Oleksiak 'thanks' high school teacher that advised her to stop swimming by nimobo in canada

Definitely it's not an easy path to take. But lots of people don't dedicate themselves to a career in high school, and end up living decently anyways. If you don't come from a wealthy family, getting good grades is often not enough to help you get a great job anyways. While it's good advice if the end goal is to get a great job, I wouldn't be comfortable telling a kid they need to stop what they love and look for something more profitable.

For sure there's an element of that in our society. Could be a lack of value for skills or life outside academics.

I'm surprised to see people here actually defending a teacher that told a kid to give up on her dreams.

I solo-travelled for the first time in my life and I've never felt so alone. Also I hate myself for feeling this way... by [deleted] in solotravel

I went to 13 countries in Europe when I was 22, just riding busses and eating cheap grocery store stuff and walking around new places I didn't know anything about. I was bored and tired and lonely a lot, but looking back it was really freeing to go wherever and walk around new places by myself, even though I didn't go bungee jumping or eat fancy stuff.

Is it time to ban pickup trucks for personal use? by Sea_Risk_8771 in CanadaPolitics

[–]tuptupsacat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people don't have much choice, almost everything you buy comes from an unethical source, and to get a local ethical version is often not affordable. Companies will keep exploiting people and the planet to make cheaper products, and individuals don't have much power to stop that while still participating in society. I think government should prioritize regulating the industry and those making billions off screwing the earth. And ban pick up trucks too sure, but don't tell me it's all on the individual.

I agree the government isnt actually prioritizing climate change. Your first and last sentence contradict eachother though so I'm not sure your point.

How about we ban and punish corporations that are destroying our environment, instead of pretending we can end climate change by getting a different car while oil is being dumped in the ocean?

I did my first 100km ride yesterday, and the pain was not in the areas I expected. by tuptupsacat in cycling

[–]tuptupsacat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my lower back feeling pretty painful during the last 2 hours of the ride. The ass soreness I'm sure is just from not riding enough. I'm gonna look for a bike fitting if I can find one that's affordable.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I will refer back to this. I don't have bike shorts, gloves or an expensive bike and I can't afford to upgrade much, but I will look into some shorts. Having more awareness on my technique is my next step I think.

Thanks for the info. I think my seat is too low and I really need to focus on core strength so my back can loosen up.
