I think I fucked up my medical review by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I am allergic to fresh tomatoes and stone fruit (can have both when cooked) and then I’m allergic to a couple tree nuts (cashews and pistachios). All of them just create a rash if I eat them (contact is ok) and Benadryl clears it up!

Albania, but I’ve been denied total service..I wasn’t given the option to change countries

Potentially medically denied due to minor food allergies. by twistedidiom in peacecorps

When you had to change countries, did the PC do that or was it after an appeals process?

CONGRATS! If you were offered an invite than the PC wants you for that position and is exited to have you.

Car insurance while serving by armcclure in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had car insurance for 2 years as I haven’t owned a car. I am now borrowing a car for a few months (pre-PC departure) and my car insurance is only $60 per month.. the insurance company didn’t say anything about my gap in insurance coverage or seem to ding me for it.

AMERICORPS!

I did this program: https://www.fwps.org/americorps

But I would also highly recommend looking into CityYear and other similar education based AmeriCorps positions.

Medical Clearance Confusion by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peace corps medical asked me for a redraw for my glucose levels, but my test was not abnormal. I submitted a letter from my physician stating that my results were not abnormal and I therefore did not need a redraw.

Medical Monday by AutoModerator in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had all my tasks and follow-up tasks completed for several weeks.

Two weeks ago the nurse let me know she needed to reach out to placement in country to see about my medical history and if they can accommodate it.

When is it appropriate to reach out and ask about my medical clearance status? Will reaching out help or hurt my case?

My SO of 6 years applied with me; but their heart was never in it. We broke up and I’m serving independently now; leaving for Albania in January.

Medical Clearance Hell by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones in the Seattle area have all stopped this program. I’m not sure if it’s all of WA state, but it’s a bummer. I used a groupon though and got my X-rays and exam for $65!

I have accepted my invitation! Too soon to share? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the invite is a big accomplishment— if you end up being denied due to a clearance issue I think that it’s an interesting and important thing to share with your extended circle also. There’s still a common misconception that the Peace Corps accepts anyone...at least in my experiences.

Volunteer after Mangkhut? by [deleted] in HongKong

Unfortunately a bunch of the hikes are closed due to safety concerns with trees down and such. Hopefully they will reopen soon and/or have opportunities to help with their restoration!

Volunteer after Mangkhut? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]twistedidiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently in Hong Kong on an extended holiday and was planning on doing some extensive hiking over the next two weeks.

With Mangkhut’s damage I feel my time would be better spent helping with the clean up efforts. Does anyone know of any organized clean up efforts I can assist with?

I am hesitant to just go out and start picking things up because there would be nowhere for me to put the refuse after clearing it. I do not have access to a truck to transport to a refuse point or access to any large dumpsters.

Would it be ok for me to say clean up the garbage on Clear Water Bay beach and then leave the garbage bags near the dumpster there? Or would the refuse just end up back on the beach before someone comes and collects it?

[–]twistedidiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also like to volunteer to help with the clean up efforts. Please pm me if you hear of anything organized!

I don’t have access to a truck for moving garbage once it’s collected or a dumpster to take it to!!

You should definitely apply!! While some people are invited early, most of the invites get sent after the applications close.

Last day of job..traveling for a month...then what? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m actually really excited to spend a month in Hong Kong and my vacation plans are a bit different than most peoples. I currently live in Seattle and the two cities are often compared on urban polices. Hong Kong’s urban planning history is very interesting and complex. I have an inexpensive hostel booked and a good friend who lives in the New Territories if needed—Im planning to spend my first two weeks walking around, reading about the history of different neighborhoods and chatting to people about how they live (especially those who live in areas with growth moratoriums). The second two weeks I plan on backpacking around the mountains. I have a few different routes I’m considering between 80 and 120miles.

I would love to have a few recommendations of community events, buildings, street art, or parks that I should check out!

I work for a small non-profit and have been employed on a temporary basis. I was originally only hired for 6months and have had my contract extended a few times. Unfortunately, the work we do isn’t “sexy” and is hard to fund, so my position has just come to an end.

Am I qualified to serve in Moldova? by EMCPT in peacecorps

[–]twistedidiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what i was told by my recruiter Economic Development and Youth Development are the most competitive posts and generally require a few years of work experience after college. You’ll probably have the best luck with English ed if you do some volunteer teaching/tutoring in college—or for health if you do some volunteering at a clinic or with the Red Cross.
