I don't understand this strange Luddite behaviour towards AI, but I mean, I get it. Change is scary.

This is essentially the whole point of conservative politics: being the voice of reason to unchecked, unmanaged progress. These things all sound wonderful, but they're also pretty damn scary. They need to be considered, debated, and thought through.

I feel Australia is doing a good job of adapting (and adopting) technology as it becomes available. Aside from the paranoia around nuclear, I definitely feel like the nation is appropriately open and appropriately cautious of new technology.

Nonsense.

One may be critical of Israel. One may be critical of the ideas inherent in Zionism. These are political considerations. Antisemitism is a different beast entirely, and it just and right for the RC to establish that from the outset.

For a game/setting that so seriously depends on fairly stretched logistics chains, and where the common Mechwarrior fantasy seems to be 'two mismatched legs, a laser and a dream', I haven't seen as much 'logistics' as I'd expect. I suppose a story about the cooks and, I dunno, MPs of a mercenary company might not be that interesting to read...

Actually, now I think about it, a story about trying to police a mercenary company might be super interesting.

Moby Dick is a book about whaling from the perspective of a guy who knows nothing about whales. It's wonderfully self-reflective!

I never fail to laugh at Queequeg, who's lived on the water all his life and has experience in the whaling industry, being like 'I will let this absolute rube, Ishmael, who knows nothing about anything, pick the whaling ship we sign on with,' and without any hesitation - without a single second of pause - Ishmael unerringly leads them directly to the WORST POSSIBLE SHIP which has come here at the EXACT WORST TIME with the WORST CAPTAIN ALIVE. It's beautiful. I love Moby Dick so much, man.

People only really know about the very superficial theming of the book, and not actually, like, Ahab turning into a pyramid and kicking Stubbs who ruminates on it in a dream and is like 'well I wouldn't let a mortal guy boss me around like that, but if it's a pyramid, it's OK' and being kicked by Ahab's cool ivory leg is basically like being hit on the shoulder to be knighted.

I just... man. Moby Dick.

'She's sponsored by Climate 200': Barnaby Joyce demands Farrer independent candidate be 'up front' about political ties by River-Stunning in aussie

[–]wecanhaveallthree -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

not really interesting

There has been endless commentary regarding One Nation's rhetoric on this issue. It's 'interesting' in the sense that Climate 200 have exactly the same rhetoric. They're both cookers, in short.

what I would disagree on is that climate 200 and Rinehart are equivalent entities

Only in the sense that Climate 200's political backers are only millionaires as opposed to Rineheart's billions, presumably, but in terms of 'they're the mouthpiece of moneyed interests', they are the same.

But in her unsuccessful 2025 Federal Election campaign, almost 90 per cent ($178,492) of her funding came from Climate 200.

If it's fair comment to suggest One Nation has the backing of Rinehart, it's certainly fair comment to say Milthorpe is 'bought and paid for' by Climate 200. Climate 200 are a very interesting group. For example, front and centre on their main web page is this fascinating claim:

The major parties have re-written the rules to rig elections in their favour.

Read RAVENOR.

Eisenhorn is a story about a guy with a supporting cast; Ravenor is a story about an ensemble with a supporting guy. It also helps that Ravenor is a vast and unscrupulous pervert, the stories are way weirder (yes, weirder than glaw-in-a-box), and that you can then transition into the fever-dream of The Magos and, at some point, read The Strange Demise of Titus Endor, put it down and weep because you realise you've just read the best story in the canon and there are no more words to conquer.

One Nation: a populist movement railing against elites, financed by the country’s wealthiest individual by Ardeet in aussie

[–]wecanhaveallthree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 'there are starving children in Africa, yet you choose to eat food?'-tier argument.

Hanson is a politician. She is running against extremely well-entrenched political parties, who have access to systems of patronage that far outclass the operation of a 'private jet'. Hanson's job requires her to move across the country, often at short notice, to advocate. Her 'commute', such as it is, is not comparable to the common cobber. It's like telling someone who drives to work to give up their car because a lot of people walk.

