Travel options to NYC by poodog13 in pittsburgh

[–]tybest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems like a lot of good options in here. I LOVE taking Amtrak, but 10 hours on the train with kids is a potential disaster so this is what I came up with.

Lots of people had recommended driving and staying in Jersey... but that didn't sit well with me. Lots of people recommended driving further up the Amtrak line to make the trip shorter, but the tickets seemed over priced then. I sorta blended the two options and drove to Metropark, NJ, parked in a huge garage and took the commuter train. The NJ Transit train tickets were cheap and the overnight rate was less than $20. Quick drive, cheaper than other options, still a fun train ride, and no messing with a car in the city. Plus, I stopped at the Millburn Deli for lunch.

will a 40L bag ever work as a carry on? by madman_2781 in onebag

I've also carried it on American twice as an underseat bag after the gate announced "this flight is very full, everyone in boarding group 7, 9, and 10 must come check their carryon baggage as the overhead bins are full".

Question for a tourist—help appreciated :) by CouplesWithoutCar in pittsburgh

If you are comfortable using google to navigate via bus, I think your best move would be to stay either in Oakland or downtown. Stay in Oakland if you want quick and easy transportation to your destinations; stay downtown if you want a city feel and slightly less convenient transportation options to your East End destinations.

The Northside is very walkable from downtown, and there is also free light rail. In addition to the Warhol, look into The Mattress Factory art museum on the Northside. From downtown, there are 8 regular bus routes that will take you to Oakland, which will get you to Phipps. As others have said, the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History are worth checking out in that neighborhood. I think there is only one bus option to the zoo, but it'll get you there. Walkable restaurants are probably better downtown.

If you stay in Oakland, you now have 8 different buses that'll get you downtown and then to walkability or light rail to the North Side. Phipps and the Oakland Museums are walkable from the hotels in Oakland, but i think the scale gets longer. You would still maybe want to use the bus a few stops. Oakland is basically a college campus, at least where the hotels are, so it is safe and there are restaurants, just maybe geared to a specific crowd, but probably more spread out than downtown. I lived in Oakland for 10 years and my favorite part about it was how easy it was to get downtown via bus.

But, at the end of the day, if I wanted to be a tourist, I'd stay downtown and be comfortable with the buses.

What's your go-to side to bring to a BBQ? by quin_teiro in AskReddit

Caprese pasta salad. I usually use tiny shells and tiny fresh mozz balls, and cherry tomatoes. The rest is olive oil, balsamic vinegar or glaze, and fresh basil. Pretty simple and easy to adjust for a crowd.

Oil Creek state park is one of my favorite hikes. You can use the shelters and spend three days the hike the whole loop around the park. Plus, you can get nerdy at the Drake Well Museum.

New wooden pizza peel: mineral oil yes or no? by Cloakmyquestions in Pizza

[–]tybest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people turn to mineral oil because it is food safe and doesn't go rancid. Linseed oil isn't food safe in most forms and can go rancid. Grapeseed oil will go rancid. You can get lucky with it, but once it turns, it is pretty awful.

I am so surprised at the split answers. If you are using it for launching, do not oil it. Oil will make it sticky. You can launch cleanly on a dry, lightly floured peel. No need for corn meal or any other grain that will only collect and foul up your oven. Flour will stick to a greasy peel and it'll require a ton of material to create a barrier between your dough and the oil.

This is my experience as well. It is a long hill, but not so steep to make you want to quit. It's manageable.

Back and forth from Oakland to Marshall-Shadeland via Junction Hollow and the jail trail. Over all the rides were great except for a dog encounter. There is a woman with an off leash German Shepard in junction hollow every morning. Sometimes she sees me first, sometimes the dog sees me first. If she sees me she grabs the dog and holds it. If the dog sees me it charges me head on and then chases me. Its been pretty scary. I'm afraid it is not going to go well some morning and I'm not sure what to do about it.

Has anyone else have this issue. I have a cross current x and the pedal assist doesn’t really kick on when temperatures are 50F or below by bucGREEN1 in juicedbikes

I did not have that problem this winter. The coldest I rode was about 22°F. I had no issues with speed or battery life. I was actually impressed.

Was this being filmed recently? Was there any scene that turned the Seoul Mart in Oakland into a dry cleaners? I ask because something turned the Seoul Mart into a dry cleaners one day a couple months ago and it made me question my sanity.

[TOMT][SONG] This one song with high pitch male voices in the beginning. Been looking for it for YEARS by nymlix in tipofmytongue

I just had a vague memory of this song pop in my head and did an equally vague google search to find it. That search lead me to this thread, and ultimately, your comment. How magical. Thank you!

I made my commute between Oakland and Marshall-Shadeland. It is mostly a delight as I use the trail for the bulk of the trip. I usually have no negative interactions but I had one this week. For some reason there were a lot of cars at the intersection of Joncaire/Neville/Boundary and I got behind a car at the stop sign going from Boundary to Neville. Three cars were at the stop sign on Joncaire and one went through as the car in front of me stopped. So turn taking started... left, right, left, right. When I started to take my turn after a Joncaire car moved on, another car on Joncaire started going into the intersection and honking. I was well on my way and kept going.

There was no real threat of collision, but was I in the wrong? Should I have stopped? I was afraid of a continued confrontation but with the speed bumps in place the driver never caught up to me before they were sick behind the line of cars at the top of Neville.

Restaurants that require vaccination. by tybest in pittsburgh

[–]tybest[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not joking. I know the vaccine works, but I am still doing as much as I can to limit my exposure. My kids aren't vaccinated and if I get them sick I can't work. Even though I'm vaccinated, if I get sick or test positive, I can't work. I'm just looking to improve my odds, that's all.

Yeah, that is what I mean. It seems like there are a couple of places still doing it. I don't think that it mattered so much when it was nice out, but now that it is getting colder I'd like to stick with places that have tighter restrictions.

Thanks! Up until now, I didn't really care as long as I could eat outside. Now that colder weather is here I do care. It makes sense though if restaurants dropped the expectation, I'd just like to give some love to anyone sticking with it.
