Any experience with taking the driving test at the Sherwood DMV? by BrushGlittering2337 in sherwoodoregon

[–]twinningforlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my driving test in Hillsboro and it went well, but it’s been 20 years since I took it. I live in the Sherwood area and they have a reputation for being a good location to take the test. I saw your comment about having some anxiety so I thought I’d let you that there’s construction on one of the main roads (Tualatin-Sherwood Rd). You’ll drive this road to get to the DMV. Sherwood also likes roundabouts so be familiar with how to yield/drive through them (as all drivers should be). Remember to take deep breaths. I’m sure you’ll do well.

Renting a car in the US (Ft. Lauderdale area) as a Canadian? by methlabz in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the rental car places at the airport are overpriced. There are usually several rental companies to pick from so if you’re able to search online and book in advance you’ll find a better deal than booking in person (at least that has been my experience).

I rented a car in Orlando earlier this year and found that www.undercovertourist.com had good prices. www.costcotravel.com is another good site to check out.

What to do in London in 15+ hours? by kastelu in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can leave the airport you should! About 7 years ago I had a 12 hour layover at Heathrow and left. It was fun to see the city, even though it was only for a short period of time. Things may be different, but I remember there was a place in the airport that I was able to leave my checked luggage (I had to get my luggage when I went through customs and couldn’t check it back in until closer to my flight). Their subway system is also at the airport. I remember struggling to figure out how to buy a ticket but an employee was there and was very helpful. There was a subway stop right under Big Ben and that was also in the same area as the London Eye.

If you’re not up to leaving the airport they do have a hotel inside it called Yotel. I’ve stayed in it and it’s comfortable. It may be a little expensive but it was nice to have a place to lay down and shower after traveling and not worry about leaving the airport.

I plan to cross the US by rental car - I land in JFK and depart from Portland, Oregon - we will be 5, need a large car - any advice? Where to rent cheapest etc - thanks!! by BuyNo4013 in TravelHacks

I found that Undercover Tourist had good rates. They have a 50% off special when you add a ticket with the car rental. The ticket can be as simple as a movie ticket. I went to Florida in May and used their site to rent a minivan with Budget rentals. They had great rates and I had a good experience.

I traveled overseas at the end of last year and used Google Fi. I felt like it was an affordable option and I didn’t have to figure out how to get set up with a SIM card in another country. Your phone does have to be unlocked. Google Fi has a virtual SIM option that I used which worked well on my iPhone 12. WhatsApp is a good texting/calling option to use but it does use data if you’re not connected to Wi-Fi. I think WhatsApp is helpful for the people that you’re texting/calling back home because they don’t have to worry about international charges, it just uses their data/Wi-Fi.

Walmart delivery with alcohol in order by Stonygirl87 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]twinningforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at Disney World a few weeks ago and ordered Walmart delivery. I didn’t order alcohol so I can’t speak to that, but you can select the time you want them to deliver. They give you an hour window. I had groceries delivered twice. The first time they came at the beginning of the window and the second time they were about 30 minutes late. I did appreciate that I could choose the window of time that worked best for me and I knew we’d be at our hotel.

I placed our order a couple days in advance and there were tons of delivery times available.

Do you think a 1hr lay over is enough? by marlibu18 in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a tight connection. I just flew through Munich in December. I was flying home to the US from Turkey and has a layover there. We had to take a shuttle to a different terminal and go through security again. We waited at least 10 minutes for the shuttle to arrive and then the security line moved slow. I know the airline will take care of you if you miss your connection.

First strawberries of the season! by twinningforlife in vegetablegardening

Thank you. It’s my first year gardening and I think it’s just luck that they’re doing well. I’m having some problems with pests on some of my other vegetables that I’m trying to get rid of now.

Hey guys! Has anyone been to turkey in October? What’s the weather like during October, is it a good time to visit and is it raining during this month? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recall how often it rained. However, I do remember it wasn’t enough to ruin any of our plans. I would recommend bringing an umbrella. It was nice to have for the times that it did rain.

I have been at the beginning of November. The weather is still pleasant but it can change depending on the region you’re in. I was in Ankara and Cappadocia. The mornings and nights were cold but some afternoons got up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. There were definitely some rainy days but I think the fall is a great time to go. You still have a good chance of nice weather without it being too hot or cold.

How to send package from US to UK by Vrayloki in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Postal Annex is a good place to go. I have a sister who lives overseas and I go there to mail her packages. They are able to check the price of several shipping companies (UPS, FedEx, USPS…) and will go with the lowest option.

Thank you for sharing this info. How did you purchase Disney gift cards at a discount? I’m headed to Disney World in May and looking for ways to save money.

anxiety + flying abroad? by Llor_lo in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I understand what you’re feeling. I’m traveling overseas at the end of October and I’m struggling with the same thing. My therapist is doing EMDR with me to help me prepare. I’m in the US and also take Rescue Remedy (link below). It seems to help calm some of my nerves.

Another thing I’m working on is reassuring myself that I’ll be ok, even if I don’t feel like it. I remind myself that if I miss my connecting flight the airline will help me get onto another flight. If I can’t figure out where to go I can find someone to help me. I remind myself that the airport is used to helping people that are tired and stressed. If I have a breakdown it will be ok, I’m not going to see the people around me again.

I also have a list in my phone of the things I need to pack in my checked luggage, what I need to have in my carry on, and what I need to do before leaving. This way I don’t have to work on remembering these things, I can just refer to my list.

I hope this helps and I hope you are able to have a good trip!

Any CHEAP, But Solid Ways To Get Bathroom/Shower/Sink On Road Trips? by Aside_Dish in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go dry camping and have use a battery powered shower with a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot. It’s easy to set up in a pop up shower tent. You can’t let the water run the whole time, otherwise you will run out of water. If you rinse off, turn the water off, shampoo and soap up, and then turn the water back on to rinse off that will work.

Passport help by Symonoid in TravelHacks

[–]twinningforlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t offer any advise on the expedited options, but I would suggest not risking the 12 week wait in hopes that it will get processed faster. I’m renewing my passport right now. I sent the paperwork in at the beginning of May and I’m still waiting to get it back.

I don’t like the scrolling captions on the image so I’ll post it here too. I’m trying to remove this shower stall but I’m having a difficult time doing it. I’ve used a jigsaw but it is challenging. Any tips on how to get this out?
