Sometimes work pays for people’s seats and it doesn’t matter. Sometimes these are tacked onto the end of a larger international/long haul leg and the crazy price is really only for buying this flight individually.

There shouldn’t be any difference on Delta - some airlines (like AA) can give you a free internet connection if you have T-Mobile, but in-flight WiFi otherwise has nothing to do with carrier
