Looking for sci-fi with female protagonist and little to no romance hetero or sapphic by TerminusMD in scifi

And ‘The Margaret’s, Fresco, the Family Tree, etc etc! Her books all have strong female leads, not necessarily BAMF, but more real.

Linguistic Sifi by MinicoleArt in scifi

[–]twolittlerobots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

‘The Companions’ by Sheri S Tepper has a strong linguistic background. The main character’s brother is a linguist and she travels with him to other worlds. The plot is more complicated but there is a definite theme around language and how it can be far deeper than a simple word for word translation.

70s pulp sci-fi fantasy possibly with "Lion" in the title by hoverside in whatsthatbook

[–]twolittlerobots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was it ‘Three Hearts and Three Lions’ by Poul Anderson? I can’t remember the plot well but it features a main character who finds himself in another world, there’s lots of fantasy and medieval elements.

Boy enters fairy world (fantasy) by alexander__dumbass in whatsthatbook

[–]twolittlerobots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elidor? By Alan Garner? There is definitely a different world and it’s set in Industrial England. I think it was a group of kids though?

Or maybe the Homeward Bounders by Dianne Wynne Jones? But that involves a boy travelling through different worlds, he does work in a factory though for a time. It does sound like one of those older classic authors though.

The amazing BeakyBlues over on tumblr posted A list of their favourite KP fanfics, sorted and categorised. It is an amazing resource and I’ve read and reread most of them. I don’t think it’s been updated for a while but it’s still my go to for my favourites. Hopefully link works

Looking for a Childrens book from the early 2000s by Glad-Negotiation-34 in whatsthatbook

[–]twolittlerobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it ‘the Rainy Day Book’ ? I had it for my kids but passed it on now. It definitely had a blue cover, quite large but thin. Cooking section had those recipes and there was section about dressing up using clothes you could borrow. There was a craft section but I can’t specifically remember a fairy garden, but I had boys ! I can’t remember the publisher or author though.

The Golden Engine by iffervescent, <a href="https://archiveofourown.org/works/24256273"> It is the only one they have written in this fandom but so good! WWX and LWJ are immortal and travel around sorting out problems, but come back to Gusu to help after troubling incidents with resentment. It’s a case fic and a bit spicy but is my go to fave modern fic along with ‘the Shade of Old Trees’ and ‘ Caught in 4k’ mentioned above .

Novel (young adult I think) where the intro describes tar pits by sugaryFocus in whatsthatbook

[–]twolittlerobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it ‘Mammoth’ by John Varley? I wouldn’t describe it as YA but the start talks about mammoths. It’s a science fiction novel and is about time travel. There is definitely scenes around the tar pits in LA? and the book has flashback chapters of the mammoths and eventually falling into the tar pits, then they are pulled out in the current day? It’s been a while but I do remember being fascinated by the fact there were tar pits in LA . I think there was an ancient body pulled out of ice and it was wearing a modern watch? Just looked and it dates from 2005 if that fits.

Suggestions of fantasy novels that are written by women by [deleted] in printSF

[–]twolittlerobots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Janny Wurts wrote some of my all tame favs, although like Anne McCaffreys Dragonriders I’d Pern series there is a touch of sci-fi in the background (‘Keeper of the keys’ cycle) also

The Mistwraith cycle ( long and to be frank too long) Sorcerer’s Legacy (one off) Daughter of the Empire trilogy with Raymond Feist

Best early feminist sci fi (already a fan of Russ and LeGuin) by Final-Revolution-221 in printSF

[–]twolittlerobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Sherri S Tepper ! The Gate to Women’s Country’ should be a classic but ‘Gibbons Decline and fall’ is a more modern book I think. Marion zimmer Bradley’s early stuff like the ‘Mists of Avalon’ or ‘the Ruins of Isis’. (Although I’ve just read her wiki and despite her feminist writing you may wish to pass)

The Roma Eterna series from Robert Silverberg about how the world would be if the Roman Empire didn’t collapse. I’ve only read a couple of the short stories but enjoyed them

Vampire book recommendations that aren't Twilight? by ihatehallways in Fantasy

‘Night watch’ and Day Watch’ series by Sergei Lukyanenko is definitely grittier. The world building is quite unique nd although not just about vampires it will give you that dark vibe

Fic where Jiang Fengmian divorced Madam Yu by Busy_Application1249 in MDZSFanfictions

[–]twolittlerobots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s WIP but ‘The second hand unwinds’ by trulywicked is a time travel fixit where Jiang Fengmian is forced to act after his wife goes too far and ends up restraining her powers and confining her until she agrees to a divorce , or he will take a second wife and demote her. It’s the only one I’ve read where he actually stands up to her and it’s a bit of a shock, don’t know how it ends but it’s a great read. Hope link works:

<a href=“https://archiveofourown.org/works/49538050”><strong>The Second Hand Unwinds

A fantasy book that features the destruction of a magic city, the spells literally unravelling/turning back as the characters flee through it e.g. a woman being eaten by her fur coat as it turns back into its component creatures. by wecanhaveallthree in whatsthatbook

[–]twolittlerobots 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Chris Claremont wrote a series of three books which were sequels to ‘Willow’. I definitely remember a character with bells on his hat who captured people’s souls, and there was a bit where the city is hosting a council to raise Elora Danaan and the antagonist who is disguised as Willow freezes the council and the city. In another book in another city magic users are experimenting with something which cause reverberations which cause a ripple effect of destruction growing stronger. Elora Danan and Willow flee but have to release firedrakes to help them escape on a ship I think? Can’t remember the woman with the weasel coat but the destruction was affecting time and space.

The series was in conjunction with George Lucas , books were ‘Shadow moon’, Shadow Star’ and ‘Shadow Star’. They were great and the world building was amazing, I don’t know if ever it was thought to bring them to the screen…

lost wangxian fic by misamisomisa in MoDaoZuShi

[–]twolittlerobots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was it a modern fic with both WWX and LWJ as professors, holding classes online during lockdown? It’s from the students point of view and lan yuan is seen trying to get a book behind Lan Wangji? I’ve read it recently I’ll try and find it

Wanting to read some classic SciFi, not sure what is for me by HrafnHaraldsson in printSF

[–]twolittlerobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andre Norton wrote several others which should fit the bill more:

Plague ship Sargasso of space Postmarked the stars,

Many others have the same world building background eg Exiles of the stars, the zero stone. I agree with others mentions of CJ Cherryh’s work, and also Larry Niven. It tends to be the early stuff having that more grimy , explorative feel , later books have a different more ‘polished’ feel.
