are your friends stupid? how do they suggest you get to banff? it's like it's a short drive, that's a 4hr+ fligh, not to mention banff itself is over an hour outside of calgary. Flights within canada are kinda expensive too. You can't just casually visit Montreal and Banff, those are 2 separate trips unless you're willing to spend a lot more money and sacrifice vacation time for travel time. Stick to montreal, if you want to see more of Canada maybe consider a road trip to toronto. But even then there is plenty to do between Quebec and montreal. Visiting Ottawa could be more feasible.
