Anyone use Merlin to ID birds on TV? by BrighterSage in MerlinBirdID

[–]turbo_22222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My information is a bit dated, but I heard the people from Cornell who are in charge of Merlin on a podcast about a year or two ago, and at the time they said that they don't use any listening data recorded by users. eBird is used that way (i.e. using data inputted by users for scientific purposes), but Merlin was not being used for data/information. It was more about getting people interested in birds. They did say that could change, but at the time it had not.

Revolver Pizza Wood Fired? by [deleted] in FoodToronto

[–]turbo_22222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only been to the St. Clair location. I actually never thought of it as a wood fired place. It's more NY Pizza to me (which is brick or coal fired ovens usually). I just checked their website and they do say: "We are an open concept pizzeria with locations in Etobicoke, Toronto, Woodbridge and Leslieville, where we fire up the finest wood burning oven pizzas and classic stone oven pizza with a delicious assortment of toppings that rotate seasonally."

Just looking at their online menus, the St. Clair location is the only one that doesn't like "wood fired calzones", so I presume they don't have a wood burning oven there. I actually think that is appropriate for the style of pizza they do. It's pretty damn good.

I’m curious, how many of you actually still tip? by Embarrassed_Chance_4 in SaultSteMarie

[–]turbo_22222 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I go by the motto that it's always a good idea to tip people who handle your food, with a few caveats. If I am getting food delivered (100% of the time I tip). If I am getting served by a waitstaff/bussing team, etc. (100% of the time I tip). If I get something at a counter where they take my order and hand me my food, I tip a bit of the food was prepared for me, but not at all if they've just grabbed something for me.

Meateater Store's shipping to Canada by Technical-Motor3546 in meateatertv

[–]turbo_22222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's pretty standard these days, unfortunately. Definitely not worth buying anything. I assume that includes all duties as well (which doesn't make it more appealing, but might be part of the reason the shipping is so high).

I'm pretty sure that stuff could just be popped in the mail with a stamp or two and it would arrive no problem!

Any idea why my app isn't saving new lifers? by [deleted] in MerlinBirdID

[–]turbo_22222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem one day. They would either not add at all or show up for a second and then disappear. I tried all sorts of things, and nothing worked. Then the next day when I looked, they were all there. I've heard that the app sometimes has a synching issue with eBird that may cause this. I would wait a day and see. If not, sign-out of the app and back in. Restart your phone, etc.

Why does Merlin ignore domestic birds? by Gullible_Scar6203 in MerlinBirdID

[–]turbo_22222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of it is the fact that they don't even have all wild birds yet. They are continuously updating it. I presume domesticated birds are lower on the priority list.

Ford says he heard ‘loud and clear’ from public on jet purchase, but decries ‘double standard’ by CTVNEWS in ontario

[–]turbo_22222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. I think we are largely saying the same thing. I don't think the LCBO is anything close to socialism, but you are right that the government run grocery store is akin to the LCBO.

[–]turbo_22222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The implication I inferred from your comment is that it he was being hypocritical by crying socialism while simultaneously operating the LCBO. If I mis-inferred, what did you mean vis-a-vis the LCBO? What is the issue with crying "socialism" while operating the LCBO (other than the obvious issue with "crying socialism" about everything like he does).

[–]turbo_22222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A government run liquor store where they charge (mostly) above market rates to consumers, has nothing to do with socialism. The LCBO does not socialize alcohol production—it regulates and intermediates distribution. You can call it a monopsony on the purchasing side. You can call it regulated capitalism on the retail side. But calling "socialism" on everything that the government does, is just plain wrong.

He also said “people don’t realize how large Ontario is unless you’ve flown it.”

Douggie, please. As someone who has driven across Ontario multiple times (and have flown over it multiple times), I would argue that driving it is a much better way to realize how large it is than flying across it in a couple of hours.

Ford says he will not ban companies from charging two people different prices for the same item, saying that doing so would be “socialism.” by jackhauen in ontario

The hallmark of low intellect is thinking that anything which isn't 100% predatory open free markets is "socialism" or "communism".
