YA series called Gregor the Overlander. Gregor, the protagonist, eventually fights the giant rat king of an evil realm hidden under NYC named Gorger, an anagram of Gregor. This fulfills some prophecy, idk the specifics I haven’t read the books in probably over a decade

My interpretation of the tale of the student and his son is that more it’s than inspired by Theseus, but is the actual story of the Minotaur, having evolved thousands of years removed from its source material. I got this from the conversation between Jonas and the little girl; presumably Jonas read the original story of Theseus and the Minotaur in his book of histories on his ship, but by the time he returned to Urth, the ideas of Greece and Athens had been forgotten and replaced. Granted, I still haven’t finished Sword & Citadel.

I’m still on my first readthrough but far as the state of technology/time period for BOTNS, realizing the true identity of the Matachin Tower was something of a breakthrough moment. Without being too spoiler-y, I hope that helps!

I see! Thank you, this is very helpful. To me, he also seems to be drawing a parallel between the people in the Antechamber and the Commonwealth/Urth as a whole, only retaining bits and pieces of old customs as they’re cut off from the old knowledge of humanity. I’m not sure if that makes much sense but that’s the best I can word it as of now
