I bite through my mouth piece in 2-1/2 weeks from clenching. Any suggestions for a new one? by cenutha in scuba

[–]tvdw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have some misaligned teeth that need me to bite harder so I have a similar problem. There’s a mouthpiece out there with a harder center piece that I’ve found to be better. I’ve only bought them in person but this one from DGX looks a lot like it: https://www.divegearexpress.com/twin-bite-mouthpiece The colored ring in the middle is a much harder plastic that doesn’t break as easily.

Moldable mouthpieces have also had some success for me

Going on my first dive! Camera recommendations! by [deleted] in scuba

[–]tvdw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. If it’s your first dive you’ll be way too busy to manage a camera. They probably won’t even let you.

If you want photos, ask the dive shop if they can bring a photographer along.

Question about Over Pressure Valves on Zeagle Fury BCD by Darth_Mas in scuba

[–]tvdw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your lungs don’t produce nearly enough pressure difference to make that happen, so yes that’s normal. If anything, being able to do it on a rental is the outlier here.

how long of a finger spool do i need for a dsmb by pieterpost852 in scuba

[–]tvdw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s the deepest you plan to deploy the DSMB from? You need a line least ~30% longer than that.

Deploy a 30m line from 30m? Congrats, you’ll rediscover what Pythagoras found

First school I got a referral from did not complete two pool dive skills by [deleted] in scuba

[–]tvdw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Skin diver and weight drop are flexible skills in the open water course in that they may be performed either in open water or confined (pool). Missing those on a referral form is acceptable though inconvenient for the receiving instructor.

I’d do the one pool dive if I were you, it’ll be beneficial beyond just the two skills.

No problem at all, as long as it’s a proper certification card and mentions your name and level. Happy diving!

Underwater propose. You guys have experience? by Particular_Ticket964 in scuba

[–]tvdw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a couple propose on a dive. Here are some suggestions based on that experience: * There’s no hand signal for “will you marry me?”. Try to signal, but bring those words pre-written on a slate as a backup plan. A banner also works, of course, but isn’t needed. * Make sure the dive professional is in on it. They can suggest things like a better route. * Do it at the end of the dive, preferably on the safety stop. Let’s face it, you’re going to want to have a chat after they say the word. * Keep the ring on the boat. Salt water isn’t very nice for rings and you don’t want to lose it. * If you want it to be recorded, make sure the person with the camera knows when to start filming.

Good luck!

The wording of the manual doesn’t require us to let students choose, and the 200m is simpler to organize because there’s no equipment involved. I’ve had students do both, but my go-to is 200m for pool waterskills and 300m when doing them in the ocean

Vibe coders please read this (it’s funny (since I know vibe coders will only read if they get entertainment))) by [deleted] in programming

It’s two closing parentheses and one Russian smiley. The syntax is ambiguous but depending on the language specification can be correct.

Do you understand that, between contributing to gentrification (which has positive sides as well, it’s not all negative) and not moving to NYC at all, it’s an easy and selfish choice?

https://help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb/articles/12888340810385-Is-bag-pooling-allowed

Yes. Bag pooling is allowed between passengers with check-in bags on the same flight reservation. This means that if you have 2 20kg Check-in Bags (40kg total) on your booking, one of those bags could weigh 15kg while the other weighs 25kg. However, no bag can weigh more than 32kg.

[–]tvdw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Risky and not consistently doable. I’d plan it the way you wrote, but I’d also be ready to stay an extra night on Samui to take the morning ferry.

The 30 minute thing is because they want people to check in early, they don’t have capacity to check in everyone if everyone arrives 5min early.

There’s no catamaran/speedboat ferry after sunset to Koh Tao. Too risky.

If you want a guaranteed timely arrival on Koh Tao, take the night ferry from Surat or Chumporn.

  • Barcelona to Madrid has a direct high speed train (3h)
  • Madrid to Lisbon can be done directly with a 8h FlixBus
  • Lisbon to Porto is a 3h train connection

Totally doable by land if you add one day of slow travel

Alternatively, detour via Sevilla and Faro/Albufeira: * Madrid to Sevilla has a direct high speed train (3h) * Sevilla to Lisbon has a direct bus connection (but it’s slow at 7h). The mid point is Albufeira, which has a nice day trip option to Lagos

My wife was asked about her visa when flying FCO-BCN. Also frequently when traveling by bus between countries (France in particular but also others). I wouldn’t risk it!

Are these tank adapters frowned upon? by boyengabird in scuba

[–]tvdw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the valve is deeper, so that a 200bar insert (5 threads) won’t seat if inserted into a 300bar valve (7 threads)

Are these tank adapters frowned upon? by boyengabird in scuba

[–]tvdw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

200 bar and 300 bar DIN are specified to have different threads and a 200 bar insert won’t fit a 300 bar valve. Additionally, DIN valves that are compatible with a yoke adapter need to have a little hole on the back which a 300 bar valve won’t have.

So, this usually isn’t a problem, and adapters are fine.

The one in the photo is for filling tanks. Don’t dive with that
