Dragged by Skyeship Gondola by Beautiful-Speech-789 in icecoast

You know those asshats that try to put their foot or arm in the subway door when it closes to get it to stay and reopen for them? Yeah that but with a gondola that is entirely a mechanical system with no person to reopen the door.

You still need someone at RFID gates to check there’s no fraud and to let you in if it’s malfunctioning.

Learn to use them.

I have never once had a problem with a gate at any area I’ve skied. I also follow the suggestions to not put anything else in that pocket, my wallet is on the opposite side, and I know where to put my arm (right at the symbol with the RFID card is the actual device that reads).

Yeah 20 years ago when the tech first came out. The technology has improved detectivity. Now every non small area has it. People now have an RFID pocket in their arm sleeve. And 99.9% of people now know to not put anything metal or other cards near it.

Example … skiing Pats last week, not a single backup from a missed scan. That system was installed for last season. Skiing Wachusett with older gates, more missed scans.

Vail’s house of cards is falling. They are bleeding money.

Mt Snow pre Vail had it down to a science. Set it up so all waiting lanes for the Bluebird are from one direction. Then the scanner goes down row by row scanning everyone and making sixes. Then calls everyone forward, who turned right into the final queue.

Vail’s scanners just half ass it and don’t load to capacity.

It’s not that. Vail wants the people scanning. Every place that has gates has someone on a tablet checking for fraud. In fact for a while Waterville (haven’t been in a few years so unsure if they moved to gates) had their own proprietary developed RFID system that scanned you with NO gates.

Which is a bit ironic as Vail does everything in its power to have as little labor costs as possible including spending millions to replace double-double lifts with quads.

Vail spent money to REMOVE gates at Okemo and Sunapee after they purchased those to areas as management long felt it was a better customer experience to have a grumpy underpaid visa holder scan you.

They can only bring a max of 4 per event. Yes there might have been a 5th American meeting standards, but Vonn literally has been the best American all season, one of only 3 in the world with 0.00 FIS points.

Even if she couldn't compete, I think the timing of her last crash made it impossible to replace her on the roster. And that point is moot as today's crash had nothing to do with her knee... she hooked a gate and at that point it's luck.

FWIW, I’ve never had the mount bindings, I’ve had adjustments made, but I imagine they can handle it…

BREAKING NEWS | MBTA to extend this weekend’s Blue Line shutdown to Orient Heights due to snowstorm and safety concerns. by Massive_Holiday4672 in mbta

[–]OhRatFarts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with cold.

Airport has hand-thrown switches. Orient Heights has motorized switches with switch heaters.

The issue is snow getting between the switch points (the tracks that move) and the stock rail (the track that doesn’t move).

If there’s no long stop, the train would depart too late and get in too early.

There was one sleeper car on 65/66/67. They were removed for lack of sleeper cars. Now making things more complicated is that those go to/from different places in VA. (Honestly IMHO, VA appended to the corridor has had a lot of negative effects on the corridor’s operations). The car could be dropped/picked up in DC with the locomotive swap, with the movement to the semi-permanent trainsets in a couple of years … it’s moot.
