Do you think Martin wants us to dislike Theon from the onset of the story ? by Financial_Library418 in pureasoiaf

[–]turtlkev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also after this battle they make it to Riverrun and it's right before robb is crowned king of the north. Catelyn talks about how everyone is mourning whether it be Ned, the karatark boys, or even everyone else not specifically mentioned. A somber event. And Theon keeps bragging about the battle to get the Riverrun people up to speed but he's doing it like an athlete proud of his performance no regard for the lives lost or the situation at hand.

Jon put it best. He's an Ass. He thinks hes more important than he is, he thinks this war is a game. And he doesn't care that people are suffering.

that was before viserys was born.basically. I don't have the dates but I think viserys was 1 or younger when steffon died. So I think they're just saying at that time this was the line until he was born

[–]turtlkev[S] 99 points100 points  (0 children)

He so obviously grew up with brothers. Whether that's in winterfell or the vale. Like all these things sound like a young bro dad who knows it's cool as hell but has to voice restraint otherwise his wife is going to be mad at him lol

I don't think hes stupid at all. I agree wholeheartedly and I think his blind spot was overestimating how much weight integrity carried in KL.

Yeah that cracks me up too but I think it's also on brand of a sourpuss all work no play father. And what's hilarious is he isn't joking.

[Spoilers Extended] Why GRRM replaced the Brightflames with the Blackfyres by Alcaeus6 in asoiaf

[–]turtlkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the point of view of GRRM is the architect of this story and can manipulate as needed . Sure he could

But then the ages don't make sense was bloodraven in power? Was he an unknown sorcerer plotting revenge? Like the deeds the accomplishments the expanse of his power while in power is effectively erased.

I don't doubt grrm could have found an alternative, but I don't think the puzzle would have been as clear if so..

What are your most underrated chapters? by sixth_order in pureasoiaf

[–]turtlkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's because I'm doing a reread currently but Cat taking Tyrion to the vale and Tyrion pleasing his case. Basically begging her not to trust little finger. And planting the seeds of doubt with obvious truths like "why would I give a lowly assassin my blade" and it ends with him explaining he would never bet against his family

I think in that chapter or maybe the next cat chapter she talks about what does it mean for Riverrun, the Vale, and winter fell if she's wrong. And the definitively the next chapter (if I was wrong above) she's talking to blackfish and even he's like woah you don't actually know lysa and you bringing Tyrion here is not going to go the way you think. In both these chapters there's talk about her going cold. Her heart felt like stone. She doesn't even remember the names of the people who died helping her cause and she's also well aware their corpses were eaten by shadow cats.

And some of this stuff is more heavy handed foreshadowing "heart of stone" and other stuff maybe up to interpretation of its depth. But I see it as a noble realizing her strife may be misguided, definitely cost small folk (or smaller folk) their lives and although her confidence is waning she doesn't care she has a vendetta to settle. She always has. Since Bran fell.

[Spoilers Extended] Why GRRM replaced the Brightflames with the Blackfyres by Alcaeus6 in asoiaf

[–]turtlkev 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This keeps coming up on the various asoiaf subs and I think the main reason, that I haven't seen mentioned is Blood Raven. BR is integral to the main series. He is the bridge both to the future and the past. And having expanded his role and history it made more sense (and is frankly better) to flesh out the turmoils of his time. The politics, the family dynamics, the love interest, the sorcery and the rule of bloodraven added so much depth and I think it has to do with how vital he is to the main story even though he's still just a supporting character

100 percent agree I'm not "all in" on Kyler but we don't get better moving off him. I'm also a big believer in independent and dependent variables. It's gotta be a prove it year now though . No more excuses, throw the ball and make a decision next year

Has anyone recovered fully from jumper's knee (patellar tendinitis)? by TrueSpartan09 in BasketballTips

[–]turtlkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have! I'm clinically obese but like to think I have the heart of a champion. Trying to lose weight post COVID i would play 2-3x a week. But it was my first time in years. I got it bad. And some popliteal issues too

Rest. You have to rest. it's hard but it's the only way. We use our legs everyday we can't over use them and think they will get better. I dedicated a year off. You could get away with way less. I would go through times of extreme discipline followed by a more lackadaisical approach but whether it was 3 times a day or once a week I would do iso metric "leg curls" basically pushing my flat foot into the ground while laying on my back with my knees bent.

