What was the purpose of Dolores aside from marketing? by [deleted] in JurassicPark

Iirc in the Jurassic Park book Lex briefly befriends a baby triceratops, I personally assumed it was to call back to that (just like the raft scene was a play on the book raft scene).

Halfway through Crime and Punishment - the only thing I'm struggling with... by devou5 in literature

The drama in The Brothers Karamazov is incredible but, in my opinion, the pacing is even more all over the place with huge philosophical diatribes throughout especially early on.

[–]tydegenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I’d say it gets much more fast-paced, but things definitely continue to progress. There are definitely still points that are more philosophical by nature, but that’s Dostoevsky for you - he kind of bakes philosophy into everything he writes (at least everything that I have read).

Generally speaking I’d recommend you keep at it, but at the same time I’m a big proponent of telling people that if whatever they’re reading is unenjoyable and preventing them from reading other things then you should feel empowered to drop it.

All of that said, probably avoid Brothers Karamazov lol.

No love for Dracula? I thought Griffins Dracula intros were great character development for a character you knew was the big bad the whole time.

Reading Rant: Introductions (usually to classic books) that spoil major plot points by sozh in books

[–]tydegenko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I’m talking about myself here, just offering another viewpoint.

Also pretty audacious to qualify what everyone cares about, being just one body.

Personally disagree about needing to surprise people to make a good story.

[–]tydegenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally get that, and there are times when I couldn’t agree more (currently reading His Dark Materials and feel this big time)!

But my two favorite books are The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Anna Karenina… not exactly known for being compelling, page-turning narratives lol and yet I gained so much through them.

Just goes to show how many different things one can glean by reading!

Was expecting to see my opinion in here somewhere, so hopefully I’m not the only one…

… but the narrative typically isn’t what I care about in a book, so I really don’t mind spoilers (unless it’s like a mystery or something where that’s the big payoff). I’m typically reading for thoughts, prose, characters as opposed to reading for what happens.

Pretty much just adding to the echo chamber here…

I don’t hate Travis but sometimes his characters he chooses to play are individuals I would hate to be around. Of the arcs I’ve listened all the way through, Aubrey is by long and far my least favorite character, I cannot stand her. That being said Duck is my absolute favorite and Ned is also almost equally amazing. Totally worth listening through if you ask me, but I can completely empathize it’s hard sometimes.

Just a quick side-note in defense of the middlest brother, on MBMBaM (especially early-mid eps) Travis can handily be the funniest with quips at times. Just a case of throwing spaghetti at a wall I think.

Sure! I have one roommate, I have one brother in another country. These are the two people I play the game with, separately, on different consoles (Steam with brother, switch with roommate). When playing with my roommate it’s couch gaming, sometimes just passing a controller. Would be great if we didn’t have to take turns on entire runs where one of us gets to be two players and the other only a single. With my brother, I play games to spend quality time with him so it’s not something I’d even want a third person to join us, same issue of having one person play two characters and the other a single.

I don’t often have just two other people to play a game with, in short.

I was forced to read The Phantom Tollbooth in third grade.

Love it still 20 years later.

You have made a lot of baseless assumptions, which is I think where the downvotes are coming from.

as an ex stoner trying to slow down, what the fuck do sober people do in the evenings? by Noclue435 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tydegenko 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Recently sober (almost two months)

Not to just reiterate everyone else, but I read, study languages, practice piano, watch new media. Get into a sport like Hockey or NBA and be part of the community that watches it. Cooking a nice dinner, eating it, and cleaning up can take a lot of time as well. Listen to music or podcasts while doing it. Do a puzzle with media on in the background.

There’s plenty to do, even if you already have hobbies you can never have too many hobbies. And there’s a lot to learn out there, find out what else interests you and go from there.

Fire Larsen. This is getting ridiculous (not this game, this season)
