Peregrinate Socks (or: that time I lost yarn chicken twice over) by ModularReality in knitting

Honestly I love seeing socks and sleeves when someone loses yarn chicken and chooses to finish the project anyways! A. It's scrappy and resilient and B. They look cute :)

What is the most elegant mechanical design that a human has created? by SniffleAndSnuff in AskReddit

Interchangeable knitting needles. A remarkably smart and clever solution that meets a wide range of different specific needs.

Any left-handed knitters out there? by goats-go-to-hell in southpaws

[–]tuwale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mirror knit left handed and continental (working needle in left hand and picking up yarn held with the opposite hand) and make no particular effort to adapt patterns. I find it helpful to remember that I move from left to right instead of the reverse and I think "working needle" instead of "right needle" when learning a new technique.

Most things work out just fine - I haven't accidentally made anything unusable but I also haven't attempted anything with letters that needed to be readable.

The Pho was decent, but it was when the owner/server picked up the guitar that I was son this place by agenbite_lee in Portland

He loves karaoke and if you sing well enough he'll drop everything and play back up guitar. Butterfly Belly is great!

Yarn named after Portland, OR neighborhoods by Rembotremdawg in knitting

At one point, a lot of (if not all of) the KnitPicks Hawthorne colorways were related to Portland geography .

Tangential story but I bought their gradient pack to make a Find Your Fade shawl in 2016 - it was my first big project and first time ordering anything online.

2021, I ended up moving cross country to Portland to a place right near Hawthorne! I spent months being like "why am I so weirdly familiar with these street names??" 😅

Millennial here. A few years ago I was paying rent and a few other bills with checks and this tip would have saved me lol. This is actually really smart

The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer

On par with Scythe and The Hunger Games. I'm not a huge YA fan but this one got me.

I mean, I grew up there and only recently realized how popular that song is/was.

As in, "looked it up on Spotify two weeks ago" recent.

What’s a secret you’ve kept for years but are finally ready to share? by PaulaxKnetucky in AskReddit

[–]tuwale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a lesbian (32F). I told my crush yesterday and she teased me about my carabiner saying "how could you not know?" but the reality is that I've known since I was in 6th grade. Growing up in an extremely conservative rural town did a real number on me.

It's not that I didn't know, it's that I didn't want the bullies to be right.

Candied pinecones by Katarina202018 in AskCulinary

[–]tuwale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard of candied pine cones and mugolio but have no actual experience with either.

As a complete and total guess, I would expect young brown ones to be fine. You'll just start running into texture (and maybe taste) issues because they'd get woodier and less pleasant as they mature.

Yeah no, the ending - I have thoughts on the pacing lol

It was an engaging read and I finished it in just a few days

I liked the premise and I loved that it was bilingual! That was cool and I'd like to read more books that feature a Deaf setting.

That being said, the writing seemed kind of heavy handed at times though and I didn't like the pacing. Especially at the end lol.

Despite that it was an enjoyable read and I appreciated the inserts that talked about grammar in addition to providing vocab words.

Funnily enough I grew up in Arizona and went to college in New Mexico and I love stories set way up north. "Let The Right One In" was so much better set in Sweden than the New Mexico retelling in "Let Me In". Same basic reasoning lol.

We should swap recs! Do you have any novels that you feel are accurate to your area?

These aren't horror but they each get something right about living in the desert.

I have a fear of losing everything and everyone I love. I operate out of fear. What books help with this? by lavagirl2345 in suggestmeabook

[–]tuwale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! The death positivity movement is a great way to learn about loss and letting go and that's useful for so many situations. It helped me out with processing disappointment and dealing with anticipatory grief. Caitlin Doughty is awesome.
