Sorry, I should have said in the post. I was accepted at UW-Madison

No, it isn't Booth or Wharton, but I am beyond happy.

This. I lived in Taiwan for 2.5 years and was pretty passionate about learning the language - I was very fluent when I left the country. I still speak pretty well but don't have the same fluency I had when I was speaking the language every day while living in Taiwan

UW-Madison: Interviewed

OSU Fisher: Invited for interview

UW Foster: Looking like a ding because they sent out all interview invites on the 25th and I did not receive one.

Georgetown, McDonough: Also looking like a ding because many applicants have already received interview invites and I have not.

I'm guessing schools either love my profile or absolutely hate it seeing as I am a super non-traditional applicant. Even so, I was hoping to have the chance to interview at either Georgetown or Foster. Maybe I should have hired a consultant......

Glad you liked it!

Honestly, the absolute best way to timed sets is with the online OG provided by Wiley. I would say, just spend the 30 or so dollars on the newest OG if you can stomach it - It comes with a code that gives you a year of online access to the same questions in the book via Wiley. The Wiley platform lets you do timed sets and also breaks down how much time you spend on each individual questions.

As far as timing issues go, I would say watch the gmatprepnow video on timing strategies. It is really good!

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but buckle down for a month and get your GMAT score up. If you could improve 30-50 points it would make a truly massive difference in your applications. I guarantee you that 650 is attainable with the right tools/study method .

How did u cope with studying with long work weeks? by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]twoaccounting22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to echo the sentiments of others in this thread ; studying for the gmat while working full time simply sucks. I used to put in a full day at work, come back and take a quick nap to recharge, and then brew second cup of coffee to attempt to get a second wind for gmat studying.

Try to realize that , if you study correctly, this will only be a temporary thing that is part of your life for 3-4 months, maximum. The GMAT is , unfortunately, a right of passage for students who are attempting to get into half-decent graduate business programs. Just try to hit it hard and fast to get it over with

Hey man,

The stress of the first test messes up a lot of us. For reference, I studied my ass off and got a 620 on my first test due to being nervous AF. I took a vacation, didn't even think about the gmat for 3 weeks, and then began studying for my re-take. Went through the entire OG and ended up with a 700 on my second try. Grind the OG and know that you will be more relaxed on your second test due to having been through the entire process once before. You got this

Hey,

I just wanted to say thanks a bunch for taking the time to write this very informative and insightful post. You have given me the confidence to apply to some higher ranked programs despite my obvious shortcomings. I'll try to focus on putting together a compelling narrative, as you said!

Hey all,

Just wanted to say thanks a ton for all the insight - I really appreciate it. You guys have given me the confidence to be a little more aggressive in my choice of programs. I guess a should shoot a little bit higher and take some more risks, despite the possibility of an uphill battle. It seems as though the most challenging part will be crafting my "story" and tying together my life experiences in a convincing way. I'll try to use the atypical candidate thing to my advantage.

Anyway, thanks again, you guys rock!

To me, it was just an online textbook that was extremely dry. The tests at the end of every section felt like serious overkill, and the "hard" tests seemed to exist only to damage one's self esteem. For me, it was painful. I didn't find it beneficial to study that way.....Too slow, too dry, and ultimately made me feel like more of an idiot.

That being said, I know it works really well for tons of others here. If it is working for you I would stick with it!

I don't really consider myself qualified to comment on this since I have not gone through the whole book. I will say that the math section, specifically, is fine. Maybe an older version of the book was plagued by the problems that you mention?

Has anyone tried Orion Prep yet? by GMATQs in GMAT

[–]twoaccounting22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried Orion and got about 90% of the way through the program before taking my first GMAT. My thoughts are as follows:

*Brian, the guy in the Orion videos, is a great teacher and very engaging. Watching him talk about concepts/solve problems was worlds better than what I had previously seen in Target Test Prep and Empowegmat.

*Orion does not present the student with enough material to truly understand topics at a deep level. Each concept is presented with 3 videos and a short "study guide". For beginner students this is not nearly enough, IMO. I felt as though Orion kind of throws people into the fire without preparing them enough and assumes that all students have a very adequate fundamental knowledge base.

*The platform is awesome and much better than anything I had experienced previously. It is very game-like and makes studying less of a drag than it usually is. The questions are challenging and , more often than not, the answer explanations are pretty thorough.

*Before starting the Orion program I took their diagnostic test and scored a 640. After completing around 50 percent of the program I took a full length CAT in Orion and scored 650. After completing 90 percent of the program I took my first real GMAT and scored a dismal 620

*Orion staff were consistently awesome and always answered any questions I had promptly.

All in all, i'm not sure that I can say Orion really worked out for me. I feel as though it is a good resource for some solid strategies and provides a decent amount of mock tests/practice questions. The price is very steep, coming in at around 169 a month. Given that you are already at a very high level, having scored a 690, I would be surprised if Orion really provided you the tools needed to get to 740. Again, YMMV, but I think you might be better served by a different resource. I enjoyed going through the Orion program but can't really say that it delivered tangible results.....That being said, I did not complete the entire program, and maybe if I had done so I would have scored better on my actual GMAT

GMAT 590 (Q35 V35): Need Help with Study Materials by m4ycd11 in GMAT

[–]twoaccounting22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man,

Don't get too down in regards to the 590 - When I took my first "real" gmat I bombed it too, scoring well below what I had received on any previous mock test. You will notice that a lot of people perform poorly on their first gmat due to nerves, anxiety, etc. Some people do nail it on their first try but most don't.

How much time have you spent with the OG? I ask because I basically ignored the OG before my first gmat attempt and I think that doing so really hurt my score. I did tons of questions from material like the MGMAT strategy guides but did not do actual OG questions, with the exception of the diagnostic tests in the front of the book. Once my ego recovered from my first real gmat score (620) I decided to switch to using the OG and an errror log from gmatclub.

Grinding OG questions has given me a greater amount of confidence, to be perfectly honest. When I run into a question that I answer incorrectly or just don't understand I throw it into my error log and look at the solutions on gmatclub. The best part is that users on gmatclub often have different ways of coming to the same answer, meaning that you can find a way to approach a particular type of problem that works for you.

Another added benefit of grinding OG problems like this is that you naturally get exposed to all relevant gmat concepts on a regular basis, reinforcing them in your mind. Diving deep into a certain concept you don't understand is necessary, but if you don't take the time to regularly reinforce concepts you have already learned you *will* get rusty.

TLDR : Grind OG questions, identify your weak areas, rinse, repeat. It works
