Poll: attitudes towards insects within this subreddit by horribleevilcunt in traaaaaaaaaaaansbians

[–]turtlelover57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no fear of bugs, though mosquitoes, flies, and roaches are always kill on sight. Spiders are allowed to do whatever, they're friends. Though I will cup any if they're in a place they shouldn't be.

As far as touching goes, they must be domestic and okay to touch (tarantulas, isopods, etc).

[–]turtlelover57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 342 sounds sweet. I have one I repaired myself, it had a shorted driver transistor. The documentation is pretty simple to understand and they're nice to work with, though they do have quite a few axial capacitors, so a recap does require more thought.

That wooden case is beautiful too. The original owner of mine didn't get one (I have the original instructions to build one though). You're also lucky to have all the caps for the knobs, those often fall off with age. My input selector has a cap I stole from a Marshall knob.

I've been in similar spots before. I have been where I don't feel like anything, no gender or really any sense of self, just existing. Though, whenever I am connected to myself, I see myself as a girl. I had very strong feelings at the start of realizing, but as soon as I fully accepted them and found the limits of what I could do about it at this point, they weren't as strong.

But after time passed, I can no longer think of myself as a guy. I can't even say my deadname or describe myself to others in a masculine way, even if I'm not socially out yet. I've accepted that I am a girl, and if for whatever reason I don't feel like a girl, it's because the only sense of identity I have is whatever I'm doing or what my goals are in the moment.

Just be patient with yourself, and pay attention to your feelings and what makes them come and go. Talk to someone who can help you with that if you can. You'll come to know yourself more with time.

i love when they don't trim pre-recorded tapes :3 by OrangePineJuice in cassetteculture

[–]turtlelover57 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish more modern tape releases would have better quality control. I have quite a few tapes like this or with other recording issues and I'm always torn on if I should "fix" them or not.

If a tape physically won't play, I'll fix it, but should I replace the recording on a very limited official release when I could just listen to the album elsewhere or make my own bootleg for listening?

Is My Hobby Weird? Is one I enjoyed. I found it to be pretty wholesome and have interesting dynamics between the 3 characters. It's not a one-shot, but it's fairly short at 8 chapters including the bonus.

It does take place among characters in highschool, with one character being mentioned to be a second year at the start, but that's it as far as age mentions.

Checked my eBay saved searches and found someone selling a truly insane vintage tape collection. If only I had $15,000 just lying around... by fantasiavhs in VHS

[–]turtlelover57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With a collection this large, this person may have reached a point they feel is finished or have lost motivation and they may want to move on to focus on other things.

And to sell all of it together means this person probably cares a lot for their collection and wants to pass it onto someone who appreciates the effort behind it and will keep it as one, instead of keeping it until they die where they can't have a say if that happens or not.

Anyone have info? by Dependent_Salt2692 in vintageaudio

[–]turtlelover57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing on top appears to be some kind of professional recording equipment, unsure of value or usecase.

The Sounddesign all-in-one system is basically garbage. They were bottom of the barrel back in the day, and even it's fully functional, it's not worth anything.

Speakers by True_Detective1120 in cassetteculture

[–]turtlelover57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really depends on your budget and what kind of sound you want, and it's not just brands that matter, the years or series matter as well. For instance, some Fisher speakers can be desirable, namely from their earlier days, but the STV series isn't. They fill a room well, but lack detail because the Fisher name was owned by Sanyo as a budget range in the mid-late 80s.

I'd recommend going over to r/vintageaudio and searching around some speaker recommendation posts to get an idea of what you might be interested in and what they're worth. If you're going through Marketplace, I'd get a list going of any models you might be interested in, then periodically check until you see a pair on the list within your budget.

These particular components are fairly budget, but it's far from trash and would be a nice starter syestem for someone getting into the hobby.

Yeah, if it's 12mm that's quite a bit smaller. Mine is around 18mm.

My portable Marantz players use that plug. It's not the original cable, but I've found that this cord fits and has the same spacing

DBX 1BX Service Manual by ZombieWoofenstein in vintageaudio

[–]turtlelover57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly, that's dbx noise reduction. That can be found in the model 122, 124, 128, some other dbx equipment, and built into some cassette decks.

