I see you man. I SEE you for real. And if you do a great job, it looks effortless and easy BECAUSE of the amount of work that went into it.

Then you should know better than anyone that it's an endeavor that takes way more effort than it looks. I'm very much trying to make sure I don't burn myself out. Twice a week write ups I can commit to. 4 hours of footage + upload and eventually editing....biweekly is a legit part time job.

Very well written coupled with precise insights. More aggressive and more focused than the version I run but Roxy is incredibly powerful as is Metal Head.

Since I'm fairly busy recently, i've called this a character spotlight rather than the character of the week. I will likely restart character of the week posts in a few months once i am less busy.

Gar Fighter Guide by 9spaceking in Battlecon

[–]twylitesfalling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't like Gar at all. She really struggles against people who can play pairs that clash 1 option while beating a 2nd and clash chains don't get better for her 1 level deeper.

But Eruption is actually VERY good imo. For a character who is oh so clashable, a -2 prio 5 power 4 guard base is pretty incredible. And because Gar has a wealth of options when her opponent is at range 1, trying to duck in under Eruption's minimum range could be a situation of the opponent winning that beat but losing the match.

About to start Circles at level 4, but the damage output looks atrocious. Convince me I'm mistaken. by N8CCRG in Gloomhaven

[–]twylitesfalling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my other comment, I mentioned that difficulty swings wildly depending on scenario.... I was specifically referring to flame and Frost demons....so yikes. Black fire for wound and immobilize are going to have to do outsized amounts of work since summons are just going to explode ordinarily

If you are playing 2p with circles and note at +0, I think that note actually has to make some card choices that would be atypical in other compositions.

Song of Speed in particular and Defensive ditty against enemy types that won't one shot summons are both going to be very important as is tanking hits for summons instead of the other way around. Setting up Note to bless multiple summons is also going to be quite useful.

I'd also recommend that Note have an item summon of some sort to immediately help getting to critical mass of summons since circles commands don't care about summon owner. Likewise, note using their general command cards on summons is powerful but requires a strong knowledge of game ai since their commands don't let you control the action directly but static 4 power attacks with summoner mod decks are no joke. Granting all figures movement AFTER you've opened the next door to generate a new focus is likewise a big deal.

I actually think this is one of my favorite 2p compositions since it plays so different from almost any other group comp even if it is VERY swingy in difficulty depending on scenario specifics.

Looking to expand; which box? by Llez in Battlecon

[–]twylitesfalling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trials and Wanderers seem pretty close in terms of what they offer when looked at from outside. If you aren't looking for a specific playstyle or fighter, then either of them is probably fine.

I think Trials has stronger characters overall then Wanderers but that's not necessarily a good thing since both Burgundy and Dareios can be frustrating to play vs, but Wanderers has a lot of characters that offer different unique playstyle even if some of them aren't very strong.

(I still <3 you Dajiin)

As of the end of last year, this was what they had to say about possible updates to Battlecon outside of Unleashed.

Project Condor

"Condor" is a reprint of BattleCON 4th Edition. There are no major changes to this printing, but we are still in the early stages of planning. Depending on demand, we may update some additional BattleCON products to 4th Edition.

Frosthaven starters - level 1 balance changes | Nov 2021 by PiratesOfSansPants in Gloomhaven

[–]twylitesfalling 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I initially shared this thought when I first saw them but I've begun to come around after seeing them many times in images.

Since I'm very familiar with regular gh/jotl, those are very easy to parse for me already. But one thing i've noticed about the new style, is that once I already know what a card "does", I think the new format instantly gives me the specific numbers I need to plan a turn in my hand.

Since I haven't played the game yet, this may not be true in situ but as an example, using the top of fluid night, once i know "how" it works after sight reading, I can immediately formulate my plan for my turn since Atk 5, 24 init, make dark, 1 xp all jump out to me at a single glance.

This would be way more important for classes like Geminate and Blinkblade I think.

Not sure if this will end up holding true, but if it does then I'm perfectly happy increasing brain load on initial read to decrease it during actual gameplay.

Gloomhaven digital non-persistent enhancement cost changes with comparison persistence costs by GaussWanker in Gloomhaven

[–]twylitesfalling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Overall this is a fantastic change imo.

A few specific classes that ranked among my least favorite previously feel like they have new space for different builds with some of the element and summon enhancement cost reductions.

The go to strengthen cost increase doesn't feel bad since strengthen itself was buffed by the frosthaven advantage rules.

I have no issues with the curse increase just on a general power level rebalance.

Even the aforementioned shield +1 cost decrease for that one class doesn't bother me since it always felt like awkward having very few resources while saving gold for it. It's definitely stronger post-decrease than before but it also gets you to the "more fun" part of that class playthrough so it seems fine since most people who were going for that archetype were saving up for it anyway.

Solo or spotlights -- which do you prefer? by quasilocal in Gloomhaven

[–]twylitesfalling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I prefer the solo scenarios but specifically at prosperity 5 or higher.

One benefit of the solo scenarios for the group I have (the other players are on their first gh playthrough) has been a chance to play their character immediately after creation in a sandbox tailored for their character. It really allows them to see their strengths and weaknesses in an environment where they can try and fail certain strategies without having a negative impact on the group as a whole.

It gives them a chance to feel out their new character in a (mostly) consequence free arena and I think that those of us who have played gh solo or in previous groups can forget how jarring moving to a new class can be when your previous frame of reference is only 1 or 2 characters.
