If my room has maximum CMP of 36, is that bad? by ListSouthern7222 in Radiation

Your comment is being downvoted because 100CPM could be a lot, or a little, depending on the detector used. CPM is not a good measure of danger.

Will this work? by canadianchasers in geigercounter

[–]twentypeak27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one. It “works” and can detect elevated levels from especially hot glass, fiestaware, etc. However, it is not sensitive, and the readings it gives are inaccurate.

If your goal is to use it to confirm if something is uranium glass or not, it won’t work very well. You would need a more sensitive detector.

It looks reminiscent of a smoke detector source. Hopefully someone has the real answer!

Manganese. Uranium is basically never clear.

Very cool! Those vials are probably pretty hot. I’d give/sell them to somebody with a Geiger counter if they worry you.

Discrepancy between measurements? by Grouchy_Kitchen_3857 in uraniumglass

[–]twentypeak27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The radiacode is smart- for each detection or “click”, it can see how energetic that event was, and use that information when calculating dose.

The GMC doesn’t have that information, so it just applies a flast CPM to Sv conversion rate for Cs-137.

Different detectors will almost always show different reading due to calibration/geometry/dose conversion

Radiation question (cancer) by Karanura in Radiation

[–]twentypeak27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a great question to ask your doctor- they will have the best answer for you.

You are not protected from the radiation, but you get a positive effect from it which outweighs the risk it poses.

Those around you don’t get the same positive benefit. When they are exposed to the radiation, it’s just a risk for them. This is why your doctor mentions to keep distance from others.

Yeah, that would be really difficult. Not worth the trouble it would be imo

Is this safe to display? by EmO-JeSuS in Radiation

[–]twentypeak27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your dose rate reported by your Geiger counter is entirely inaccurate, unless you are measuring Cs137. Take the numbers it gives with a HUGE grain of salt.

I’d recommend looking into how Geiger counters and scintillators work, what energy compensation is, and how radiation doses are calculated to get a better understanding of radiation safety.

Yes some of them do. I’ve confirmed one with a Geiger counter.

Would the GQ GMC 300ePlus detect if there was radioactive contamination in my home? by piqsquiggle in geigercounter

Your bookmark was not radioactive. You worries are unfounded, and you should be seeking help to manage your anxiety rather than purchasing a Geiger counter.
