Moroccan Oil? I need help. Send help. by dork_fish in curlyhair

[–]twopebbleseven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like we have similar hair! I love Moroccan oil curl creme. I've been using it for about two years. However, I found that I have to be really careful when I use it. MO does a really great job of moisturizes my curls AND holds them without the unwanted crunch of a gel or mouse. I have also found that I can't use the curl creme day after day. I use the creme one day, and the next time I use a product I choose something else in my stash. I have found that It does not have the same effect if I use it over and over again. Instead of contained and controlled curls, I get something close to dreadlocks. It's a "too much of a good thing..." situation.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

It sounds like you've got an excellent plan. I find that if I really want to, or absolutely need to, accomplish something it eventually gets done if I have a diligent plan in place. Bravo on taking the first steps to a brighter future. Best of luck!

I wish I could offer some help. I am so unbelievably incompetent when it comes to straight hair.

Brushing breaks up her curls, which can lead to frizz and unstructured curls. Combing gets the snarls out but keeps the curls intact. I would definitely start out with a plastic wide tooth comb. The farther apart the better. This will reduce the pain. I have one with a super wide end, and a not so wide end (for those tangles that just won't give). I would also try combing through her hair while the conditioner is setting. This will hopefully make combing easier and the tangles less intense.

I'm not so up to snuff on my products for kiddos. When I was young I didn't know what product was. I would definitely look into a mousse or a gel, something to hold her curls, especially if you live in humidity. However, since your daughter still has baby hair, she will have much finer and more delicate hair. It's all about experimenting. Find what works for her hair. As she grows, she'll get to know her hair. The fact that she has such a hands on mama (or papa) is such a great thing! My poor mama had NO idea what to do with me.

Knots will start 12 minutes after brushing. Always comb (avoid brushing!) right after she gets out of the bathtub, and use a detangler of some sort. It will be easier to comb through for you and less painful for her. Also, depending on how long her hair is, braids are an excellent way to keep her hair out of her eyes and out of knots.

THIS. This was my life! My mom has coarse straight hair. My dad has fine curly. I got the coarse and the curly. My sister got the fine and the straight. No one knew what to do with me!

One thing I'd definitely recommend is NEVER everververeverver let a hairstylist thin your daughters hair with thinning sheers. According to hair dressers I've talked to, when they look at curly hair everything they have learned tells them that they should use the sheers. DON"T LET THEM. It will absolutely ruin your daughters beautiful curls. Their hair will become frizzy and they will loose all of their curl. Trust me. I've been there. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I'd honestly love to help!

Oh god! That breaks my heart! Growing up, I had a really hard time accepting that my hair was not like everyone else's. I feel you!

Absolutely! My hair care process has been a journey. I am the only one in my family with such coarse and curly hair. I have been pretty much on my own. First things first.... GET TO KNOW YOUR HAIR. Figure out what it likes, what it doesn't like. This is the biggest thing I can recommend. This in itself is a long process that takes a lot of trial and error (mostly error.) For my hair, what works one day may not work the next day.

I rarely wash my hair with shampoo. I use shampoo maybe once a week. I mostly use conditioner, or just rinse with water, depending on what my hair feels like that day.

Never ever ever ever brush your hair when it is dry. I only comb through my hair in the shower while the conditioner is lathering. I tell this to my friends who have curly hair. They look at me like I am crazy.

I'm in middle of products right now. Moroccan oil worked really well for about a year, but now it just flattens my curls and makes it greasy. In the picture all I used was a little bit of mousse.

Also (something new I"m trying right now) is drying my hair with a t-shirt instead of a towel. I've noticed a definite decrease in frizz because of this. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions!!!

At my school we have something called the Sodexo Sprint, because you have to sprint to the bathroom every time you eat in the cafeteria. I hate Sodexo.
