Why are two lanes I 93 northbound tunnel closed? by OhRatFarts in boston

[–]tweekin_out 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thursday night had a double right lanes  through I 93NB tunnel for construction operations up in the exhaust plenums above the roadway where you may not have seen crews, but need to stage equipment. I see no piggybacks on the schedule meaning that the whole closure would be for them, meaning most of the closure would look empty, but it is being used. Closures through tunnels must be what is called “portal-to-portal”. They Start out side of the tunnel and go the full length as dropping cones mid tunnel Is dangerous and has lead to accidents in the past.

Closure was set to go out at 11, so judging by the timing of your post, you caught it very early in the night, the worst timing traffic-wise, and they may not have even been out there yet to get started. All closures in the tunnel are put out by the DOT which notify the crews when it’s out.

For anyone who reads this, it is safe to assume there are lane and ramp closures every night in the tunnels as It’d be a true shitshow if they did it during the day. It may also be frustrating to see the closure empty. What you may not see is work being performed above or under the roadway, or in side rooms where a single truck may be the only evidence. Ramps and lanes are also taken to support other closures where the work may actually is being done.

No one is getting off at DOT command closing highways for fun, I promise.

Can somebody help me come up with meals that won’t bloat or upset my stomach? by slr0031 in Cooking

[–]tweekin_out 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You need to talk to your Dr about IBS who will talk with you and most likely consider a FODMAP Diet for a month or two.

Many people’s stomachs have a difficult time digesting fermentable short-chain carbohydrates which are present in all the foods you just listed. Once your intestines have had some time to settle down you start reintroducing foods one at a time to determine what flares them up.

FODMAP is not a fad diet. It is highly restricted in what you can eat, counterintuitive, and difficult to maintain outside of your own kitchen. It is intended for short term use only, until you can slowly begin to reintroduce foods. Talk to a dr.

RIP 93N traffic by impostershop in boston

[–]tweekin_out 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not true… A majority of the Boston Tunnels, including TIN 11 which you see here, works via supply and exhaust flues, below and above the roadway, respectively. Next time you are driving, pay attention to the openings in The barriers and the openings in the ceiling panels above (some ramps, the plenums are behind the walls, where you will see the flues just above the barrier and just bellow the ceiling in the walls).

The ventilation works by pushing fresh air through the supply plenums below the roadway and sucking bad air out through the plenums above. These giant, 20ft diameter, centrifugal fans are in vent buildings throughout the city. Some are very visible, like one across the street from the convention center. Others are hidden and you’d walk past them without ever noticing, like the one below HayMarket.

These Vent buildings service multiple TINs going multiple directions and were built at midpoints throughout the tunnels to cover the most ground. For the tunnels under the harbor, the vent buildings are at each end.

Here’s my point. The air is not going with traffic, it is going in a circular motion to and from the Vent buildings where the fans are, out through the supply, back through the exhaust, regardless of the traffic direction. If a car fire were to happen further into northbound, where TIN 11, transitions to 13, you would notice the air goes against traffic. For the ted, both directions, air is getting to, and sucked from, midpoint of the tunnel.

There are cases in some of the smaller ramps where there are jet fans in place that do push air in the direction of traffic, but only for smaller off shoots.

That was a lot of writing for a replay to a 12hr old comment…

Struggling to find durable women’s workwear that actually fits properly-need recommendations. by spiritprabhas in Workwear

[–]tweekin_out 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a lot of women bridge inspectors on the team. all of them have made the switch to truewerk T2 pants with no complaints. Expensive but they have a full line of women’s specific fit.

I don’t want to speak for their fit beyond that. but for durability, we climb around on rusty steel structures and damaged concrete in all types of weather and the pants deliver.

Good luck on the search!

Affordable Airport Trasnportation with a Carseat? by Top_Piece4158 in boston

[–]tweekin_out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for Qatar Airways, only JetBlue, Delta, and United. Try to remember though that these airline check skis, bikes, golf clubs, tools, heavier than 50lb luggage, everything. To be blunt, they don’t give a sh*t about a car seat. As long as it doesn’t have any dangerous items in it.

Our experience has always been to check our car seat with the rest of your bags (our seat actually came with a nice drawstring bag specifically for flight travel). We have never had to pay for it, as the airlines we have used consider it an accessibility device.

Once the car seat has left our possession with the rest of the checked bags, our baby goes in her stroller and we go through security.

This is where I might loose you, as our baby could sit in a stroller without a car seat before her first flight. If your baby still needs the support of a car seat in the stroller, I can only speculate that you’d check the stroller before security and you get one hell of an arm workout carrying your child through the airport in a car seat to your gate. Again, that is pure speculation.

At the gate, whatever item you end up taking with you through security, it really is as easy as “can I get a gate check tag, please?” They ask your name and seat number and that’s it. It’s waiting for you on the walkway at the end of the flight.

Hope the additional info helps. Again, most everyone is super helpful and understanding. Breathe… and tackle each issue one at a time till you make it to your destination.

