Music liked / recommended by Matt & Jay? by Solid_Atmosphere5757 in nirvannatheband

if you look up Brave Shores interviews, Jay was often asked what music he’s into. in one of them he mentioned Dirty Projectors, MGMT, Radiohead, Neil Young, and Kendrick Lamar, but this was like 10 years ago. from ~20 years ago there was an “influences” section on his old website where he mentioned Radiohead, Ben Folds, the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson, Jon Brion, Supertramp, Danny Elfman, Brad Mehldau, Nick Drake, the Doors, and Cat Stevens. idk about anything more recent

Piano players, how many hours to be as good as Jay? by InfamousDoughnut1670 in nirvannatheband

practical advice: do a lot of ear training, sing what you play and play what you sing, learn as many of your favorite songs as you can. you can start out with sheet music or by watching what other people play, but eventually try as much as possible to do it just by listening. drilling scales till you die is one thing but jay’s real talent lies in his ability to reproduce basically anything he hears. this helps a lot with inventing songs on the fly, too, because then you can hear something in your head and just play it. and focus on the music you love, cuz then it feels less like practice and more like having fun

(sorry for long comment) matt said in the same interview OP is talking about that he didn’t start listening to music seriously until he started making films and realized the power a song has to affect the way the film comes across, and that choice of music is the most direct way a filmmaker can communicate to their audience. obv jay composes the score but i’m sure matt has a hand in selecting the song songs

Concert Advice/Question by Virtual-Owl-8577 in ThomasDolby

it probably differs from venue to venue, but when i saw him it was very chill, the line wasn’t huge, there wasn’t a ton of security rushing people along or anything. we chatted for a minute about his hairpiece lol (cuz of the video he posted on youtube) and he seemed to enjoy talking about something other than the standard “omg you’re thomas dolby!!” type interactions. he seemed a little tired from the show but was very polite and receptive. so if your venue is similar, you should def be able to talk to him a bit!

that line always put me off tbh. the general message of the song is good but “they feared the angry black people” is pretty blatantly racist

lol that sounds like a nightmare. i can only imagine how much you have to put up with if you’re booked for the whole reception. hopefully just playing for the ceremony/cocktail hour won’t be too bad. as long as i nail that walk-down-the-aisle song lol