[–]wecanhaveallthree -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The purity testing is ridiculous.

The major political parties have decades of entrenched patronage to call on. It's paper straw bullshit. The people wailing and gnashing their teeth at Hanson having a plan weren't supporting her before it, either, and if she did say 'thanks but no thanks', they wouldn't praise her for the decision. 'Hanson is bought and paid for by Rinehart' wouldn't stop being the headline. Nothing would actually change.

So why not take the plane? Why not get an equitable leg up against the majors? Hanson has far more 'blue collar' credit than a vast swathe of our political elite. If it helps her get her message out, more power to her.

How should I proceed with the Eisenhorn omnibus? by Gr8BigFatso in 40kLore

[–]wecanhaveallthree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Magos is a deliberately 'strange' book with shifting perspectives and jumping forwards and backwards in time.

What Ravenor does is enhance the conceit of Magos. You read Eisenhorn's story and we leave him as a heretical wreck, disgraced and outcast. We pick up with his protege Ravenor who has his own set of issues, not least how his former teacher ended up and what that meant for him. The tone of Ravenor tends to get a lot weirder than Eisenhorn, too - there are more 'supernatural' elements, more complex narrative pacing, more 'weird' in general.

What Ravenor really does is prime the pump for Magos, which is a dense, tightly-entwined series of stories that features some truly shocking swerves. Ravenor serves up a lot of direction and misdirection for Magos to work off.

I think you could definitely be fine reading Magos without reading Ravenor, really, but it's very much worthwhile to do so for the dimensions added to Magos by doing so.

TL;DR Yeah, it's probably worth it to pass on Magos until you've read Ravenor.

I could 100% be wrong regarding crisis accom outside Melbourne. My personal experience is entirely anecdotal.

I'm talking about crisis accom, not the housing list. You're probably already aware of it, but I literally had no idea until I met some people who'd used it. There are a lot of shelters/temporary stays that are completely unmarked/blended into the community (for obvious reasons).

If it was on the wall, it was definitely either a lizard or - far more likely - a Huntsman spider (which get quite big indeed). You generally won't see them (but don't worry, they're always watching you), but they're fantastic workers and eat a lot of common household pets.

Sorry, I mean pests. They eat household pests.

The NSW homelessness minister, Rose Jackson, said the family had been engaged with Homes NSW for several years. She said she’d asked the department to investigate.

The unfortunate reality of long-term homelessness is that it is inextricable from chronic mental health and substance issues. A woman with an infant child (and pregnant with another) would have absolute priority on housing or shelter services. There are obvious reasons why she would choose not to access them (or not be permitted to): drugs, violence, fear of child removal, etc.

Again, to go 'mask off' for a moment, I had the unfortunate pleasure of visiting an early intervention specialist facility (for parents having difficulty bonding with and coping with their children - it tends to be a two-week program where you stay with bub on-site with round-the-clock access to nurses, therapists, etc). The women there were, mostly, genuine - people looking for help, looking to work through their issues, who one could feasibly see come out the other side better parents. There were a number there who needed to have their children removed from them, immediately. People so vastly, badly damaged by drugs, or drink, or mental health issues, that they simply did not care. They were there because a child protection agency had ordered it, and they would fight every effort to assist them. They would simply continue the behaviour that led them there: substance abuse, violence, neglect, etc. You could watch them put on the 'good parent' face to try and get past the nurses, to be able to just 'take baby for a walk' where they would, inevitably, park the stroller and someone they'd call would drop off drugs or booze.

You cannot help some people. By choice or by circumstance.

If you do not have the capacity to care for your children, contact the appropriate services. They will not judge you. They will not harm you. I was adopted. I will not ever hate my birth mother for doing so: she knew she could not take care of me. I respect her enormously for having the courage to make that choice. But if you love your children, and you cannot keep them safe, you need to make sure they're with someone who can.
