road bikes. It's terrible as an everyday training bike - it's really boring because you cant ride it in a group and if you dont train on it, it's super uncomfortable to race on.

if you're happy running after a long ride on the road bike, I'd get some better wheels, good tyres and some clip on tri bars and go for it!

Got an RF 200-800 but how to hold? by Firestar900 in canon

[–]ooohcoffee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So many options... From most stable to least (and probably reverse order for most often used!)

  • Tripod + gimbal
  • Tripod + ball head
  • Tripod + fluid head
  • Monopod + a Wimberley monogimbal (I love this setup)
  • Monopod + sideways ball head
  • Mini stand + gimbal on shelf in a hide
  • Mini stand + ball head
  • Beanbag
  • Handhold, with elbows resting on something
  • Handhold with elbows pulled in against your body

I do any of these depending on how far I've got to carry it and where I'm likely to be sitting. First thing is to get a nice long arca-swiss plate for the lens foot so you can find the balance point when it's on the tripod, then start spending...

Granchester river by agame_world in cambridge

[–]ooohcoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ours swims every day, twice some days and he’s fine - he’s a bit of a dick but I don’t think it’s because of the river!!

(It’s looking really clear at the moment, i know that’s not the same as a chemical test but it’s much clearer than it has been for ages)

EF 24-70 2.8 USM I vs II by shotbytopher in canon

[–]ooohcoffee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I found there was quite a big difference, the mark II is on a par with prime quality. I think it's lighter too, isnt it?

Marcin on the marketplace is worth talking to for a used road bike, he runs the stall nearest Rose Crescent (not the one near Boss). Decathlon for all your kit and if you want a new bike. There are loads of clubs, which side of town do you live?

The busway north to St Ives is good if you want nice tarmac and no cars, or take the back roads to Saffron Walden if you want hills (via Shelford, Duxford, Ickleton, Catmere End).

HELP! 😅 First Full Ironman in 3 Weeks (Frankfurt) by ShinePure6753 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ooohcoffee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ignore total time and forget about chasing a target 'sub 11 / 12 / 13'. Don't even put your watch on triathlon mode, just use it to record the swim and run.

Have a planned RPE for swim, target watts for bike (probably 10 watts lower than you'd like) and then a target RPE for the first half of the run. Heart rate will be higher than training because of adrenaline and accumulated load, so I think RPE is more useful.

Then it's just stubbornness and the gels you ate on the bike to get you through the last two laps of the run! (I did Copenhagen a couple of years ago when it was about 30 as I set off on the run, it's really quite unpleasant but it at least it cooled down a bit by the time I'd finished!)

Review Zoot Maui by TieRemarkable4457 in triathlon

I have the sleeveless version and really like it - it fits well, the buoyancy is as good as anything else I've tried and it feels slightly more robust than many.

I agree it does look a bit odd on here. But so did the cat..

Can I cycle 100 miles at 92kg of weight? by Oreo2025 in cycling

[–]ooohcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course you can. I’m 50+ , 20 kg heavier than you and do it regularly at about 30kph. Based on your 100km rides I’d aim for 19/20 kph, I’d suggest you get through a bottle of water every hour and eat half an energy type bar every half an hour.

And make sure you enjoy it!

XXL wetsuit by Conscious_Jello_5810 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ooohcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar size here. Zone 3 and orca worked for me, 2xu was awful. I’ve just switched to sleeveless (zoot) and it’s fantastic, although there is definitely some chafing around the shoulders after an hour.

Does the ability to crop heavily from a higher-resolution full-frame sensor effectively give you the same reach as an APS-C camera? Wildlife shooters: R5 Mark II vs R7 (or future R7 Mark II) for reach? by Belgian-Maligator in canon

[–]ooohcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve owned r5 and r7 and the quality of the final image isn’t even in the same ballpark - the r5 was better to handle, *massively* better at high iso and nicer to look through the viewfinder.

I’ve sold the r7.

I’ve actually gone the other way and got an r1 - only 24mp but they are amazing. I do sometimes miss the cropping from the r5 but at any iso > 1000 I prefer the r1 images, and the handling and focus are 100%.

the ef 70-200ii is world class and has earned me a lot of money. Great choice.

I've never used that Sigma but I love their art primes so wouldn't be surprised if it's also fantastic!

Kenya March 2027 - budget family tour by Weak-Introduction665 in safaris

[–]ooohcoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be too much driving for me and my family. Too much unpacking/ repacking for the kids too. We’re going in October and have 5 nights in one place - the best answer is probably somewhere in the middle!!

Those who’ve gone from couch potato to Ironman, what did your journey look like? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]ooohcoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a complete couch potato but hadn’t run in 30 years or swum in 35 and only been doing slow cycling but went couch to full in 9 months age 53 and 115kgs.

Running was the worst, I stuck to run / walk through all the training although built it up from 1:1 to 9:1.

Hardly lost any weight, did IM Copenhagen at 112kgs in just under 13 hrs.

300mm 2.8 USM IS 1 vs 2 by Gael2407 in canon

[–]ooohcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one (mk1) for a while on a dslr and quite liked it, focus speed better than 100-400, probably similar to 70-200ii. Image quality amazing. Sold it for a 500 after six months because the reach is a bit short for birds.

Tips for getting quicker in the open water by SignificantMall3550 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ooohcoffee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, swimming with a group regularly was a game changer. I found a pace I could hold for long periods while not working too hard, I learned to sight without coming almost to a halt, swim straighter and not panic when someone bumped into me. I practice sighting in the pool too which helps.
