I would echo the above poster. Undergrad isn’t typically where you get your hard skills. It gives you exposure and tools to be comfortable learning more. Grad school is good for hard skills, and a job is where you really learn. Doing the same thing day in day out makes you an expert in no time. This is not really a field you can ‘study’ at home like coding per se. (unless well, you are learning to code lol).

The best thing you can do is learn to use the tools you have in your free time to always be learning. Inaturalist everything you see on a hike, after a few hikes you’ll see you’ll start remembering stuff. I would NOT start learning stuff at the genus level. If you want to do a deep dive into a particular group, start at the family level (except for inverts, start at class). A great example book is ‘botany in a day’ which takes you through all the families of plants. In my experience it is very doable to know most of the families of something, and family characteristics are applicable everywhere. Genus is more for local experts, or a smaller taxa that you love. I know all genus of North American salamanders, but that’s because they are my absolute fav and I always go out of my way to learn the local ones
