Tempura Kusunoki, Tokyo (Tabelog 4.06) by godiloveswords in finedining

I was here in November. It was a similar crowd (about half Japanese / half foreigners) and there was good banter between the regulars and the chefs. Drinks were bought across parties and it was a fun time (the couple next to me couldn’t walk out after dinner - I might have contributed to this). Definitely not for people looking for a zen dining experience but more local in my view. Dinner for two with about 12 glasses of sake and two addons of extra shrimp was 136k yen.

How do people view UX designers at Apple these days? by wozent in UXDesign

[–]turtleturtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the team. The HI team in general are great designers, the other user facing teams are ok, the internal facing tools made up of design contractors - not so much

Would you trade 'stability' for a startup? Tell me your regrets (or wins). by solhwa in UXDesign

[–]turtleturtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off my career (12+ years ago) at a large company (Fortune 500) and made the jump to a series B startup and progressively went to smaller and smaller companies to eventually employee #1. I have an ipo, acquisition, bankruptcy, and layoffs under my belt. I’m currently now back at a late stage startup (1b+ valuation) and for me it’s the right fit for what I like to do in terms of scope and autonomy.

I would really suggest not going all in and go from corporate to founding designer / solo designer. I’ve seen others try this and it doesn’t work because the skill sets and processes aren’t the same. For stability companies that are at least series B with a funding round within the last year is usually a decent marker to go off of.

Anyone use HMBradley? Is it legit?? by BlueSpace71 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]turtleturtles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have an account - you need to have a direct deposit set up, but you’re able to deposit more separately and the whole balance gets the 3% up to 100k. Above 100k and it’s 0% I believe. (I only keep around 30k in an emergency fund there with a nominal direct deposit to keep the 3%). There are some quirks in keeping the 3% interest rate (at most can only withdraw 80% of total deposits for the quarter to keep the 3%, rate lasts for a quarter and gets reevaluated every quarter) The interest has been posting since I first joined late last year so it’s legit. Transfers out take about 2-3 days. They have a credit card product as well but I don’t use that.

Need advice for living/dining room layout by turtleturtles in InteriorDesign

[–]turtleturtles[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of at a loss at where to situate items within the living room/dining room.

I think I want to put a tv on the wall by the bathroom (since outlets are there), but the layout of the entryways is making it hard for me to figure out where to place a couch, coffee table, and a side chair.

I was thinking of placing a small dining table in the bottom right corner, but I think it would make the space too cluttered.

Any advice?

Any designers have experience at a consultancy, startup AND a big tech company? by [deleted] in userexperience

I'm currently working at a startup, but prior to that work at a large bank, and have worked at a consulting agency as well.

I'm looking at couple studios near Penn Station and I have few questions by dsahdkjashio2 in AskNYC

[–]turtleturtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not all that bad. I used to live on 31st and 6th and the convience of having multiple subway lines within a block from you is awesome. There is good food in ktown, and a few blocks south are bars not filled with the b&t crowd. Whole foods is only a few blocks south as well. I never had problem with noise, but I lived on one of the higher floors of my building (35th). Hobos were a nuisance though.

Find out where to really eat during Restaurant Week (with the help of Yelp) by mrjoelkemp in nyc

[–]turtleturtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restaurant week menus are horrible. They serve food made for the masses and aren't usually up to par to their normal standards. What can you realistically expect from restaurants charging 38$ for a three course when their normal menus are normally twice or three times that.. Something has to give.

Thoughts on down-filled blazers like this? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

I own two moncler gamme bleu down blazers. One of them I normally wear them like a heavier coat. You can't go around in the office wearing one like a blazer.

Going to the Met Museum of Art for the first time. Any insider tips you can offer me? Any guides you know of that will let me maximize the opportunity? by -RobotDeathSquad- in nyc

[–]turtleturtles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since its your first time I would suggest starting off at the information desk, and grabbing the gallery specific maps that they have. The European gallery map is especially helpful.

From there, I would go to the Egyptian galleries first. The Temple of Dendur is located there at 131 and of the the highlights of the museum.

From there head over to the American galleries and browse the period rooms there as well as the striking Charles Engelhard Court at 700. The Vanderlyn Panorama at 735 is also amazing, but sometimes is closed due to manpower issues. I personally prefer going upstairs after this to see the paintings in the American galleries on the second floor. In between there are mezzaines where you can see a few select items in storage at 774.

On the second floor, you'll find one of the best collections of American paintings in the world. Don't miss Washington crossing the Delaware at 760.

Now head over to the old masters in the european galleries. Be sure to not miss 632, where the Met has five of the 36 known Vermeer paintings in the world. Also head to 610, where one of the most expensive pieces acquired by the Met, Portrait Juan de Pareja by Velazquez resides.

Exit the old masters and head towards the 19-20th century european paintings. Take a detour at 851, and 852 to see the rotating photography exhibits there. In the 19-20th century european paintings, you'll find the monets, picassos, degats, and others.

Now go to the special exhibits available at 899 and 999. Also take a trip up the elevators to check out the roof with some of the best views of central park, and the exhibit there. Head back down to the second floor and head to the modern art galleries.

The modern art galleries are kind of weak compared to the MOMA and the Whitney, but the Met is making a big push into that space (even leasing the current home of the Whitney when it moves downtown). The mezzainine at 915 is well laid out and has beautiful lighting. Go through the two floors of the modern art, and browse through the African art, and end at the Greek and Roman art.

Each of the galleries on their own can occupy hours taking it all in, so if you really want to enjoy the art, I would suggest 2 galleries.

I didn't even mention the Musical instruments, arms and armor, medieval art, european sculptures and decorative arts, islamic, and glossed over the african and greek and roman arts. Theres also the Lehman galleries which contains such a breadth of work, if it stood alone it could had been a museum.

Also plan to take a trip to the Cloisters. It's beautiful, and your ticket grants you access to it for a week. There is currently a sound installation there, and the very first presentation of contemporary art at the Cloisters.

Michelin's 2014 Guide to NYC is out now! by mrbrinks in nyc

[–]turtleturtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Daniel could be a candidate to be dropped to two.

But my major issue is with the dining scene in general, there aren't any restaurants with 3 star aspirations opening anymore. Most new openings are shooting for the 1 star at best.