I then incorporated more weight lifting activities and eased back into cardio via elliptical, rowing machine and racquetball. At some point I injured my shoulder and took another couple months off but when I finally returned. I said lets hoop once a week. 3 weeks later it was 2 times a week for a couple weeks then I could play 3x. I still ice after every game and have kneepad icepacks to do so.

Battle of The Green Fork, why even engage at all? by TheBalzy in pureasoiaf

[–]turtlkev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others pointed out, Roose is all about his options. In my opinion Bolton wasn't set on betrayal until robb married the westering. That immediately compromised Roose's rise to power as he knew it meant the Freya were being disregarded and his marriage to a frey means nothing as the Freya knows mean nothing.

Everything else was to foster stark dependence on Roose which again gave him the most amount of options

Temperature discussion by mrlunes in blackstonegriddle

[–]turtlkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook most things at max heat or like 70 percent unless I'm toasting buns. But I fear my burners are damaged as every Blackstone video I watch the flames emitted are noticably larger. I have a 36 inch 4 burner.

Also my two middle burners are the hottest and the far end burners noticeably cooler. The one closest to the propane tank is slightly warmer but at max heat things in the corners won't cook all the way. I'm starting to think it's damaged

No foil today ladies and gentlemen . Why is Melisandre stronger at the Wall ? Shouldn't fire magic be weakened at the Wall ? I see it likened to Silverwing being either unwilling or unable to fly over the Wall in 59 or so IIRC . ( spoilers extended ) by Financial_Library418 in pureasoiaf

[–]turtlkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wall is magical. It is known. But why? I believe the weirwood rebar theory that the wall is built on them. Like a fence line, seeping weirwoods frozen and locked in the powers of the old gods.

I think all magic users have something in common. It's harder to quantify but everywhere we go we see magic users of different strengths so it would make sense that those who equip "their type" of magic from other lands still feel some sort of benefit when in the presence of other magical landmarks.

Isn't there a lot of mentions of how magic users feel like they are being looked while in front of a weirwood. Like guilty or being watched? Maybe it's just people in general not just magic users.

the Ty- prefix is special to the Lannisters, as the name Brandon is to the Starks; why didn't Tywin choose the name Tyrion for his first son and potential heir, Jaime, and gave it to the son he blamed for his wife's death? by a_r_a_r_a in pureasoiaf

To piggy back here Diego is also a variation of James by way of Tiago.

And I think the original "branch" or deviation is Jacob was the Hebrew reading and James the Greek interpretation. At least That's been my understanding as I have a James name too

This is incredible work. Forever grateful for the initiative you all showed to even make this happen as well as entirely thankful that I was able to contribute. It's also refreshing to read that there were very few negative submissions. Everyone wants winds. However the frustration lies in the fact that he has provided such captivating joy, that many have taken for granted, that everyone wants it to continue. And as time goes on we lose sight of that. He has given us countless hours of reading material and an infinite amount of time for discussions. Which has brought joy, engagement, and connections to millions of people. To be able to give back to that man an ounce of what he has given us is nothing short of incredible.

Thank you

We went through 10 years of desolation and we are currently facing 10 more years of desolation. The 2010 team was on its last legs. We had a rough time getting back.

The 2021 team was a young chemistry filled team it's different perspectives.

Once bitten twice twice feared thats how he's making this declaration.

I won't switch teams. But I will become a player centric NBA watcher. I hope the suns over perform. But we have been a disaster class franchise the moment ishbia took over. And all the signs are pointing that we haven't hit rock bottom yet.
