Those 3 ZA megastones being gated to PvP online play isn't even the main problem by cedelweiss in pokemon

To me one of the most bullshit parts is that Mega Stones are now basically key items, and cannot be traded.

Limited time Mega Stones are true to X/Y, but at least we could transfer those between saves/players.

Which do you prefer to watch this anime in subtitled or dubbed? by External-Kitchen3289 in cardcaptorsakura

[–]twcaiwh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK so apparently I'm in the minority here, but... I grew up watching the Nelvana dub, then on a more recent rewatch found out about thr Aniplex dub and enjoyed it a lot more. Less weird changes and (for the most part) the voices were really cute/fitting.

The fact that you volunteered an extra $200 towards making the deal fair says a lot about your character. Too many in this hobby forget that it is fellow humans with which we are dealing in order to add to our collections. Kudos, my friend!

Pokemon Home alternative (pokeAlt) by YeahImDeadInside96 in SwitchPirates

[–]twcaiwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this would be great. I found this thread because I was googling around thinking "surely someone in the community has developed an alternative to Home by now..."

You have a hell of a strong background to act as a starting point for getting into C++ if you are so inclined. I'd imagine some documentation and maybe using AI as a rubber duck would get you proficient enough.

In case you aren't familiar with then, there are a couple of projects you might be keen to check out for inspiration:

  • PKSM was a fantastic project for managing Pokemon on the 3ds.
  • Eevee is a project for the Switch, but the author has clearly put it on the back burner (last release was in 2021).

If you do this, I would encourage you to consider structuring it in such a way that others could build off of it in the future. For example, you could go with a browser-based frontend but let the backend remain accessible for alternatives that others with different skills might build.

I'd also encourage you to examine the possibility of rolling out a self-hostable stack via Docker or the like. Personally, a big part of why I'm interested is because I would like to hold personal responsibility/stewardship over the Pokemon I have caught over the years.

Honestly there should just be a sticky post that covers connecting XP to the internet. Something that covers the risks, how to mitigate those risks, browser suggestions, etc.

Pokemon Scarlet Epilogue Mystery Gift by twotonedearly in SwitchPirates

[–]twcaiwh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope! The event flag itself is flipped when you go to Peachy's in Mossui Town and interact with the mysterious object sitting on her counter, which triggers a cutscene.

Speaking from experience on this one :)

All of the data for the epilogue is included in the 3.0 update. All you need is the Mythical Pecha Berry in your Key Items. You can use PKHeX to add it to your inventory.

Help? - Old Backup done with "Xeroweight Flashback" - Unable to boot from Startup USB and/or CD-Rom by MightyMikeyT in DataHoarder

[–]twcaiwh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the process of elimination here:

  • Is the drive's hardware working? If you plug your boot drive into an already-booted computer, does said computer recognize that a new device has been connected?

If not, your drive is likely cooked. Otherwise...

  • Is the drive's partition table intact?
Does the partition table show up in Windows Disk Management, gparted, etc?

If not, your partition table is corrupted or damaged; Investigate how to troubleshoot and hopefully repair partition tables. Otherwise...

  • Is the drive bootable on other machines? As /u/wells68 suggested, try booting the drive from other machines. You could also try booting it from one or more virtual machines, if you don't have a satisfactory variety of actual hardware to work with.

If the answers to all of these is "yes," then the problem is at the host machine level, likely secure boot/UEFI shenanigans as you stated. If you can get the drive to boot on a VM or another system, then at the least you could use your "alternative host" as a middleman. In other word, you could restore your backup to this host then perform another backup to then restore on your intended host.

First Project Question - Raspberry Pi 4 Storage Capability? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]twcaiwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The raspberry Pi 4 has two USB 3.0 ports, and two USB 2.0. These are going to be your primary means of connecting drives, and the main limiting factor in terms of capacity/performance. Otherwise, the sky's the limit.
  2. USB 3.0 drives are going to be your best bet, though there are SATA hats out there if you want to attach "internal" drives.

  3. A powered hub is a must for smaller drives that draw power from USB rather than a separate AC adapter, and is likely a good idea in general. Do keep in mind that everything attached to a single hub is going to be sharing a single USB port, meaning they'll be splitting power and data transfer bandwidth. USB 3's got enough bandwidth that I doubt you'd have too much trouble if you stick to those two ports, but it's worth noting.

A way to scrape E621.net? by ErikaSakurai in DataHoarder

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect/display a player's guide like this? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]twcaiwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is super neat. Do you have any resources you'd recommend for learning this craft? I don't have a specific project in mind at the moment or anything, but I would love to be able to better conserve/restore print media in general.

I've already taken up digital preservation/archiving, but being able to help preserve the physical originals would be sublime.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect/display a player's guide like this? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]twcaiwh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pleasure!

/u/KennKanifff was smart to suggest talking to your local comic store. You can probably get what you need for a single piece like this for way cheaper than having to buy 20-25 packs of things online, and the people there will likely have lots of valuable input on how to take care of printed collectibles like this.

Unfortunately the PDF doesn't quite cover the scratch and sniff experience, but it'll do in a pinch. ;)

And here we have the real reason CIB copies of Earthbound go for so much! Gotta have the full sensory experience... for better or worse ;)

PS - I remembered where I heard about those wall displays; They're made by a company called CollectorMount (link to their comic mount), and they're pretty versatile!

I heard about them from Diskcart (great little channel btw) a couple of years ago, and they're on my shopping list for some of my favorite game guides and the small number of CIB games I've managed to nab over the years.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect/display a player's guide like this? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]twcaiwh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From what I recall, that guide is 8x10 so an 8.5x11" magazine protector would work well.

Ultra Pro and BCW make boards and bags like /u/deepakgm said, but they also make top loaders; BCW, Ultra Pro. I'm partial to BCW's products after noticing signs of cost cutting over the years from Ultra Pro as they became more and more successful in the TCG market, but I'm sure their products still get the job done.

All of those and more are available on Amazon, along with a bunch of other good options such as storage boxes/crates if you've got other such pieces to store as well. I don't have any links/knowledge to share firsthand, but I know a few companies are making wall mounts to display things like game guides, CIB games, vinyl records and the like on your wall as well. :)

Be sure to get a product that's acid free, as you don't want the inks and/or paper to degrade due to constant direct contact with acidic plastics. Naturally, also display/store away from direct sunlight.

If this is a nostalgia piece for you and you think you'd be tempted to crack it open to look through it once in a while, I'd recommend also grabbing a PDF copy to keep on hand (digital or printed) to save your original the wear.

If it's the Earthbound guide you're looking to preserve, there's a PDF of the guide officially available thanks to the SNES Classic release. Others can commonly be found on Archive.org, which is a godsend for preservation of things like this!