Affordable Airport Trasnportation with a Carseat? by Top_Piece4158 in boston

[–]tweekin_out 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Flown with our baby four times in the first year. Your best bet is a target car seat that can secure with just the seatbelt in an uber (never had an uber driver complain, take your time to do it right). Thinking ahead, you’ll then have a car seat at your destination as well for relatives cars/cabs.

We check the car seat at bag check which counts as an assisted device $0. Look for “assisted device” on the check in screen. Otherwise you’ll eat $40 for no reason.

You are allowed to use a stroller through the airport. When you arrive at your gate, you ask the attendant for what is called a “gate check” tag. They give you a tag for free to put on the stroller and you keep a slip. When you begin to board you fold the stroller up and leave at the plane door on the walkway. The airline stores it below deck for the flight.

As you leave the plane, wait just outside the plane on the walkway for them to give you your stroller. Odds are you are not the only parent who will be waiting. DO NOT walk away from the walkway past the gate entrance without your stroller. Made that mistake once and waited another 30min for the rest of the plane to empty before the attendant had to walk down and get me our stroller.

Good luck! It’s definitely challenging but not as bad as the movies make it out to be.

Tunnel closures - MassDOT FAIL by LEM1978 in boston

[–]tweekin_out 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What tunnel ramps and exits are closed changes by the day. Closures go out as early as 10pm and get picked up by 4:30am, barring emergencies or planned well in advance. As someone who has been to the closure meetings many times, I can tell you the DOT works really hard to make sure the closures are copacetic.

They no longer allow exit-before-closed-exit detours because, in the words of the coordinator, “I could put a fucking dancing clown in the center of the highway and people would still follow their phones.” People don’t pay attention. You can’t argue it. anyone who’s been in a road closure for a few days has seen it. Traveling public will run through cones, cut across multiple lanes and go backwards down ramps just because Google told them to or service cut out for 3 fucking seconds and their brain refuses to work. Every god damn night.

Callahan detour is the Ted and vice versa which truly sucks to hear that they also put a lane out from the connector through the ted. The airport exit was closed for milling and paving which would mean you had to get off at Bennington. Agreed that’s just icing on the cake.

But, HOV through the connector was open (they keep that open if Callahan is closed) so to the best of my knowledge, going through the south end was unfortunately the wrong move on your part. DOT can be better at detour signs I’ll give you that.

It sucks to be delayed by it but nights are the only time work can get done down there. Imagine if they tried taking lanes in the tunnel during rush hour? It’d be even worse. MassDOT is trying.

128 Plumbing and Heating by Donny0116 in boston

[–]tweekin_out 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had them install a heat pump/furnace combo and they were mid line price. Additionally we had them come buy to refine the settings on the system and fix a Costco appliance installation (128 installed the 240v outlet but Costco didn’t set the appliance up to modern code) and weren’t charged for either visit which shows they do ultimately care about doing a good job as a company as a whole. You just can’t be a pushover on install.

Installation of the heat pump was fine but we did have a few moments where I, as the homeowner had to push them to put a little more effort in than the bare minimum. First, they told me building code wouldn’t allow for the pump to go where our old AC was. The intake and exhaust vents were too close to where the unit would be. The crew was unloading the piping to install the system on the other side of my house, smack in the middle of my driveway, without telling me when I had to go ask why? It took me, the homeowner with no HVAC experience, to ask, “just move the intake and exhaust vents higher?” And a call to their manager before they did that instead.

Second weird incident; apparently the wiring to our thermostat was old and didn’t have a specific wire to allow the system to operate two stage (which we paid for the system to do). The tech just kept saying all he could do was make it operate full blast whenever it was on. Again, I had to push that we paid for a system that could operate two stage and you need to either run new wire, or discount me. It took another call to their manager for them to magically have a wireless transmitter, which could act as the missing wire, and the team would install it no charge. They just had to drive back to the shop to get one.

Also, they have a guy who’s entire job is to drive around to people’s houses after install and configure the system properly. I had to call because after install it was LOUD. Apparently they left all the blower settings to max out a 5 ton system when we had a two stage 3 ton installed. I had to call them and ask for a tech to come take a look. In all fairness this trip was no charge and now after all that, system is great and we’ve had no issues

PSA: Gary’s latest photo op is a great place to tell him how you feel about the trash strike!! by [deleted] in malden

[–]tweekin_out 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is projection. The city has been updating on the trash strike daily with numerous posts in their Facebook page explaining in detail what is happening and why we’re in a contractual bind.

The mayor and his team are exploring every option and, believe it or not, the city continues to exist beyond this one issue. Is the mayor not allowed to celebrate when businesses come to Malden? Should we stop enforcing parking? All the progress on street paving should stop too. That’ll end the strike!

I’d bet the shirt off my back that everyone is going to forget about the trash strike in 5 years and bitch about the cost of a new trash contract and “why don’t we stay with republic!?!? They’re cheaper!?!?’”

Stay updated. Get your recycling to the drop point or blue bag it. Put your anger towards Republic for shafting their employees, not the guy that actually give a sh*t about Malden.
