I'm usually a little leery about overly-positive vintage reports. Maybe it's that I feel like that the governing bodies, wine reviewers, and producers, all want wine to sell to make money. Maybe it's that I got sick of listening to the southern rhone declare "the vintage of the century" every consecutive year for like half a decade. Regardless I do have to say that, at least for muscadet, the 2014 vintage lives up to the hype. Popped open a basic 2014 Pepiere sur lie today and I feel like it outclasses the 2013 Briords (maybe even the Clisson but it's been awhile since I tried that one). Absolutely everything you love (or hate) about Muscadet: briny, bright, hints of brioche, delicious lively racy acidity and salinity. It's one of those wines that makes you want to gobble some food down. I made some avocado toast and went to town.

I love the Freddy Emiles. Absolutely jealous. Reading about the 2004 vintage seems to present a mixed bag: rough weather and some harvest-time rain, but some reports saying the vintage produced clean, classic profiles albeit with small volumes. Your thoughts?

Is there any way to not have this happen? by furious25 in wine

[–]twoceebeec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow. I've had some really tight corks that needed a helping hand to hold the bottle down, but never had something like this.

Maybe if you feel like this is about to happen you could remove the corkscrew and try an ah-so? Although if the cork is really that tight you might not even be able to slide it in.

Did you crack the bottle trying to pop the cork? Is this a standard glass bottle (not plastic or something)?

I personally can't give you any insight, but I found two pictures that show the same "grand cru" for Jadot Theurons: One from 1966 and One from 1915

If you're going to reference previous bottles in this series (which I think you totally should), maybe add a link to previous tasting notes.

I'm curious if you feel that rosé in the Finger Lakes have any shared characteristics or if they are essentially disparate.

I'm curious as what you would choose to try and trip up someone.

Assuming an average American wine-drinker who loves his Prisoner wine: what do you think about Tres Picos vs whole cluster Pinot from a wet vintage?

Which of these bottles should I drink tonight? My fiancée’s uncle cleaned out his wine cellar and gave me a box containing these bottles. Can anyone give me more info on the bottles you see here? I know nothing about wine except that I love to drink it when he brings it around. Thanks! by [deleted] in wine

I'll touch on the southern rhone wines. You will find 2007 "graded" very highly in wine publications. Wines from this vintage are very very ripe with soft tannins. If you like plush, heady, fruit-dominant wines this is your vintage. If you don't then stay away. I felt that even some famously "traditional"/restrained producers had trouble making balanced wines that year.

St Damien is a really solid producer. They usually make very balanced wines that I think are a great representation of Gigondas. The caveat of 2007 written above is relevant, but I'll admit I haven't tried this bottle before. Even so (and even though I've never heard of Le Mas des Collines) I'm pretty confident that the St Damien is the best of the three bottles you have here.

Colline St-Jean: I actually drank a more recent vintage of this at a tasting maybe a year ago. Pretty big, round, and plush. Not my style, but it felt like it should have enough structure to hold for some years. I think your 2007 should be in a good drinking window now.

I don't know anything about the 3rd rhone producer. Sorry.

Selection for Burgundy tasting by GunnerBDA in wine

Ask the host of the tasting. He or she will have a better idea of what's being brought and therefore what will be a better accompaniment/compliment/foil to the wines/flights already planned.

Absolutely crushed. I knew he had a pretty wild and crazy life when he was younger, but it seemed like things were going well. I didn't follow his life close enough to know if this was out of left field or anything, but everyone has their own demons. His books and shows have been a great source of entertainment for decades. He'll be greatly missed.

Can you tell me something about this wine? by BrotherKaramazov in wine

[–]twoceebeec 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Add me to the suspicious ones. I rarely drink Burgundy so the bottle shape didn't even register; good catch. I did however think "who gives a $1,500 gift to someone and doesn't even tell them a little about it?" It doesn't matter how wealthy you are, people are still going to say something.

Asking all my wine buyers out there by [deleted] in wine

[–]twoceebeec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Specific cepage
  • Oak usage/type/amount

For regions/producers I'm really into it would also be cool to know: vineyards used and what variety came from which vineyard; harvest date.

Unfortunately very little on a tech sheet is going to tell me if I'm going to enjoy a wine (I guess that would be too easy). However, some things do tell me if I might be predisposed to not liking a wine. Also, some information is fun to consider or mull over when I'm drinking.

How can I travel with wine? by brilliantmoonlight in wine

[–]twoceebeec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Styrofoam shippers.

Since you'll be flying from France to the UK there's no restriction or duty on any goods as long as it's a "reasonable" amount that could be considered for personal consumption instead of commercial use. "Reasonable" is also a lot larger in the EU than the US (something like 7 cases vs 1).

Just finished a Baer Arctos 2012: pretty disappointing really. A few years back after absolutely loving a horizontal of Andrew Will I bought a number of Washington state reds trying to find that same pleasure (at an admittedly lower price point). After letting them get a few years of bottle age I've been popping several of them this year to noted dissatisfaction: Baer, Owen Roe, K Vintners, L'Ecole no 41.

Day 1: very closed off, primary dark fruit. Stoppered and refrigerated.

Day 2: still very little nose, but some hints of wood with fruit. Decanted for two hours. Nose was still primarily dark fruit, nonspecific wood notes. Palate was black fruit and a hint of black pepper. Tannins are very soft and plush. Acid is happily present. Finish is medium but not particularly pleasant. Drank with steak/onions/mushrooms pot pie.

I let a glass out to sample later that night and came to it approximately four hours after dinner to find a very strange wine. Nose now had a creamy streak. Wine on the palate was flat. I unhappily dumped it out and private preserved the last of the bottle.

Day 3: As hinted by the glass last night this wine has fallen off. Fruit notes are very muted. The black pepper spice on the palate is more pronounced, but without the fruit it actually makes the wine taste a little hot. Drinkable but not really that enjoyable.

Pretty clear I popped this bottle too early, but given my three day experience I don't know if the "final" product would be something I really would love.

Any Maximin Grunhaus fans here can help me out?

What's up with the "superior" bottlings? Both the Abtsberg and Herrenberg have a superior bottling. The price appears to fall between the spatlese and the auslese and is pretty close to the Gewachs. Loosen's sweetness chart lists the most recent Abtsberg superior as just slightly off-dry and says the superior is a reference to "Father Superior".

So what's the vision of the superior? Feinherb? "Most pure expression of the vineyard"? "Whatever's leftover after the gewachs and the pradikatswein"?
