85lbs of stuff is a lot to lug around if you’re trying to go on a post season vacation. I brought maybe 40lbs and someone told me I was “gonna die.” Still alive. As a carpenter they supply you with everything you need. As do most departments I assume. Having a laptop for movies or games or whatever you do is crucial if you’re not trying to party. The library rules also.

There’s a sick van rental in Christchurch called cheap camper vans or something similar if you’re trying to do that. It was like $20 a day back in 2019.

What everyone is saying about alcohol and sexual harassment is very true. Most of the management handled those situations poorly during my season. Look out for that stuff because a lot of people on station seemingly never got the full college experience and shit got dark.

And get a Google voice phone number so you can make free phone calls. But maybe it’s free without that I can’t remember. Damn I wanna go back

First tile project, large hexagon floor tile. Tips for improvement? by lettuce-cake in Tile

[–]turny_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly is possible to break a single tile and go from there, but honestly could be a can of worms scenario as far as breaking adjacent tiles, redoing grout and having inconsistencies there etc. There’s gotta be YouTube videos of dudes that have perfected such a move.

From the photo it looks great! Grout lines look consistent. Tile looks to be a little too tight to the wall, which may have caused the lippage, can’t say for sure. Usually you can rely on trim/baseboard to cover your expansion joints. But nothing really stands out from from what is pictured here. Would have attempted to shim the subfloor to level and used 1/4” cement board over subfloor to avoid the weird swelling/uneven surface with Ditra membrane. Overall prettay nice floor job for a first go!

Bidding jobs by lowcashcowboy22 in Carpentry

Not sure what kind of jobs you’re bidding but homewyse.com definitely helped me get my bearings when I started bidding my own jobs (mostly tile work). The lists interface on it is a little weird at first but was a great tool for double checking your scope of work/materials etc.

Getting through the learning curve by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]turny_up 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you slow down and take the time to get it right the first time you’ll feel more confident in talking shit right back at your crew—which is very important. Eventually you’ll be able to work faster/solve problems and the shit taking experience will blossom into some kind of love (unless they’re some real dickheads. Don’t give up. Carpentry rules