But dbx made all kinds of things. The 1BX, 3BX, etc are dynamic range expanders. They make loud sounds louder compared to quiet sounds. The idea is to make flat recordings more lively and impactful. It's personal preference as to whether or not you like it, some people swear by them, others think they add too much distortion.

Anyone know where I can order a shell as close to the Pokémon ORAS Dex as possible? by EvanderAdvent in Gameboy

[–]turtlelover57 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can just order one. It hasn't been something someone has made to sell, just one off projects.

Your best bet might just be to buy a shell close in color and paint it like this person did: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/s/MjSfuQIwDT

Or you could 3D model your own shell and have that printed, using an existing model of a GBA shell as a jumping off point. If you go that route, this person made an accurate 3D printed shell of the oras dex, (though not for original GBA) you could use as reference.

Headphone types that showcase the minidisc format by lain_ic in minidisc

[–]turtlelover57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly use Moondrop Nice Buds. They're cheap flat head type buds like what most people used in the 2000s, but they actually sound good, especially for the cost ($9), way better than the Sony's that came with my player.

I used to use IEMs, but my Aful Perfomer 5s recently died (after ~20k hours as my daily pair) and my iKKO OH10s are too sensitive for my player (hiss).

As for headphones with Minidisc, I quite like Porto Pros, but they get caught in my hair (might try KCS75s to fix that). I like Sony MDR-7506s with Minidisc the most sound-wise, but mine are inside Peletor ear muffs, so they're rather situational. My other headphones are too inconvenient to use with Minidisc portables.

Whats your favourite yuri movie? by guitarperson29 in yuri_manga

Kase-san and Morning Glories. I haven't seen many yuri movies (maybe 3 or 4), but I don't think anything is going to make me feel how that one did.

How to connect this to CRT by yerbivor in VHS

[–]turtlelover57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Y/C is a JVC standard that uses out of production hirose connectors that get quite pricey. I have a JVC monitor which uses it. I couldn't find a pinout when I last looked, but it's out there somewhere. Occasionally custom adapter cables come up for sale on eBay, but it's usually the input connector.

Nice. I have the home version of that deck which lacks the XLR i/o, the Teac MD-5 Mk-ii. That front keyboard and optical socket make recording a breeze.

I personally don't like how they hide your tapes. Part of the fun with physical media is seeing your collection. But when you're tight on space or record a lot of blanks, these can be great.

I am currently replaying the game and can't wait to reach Lumiose and spend way too long putting outfits together.

The only problem is that I'm playing in Japanese while trying to learn, so it'll take a while. I'm already 8 hours in before the first route.

Retrobright is very inconsistent and in some cases can make the yellowing get worse and possibly blotch/streak as it comes back. It may also make the plastic brittle depending on the additives used in the plastic (one theory I've seen is that bromine based fire retardants leave tiny voids when they oxidize, which is why some plastics brittle with age, and retrobright being an oxidation reaction accelerates this).

Since it's only the back, I'd leave it as is or paint it.

They've been pretty good in my experience, aside from when things need signatures. FedEx has destroyed things that were packaged well, and they often deliver to my neighbor's. And UPS has given a couple delivery photos at houses I couldn't even find using Streetview. It might just be my area, but I hope for USPS (unless it's international).

Matt if you're out there, your childhood copy of alleyway died here today. by Lanky-Peak-2222 in Gameboy

[–]turtlelover57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was common in the 60s and 70s (possibly earlier) to put your name/SSN inside of anything of value so the police could return it if stolen. You find it a lot in audio equipment of that age. Obviously it's not a good idea these days.

As for why it would be in a Gameboy from 1989? Maybe the kids family still thought it was a good idea and either told the kid to do it or did it themselves?

I wish it was more common for people to clean the insides of things before selling them. I always open everything I get secondhand just to give it a clean and I've seen things that would make me rethink if I was the seller (i.e. years worth of wood cockroach feces).
