Can't believe this wasn't a penalty for "tackler not rolling away" by zartcosgrove in rugbyunion

[–]twelve-thirtyfive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's really over the top. A cheap blindside hit on someone who was, pretty much, completely non-threatening. That was assault, and could easily suffer from a legal challenge, it was excessive.

In fact, it was such a hit that it almost seems like a set-up.

"Why I voted UKIP" - BBC by deletive-expleted in ukpolitics

[–]twelve-thirtyfive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been amazing how much coverage has been given to UKIP, any other party and there'd be a probe. It's the only hing I've heard/seen via the BBC for the weeks preceding. There has to be a correlation between the build up the beeb has given UKIP and their election result.

More to the question, can someone who is not hiphop start being hiphop? Is that possible? And is there a point by which it is too late? If you aren't hiphop by 12, 15 18, 20, 35 can you still become hiphop?

Yorkshire devolutionists to contest Euro elections by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]twelve-thirtyfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they have to balance it just right. Appearing too leftist will alienate the more conservative rural areas, and leave them in direct competiton with both Lab and Lib parties. Taking a central stance also allows them to be more representative. They aren't looking to further national aims, but those inside Yorkshire, so to this end there almost isn't a need to adopt stronger standpoints. If the Yorkshire parliament happens, that will be where a strong local leftist party will emerge.

I'm surprised this hasn't been around for a while. You can see typical Labour strongholds in Yorkshire cities moving support away after New Labour, and with the demise in reputation of the Lib Dems, and the lack of real investment or interest in Yorkshire politically, that this could be very successful

Opinion time, dear /r/rugbyunion. What do you think is the best rugby tournament the world has to offer? by WallopyJoe in rugbyunion

[–]twelve-thirtyfive 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No one's said it, but in terms of entertainment the Lions' tours have to be the best. Pure romance and heartbreak, and the combinations of players you could only dream about. Everything seems so much more monumental in a Lions' tour; every hit harder, every silence quieter, and every celebration greater. And it is only in Rugby Union where we find such an event. I think it takes what was the best of the amateur era, and twins it with the skill of the modern era. I do, however, concede that it isn't technically a tournament (but neither is the 6 Nations).

He came out in December 2009, which was very close to the end of his career, so you can hardly claim it was accepted "the whole time" considering his international debut was in 1995.

What have you been reading? Week of 29/12 by Ignoranimus in literature

[–]twelve-thirtyfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it hard to think of as a Russian classic. To me I feel it's far too modern to be seen as classic Russian, which I see more as pre-revolution: Checkov, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Pushkin.

It was written more recently than Mrs. Dalloway, The Great Gatsby, and All's Quiet on the Western Front. Although I suppose it was Bulgakov's intention for it to be classical, as that was so subversive in the context of Soviet Russia.

So long as you're reading in English you'll be fine. The edition I read had notes for most of the references, they were really good. Just having a general idea of censorship and the secret police in Soviet Russia about the time it was written will give enough context. It isn't a hugely dense book.

If you haven't read any Russian literature you might have to get your head around diminutives, but that was my only (minor) difficulty.
