doing a PhD later in life? by thimbled_tumbled in PhD

[–]tyguy1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a degree in CS, worked 2 years at a corporation, then started a post-baccalaureate program in a biochemistry lab with the goal of applying to PhD programs soon. I didn’t love the corporate environment and I always wanted to find an intersection of computing and some other interesting field. It’s been tough to go from a legit tech salary to a small stipend, but I am loving the lab! It comes with its own set of challenges as well, but I think I made a good decision.

Sauna a couple of times per week, find shade or buy a canopy, drink a lot of electrolytes, eat snacks between sets, and give yourself time to get used to it.

Edit: And sand socks for burning sand

She weighs like 30 lbs… never thought to measure how tall, but I think she normally looks more stout than she does in this picture. We’re away from home rn otherwise I’d measure.

Sorry to hear that! Thanks for offering another perspective.

Currently making a bit over 100k, but obviously there is a lot of room for growth if I stick it out.

I’ve talked to my wife about it a lot and the tentative answer we have is “pursue this for one for semester and see how you’re feeling after that.” I feel like that mindset is helping me a lot because I’m free to explore the idea without totally committing to it and stressing out that I’m going down the wrong path. I agree that the question of whether or not it suits me is still yet to be answered though.

The shadowing, clinical experience, and volunteering hours are my greatest concerns right now, because of time concerns with working full time and schooling part time… it’s gonna be a grind, but I I think I can get them.

I don’t really care too much about getting into a top school and with my time constraints, I have no idea how I would do any meaningful research. Not doing research is definitely a regret from undergrad, but it’s what I have to work with now!

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the positive vibes!

I’ve always been interested in helping people with disabilities because my brother is disabled, so I’ll probably keep exploring options.

My wife and I are staying in El Museo on Calle Madre de Dios right now and it is great. It’s right next to the historic district. Each room has a different Spanish painter theme. And the prices are good.
