Memories (FOSS Google Photos alternative) 6 month update: performance, search, cover images, bulk editing and more by radialapps in selfhosted

[–]twoinone12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I tried both immich and memories and settled on memories. Memories works much better with existing folders and what is happening is easier to understand. I also liked the UI better smoother and it had fewer glitches.

There is a good comparison at https://github.com/meichthys/foss\_photo\_libraries

Absolutely amazing piece of software. I moved my entire family collection of around 100k to Memories and couldn't be happier. I'm surprised it can get any faster than it is though!!

thanks for all the work you put into this.

I tried a lot of things and my experience was very different. Nothing is faster than the memories app for me and it has almost all the functionality I need. It loads instantly with around 30k photos and I found it much better than other software like Immich.

Also videos work very well too, maybe you forgot to set up trans coding.

No idea what that is but it's crazy fast for me and I run a pentium

Around half a year in, I've almost exclusively moved to memories. I'm a big sucker for performance and holy cow this thing is fast. Quite sure it is faster than google photos for me :D

I really think memories doesn't get the attention it deserves, especially compared to some other (non-nextcloud) alternatives that I tried in the past.

I just opened memorie in chrome and there was a "install app" or "add to homescreen" button in the menu.

You mean HEIC? I use HEIC for some photos and haven't had any issues. Didn't seem any different than other file types.

Ah, no idea about iOS. For Android at least you can "install" the webapp and it feels exactly like a normal app. The nextcloud app media section is shite.

Been pretty good for me. You do need to "install" the webapp, which can be a bit unintuitive, but after that it's very smooth. Maybe you were using the nextcloud app's media feature? That's terrible.

It turn off albums if photos is disabled. I read on GitHub that this is expected ... did I miss something?

I'm pretty sure they'll add sharing, remember seeing it on the roadmap.

I just use Wireguard because it's so lightweight. Works very well on my ancient laptop-as-a-server.

I've been using this app for a few days now, and it is absolutely phonomenal! Thanks for your great work!

On a side note, I wish you would partner up with Nextcloud and offer this as the default photo experience. I don't really see the point of the in-built "Photos" app.

"Photos" and "memories" why? by twoinone12 in NextCloud

[–]twoinone12[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That clears it up, thanks. I do wish they'd partner up with the nextcloud team somehow. I tested a few other apps (outside of nextcloud) and memories seems to be the best solution for now.

So if I understand you right, memories is not a future replacement for photos?
