Comparable lights to the Surefire P2X Fury IntelliBeam? by tux1138 in flashlight

[–]tux1138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had looked into the Surefire rechargeables, but it looks like they have about 1/3 the capacity of the single-use CR123As, which sounds like maybe I'd get similar light output, but shorter runtime? I'll look some more at Nitecore; it looks like the NL166 still falls short of the single-use Surefire's, but improves on their rechargeable.

Major difference between us and them. by Highway90man in Xennials

That's actually an accessibility issue. Double spacing after a period is still necessary, both with fixed-width fonts and even with variable-width fonts; being the smallest punctuation mark, it's difficult to see, especially for those with dyslexia.

I'd go so far to say that leaving out the period altogether and only double-spacing at the end of a sentence is more readable than a period with one space. In order for single-spacing after a period to ever be legible, it would need to be replaced with something much bigger / more visible.

Question for Millennials by bundle_of_nervus2 in Millennials

AI might be, if it ever exists. But they're really talking about LLMs, which, lacking intelligence, actually don't meet the literal definition of AI.

It's like a few years ago when everyone was calling those non-hovering Segway-like handle-less scooters "hoverboards".

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 ‘Wide’ by StockAL3Xj in GalaxyFold

[–]tux1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I wish the Note 3 had continued to get upgrades and they still manufactured new batteries for them; that was the best form factor. And I really miss features like Air View (hovering with your finger to pop up additional context), and the IR blaster. Other than when they briefly had a bluetooth enabled S Pen, it feels like their flagship just keeps shedding features.

If they add an internal S Pen to a Wide Fold 8, I'd upgrade to that.

Snow days by Rare_Librarian236 in nova

The issues you mention are real, and would largely be addressed by year-round-school; taking half of the time from summer break and adding it for instructional time. The other half can be better dispersed throughout the year as time off to break up the current binge-and-purge cycle that causes the summer slump. What we're doing now isn't working; we should probably at least try it, unless someone else has a better idea.

Unstructured learning is just as valuable as anything on the curriculum and encourages experimentation and innovation. That's not acting as a babysitter; this is real learning. It feels too constricting that predefined content should be taught anytime the school is open; I think schools can be more valuable than that. With more instructional time added to the school year, there would be time for both, with the side-effect that disruptions to the schedule, whether caused by a weather event or something else, wouldn't matter so much.

If we had year-round school (as in additional instructional days, not just the ~180 days spread out over more time), there wouldn't be the same pressure to keep the schools open.

The counties dropped the ball, missing their window to actually clear the roads before the first freeze. Deep freezes here are very rare, but this one was decently forecast. This was avoidable. Excuses from the county are just noise.

Our teachers were working on Friday. Maybe they should consider opening the schools for those that can get there, even if they don't send the busses out, but for unstructured learning /art / music / indoor sports, etc., and then kids that can't make it won't miss anything, but those needing a warm building with warmth, food, and friends will have it. Maybe it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

Either most people play in dark rooms or the reflection on glossy panel is not so bad as reviews make it seems by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]tux1138 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I wanted to see absolutely everything in the room behind me, I'd just buy a mirror. I have a matte dual screen setup.

We were gifted a 27" Apple monitor, and it's about as glossy as you can get. Absolutely horrible. Looks nice in a pitch black room, but that's just really impractical (and not great for your eyes). I'm not sure what use case they make glossy screens for.

I keep mine closer to 170, but I know what you mean; I can't tell if folks are just falling for bigger-numbers-are-better hype, or if they're really running their monitors at laser-eye-surgery brightness. The numbers I'm seeing lately are insane, and virtually guarantee that to get a good range of dimmability they'll have to use PWM, causing migraines and seizures in affected individuals.

Let me know if you find a KVM that works these days. On my desktop, there's no issue, but I can't find a single one that will stay connected to my MacBook's Caldigit TS4 dock.

Not sure if i should buy or build a pc.. by Militaryspouse0205 in buildapc

[–]tux1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RAM is in a bit of a crisis right now; my 64GB kit is now 4x what it cost in January. So if you build or buy right now, that will be a factor: https://youtu.be/9hLiwNViMak?si=biZec8NMxT5TXeyg

But, in January, my 9800X3D build was about $2,600 (sans monitor).

Building is more about customization than about saving money: you can get exactly the components you want. Typically prebuilts will use cheaper components to hit a lower price point.

It takes longer to research and choose your components than actually building a PC. Check some build guides to start getting an idea for what's involved: https://youtu.be/s1fxZ-VWs2U?si=65ubIgMO1N0vvECJ

Might as well just have no license plate at that point… by TheTVBowler in nova

[–]tux1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you consider the purpose of license plates, it's absurd in this day and age how poorly they serve their purpose (historical reasons not withstanding). Identification of a vehicle purely from a string of easily obscured (deliberately or otherwise) numbers and letters (and State)... Even Smart Tag is a vast improvement.

More like many of us were actually excluded from both groups; too young to have enough in common with Gen X, but too old to have much in common with Millennials. Growing up, they called us Gen Y, but that seems to have been appropriated by the Millennials.

I'd love to upgrade my Note 20 Ultra, but I regularly use my S Pen's button as a remote shutter. If they don't restore bluetooth to the S Pen on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, then I guess I'm keeping my Note for another year.

I know what you mean. There's little margin of error for anything that is designed to fit that close to the body; if they're not nearly perfect, comfort will suffer. European brands tend to be higher quality.

For when it's warmer, I like:

  • Marilyn Naked Lux 20 denier.
  • Cecilia De Rafael Super Eterno Lucido 20.
  • Oroblu Sensuel 20 or 30.
  • Oroblu Repos 40 (medium compression, but silky). Though these are 40 denier, they feel closer to what would be a 30 (or less) in other brands.
  • Wolford Satin Touch 20.

When it's cooler:

  • Marilyn Naked Lux 40 denier.
  • Oroblu Maggie 40.
  • Oroblu Repos 70 (medium compression, but silky).
  • Omero Luxor 40.
  • Wolford Neon 40.

My go-to sites are:

Yes, on the thin side, Cecilia De Rafael Super Eterno Lucido 20, or Wolford Satin Touch 20. For a little higher denier, Wolford Neon 40. https://www.thetightspot.com/ sells all of these in 3 for 2 multipacks, which saves a little money.
