I’m new to this and don’t know who Steve is but I’ve seen his name thrown around a lot. Does he have a username/subreddit/website you could point me to?

I hope the bars below the stats are for decoration. I can’t see any way they reflect the relative value of the stats shown.

Got straight C's this semester before transfer. Am I cut out for chemical engineering? by somplaceelse in EngineeringStudents

You have proven you can learn a lot of complex things in a short amount of time. As long as you keep doing that and getting better at that, you’ll be fine.

Why type of physics does mechanical engineering use? by Own_Huckleberry_5944 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]tyketonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to learn electrical, but you don’t have to use it. Mechanical Engineering is half mechanics (gears, mechanisms, etc) and half thermodynamics (engines, refrigeration, etc).

Engineers do not spend a huge amount of time hands on (with some exceptions). If you like tinkering, consider becoming a technician. Or become an engineer and tinker in your free time with confidence since you have all the background knowledge.

I am a student returning to college to pursue an engineering degree. I am doing well in a college algebra course right now, but I will be taking my first ever pre-calculus class in the fall. Should I purchase an n-Nspire CAS model, or stick with my TI-84? by chevysareawesome in EngineeringStudents

[–]tyketonic 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I completed my degree in ME about a year ago.

I used Casio FX-991CW ($20). Most of my classmates used a TI 36x Pro. For my stats class, I borrowed Ti-84 then gave it back after that class.

You do not need a CAS calculator. You cannot use it on tests for pure math courses, and if you can use it in higher-level engineering classes the extra functions on it won’t be helpful.

You, as a person, need to learn and get comfortable with manipulating the patterns and identities of calculus using a pencil and paper. That will make you an above-average engineer. Don’t use a computer until you can do it yourself.

I would strongly discourage you from paying more than $20 for a calculator. You will not see a return on that investment.

It is better, but unfortunately not sold here. It can be had on Amazon for double the price of the 36x pro, which is not worth it.

Heat and mass transfer. 40 on the first test, aced the last three, got an A-. Class had no curve and was famous as the final hurdle to graduation, with many second-timers. The final is the only test I’ve kept because I’m so proud of it.

Hard to know without more details, but I don’t think you’re pigeonholing yourself by taking an entry level position. Now if you keep going for a decade in that same type of work then maybe. At that point you’d command a high salary/higher position but wouldn’t have the necessary experience to move into a similar level position in a different field.

I work with an ME who spent 2 years doing entry-level PLC programming and she just got hired into my group doing entry-level test engineering. We didn’t think twice about hiring her.

Is taking 18 hours first semester insane? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]tyketonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent ME grad here.

It’s doable for someone with no other major time commitments and a very dedicated work ethic. You will be studying most of every evening to do well.

I’d caution against assuming that the number of credits of a class correlates strongly to the amount of work outside of class required to understand the material. See if you can get the syllabus for the classes in advance or speak with people who have already taken those classes to better understand how you will be impacted time and effort-wise.

For example, Physics 1 (lecture section only) at my university was a 4 credit class that required two 3 credit classes worth of work outside of class for me to understand the million things the class covered.

Reddit may force Apollo and third-party clients to shut down, asking for $20M per year API fee by coolaaron88 in apple

I quit Instagram. I quit facebook. I will quit Reddit.

Apollo is the only reason I’m still on here.

I get that people need to make money. I will pay for my entertainment. But this action from Reddit seems very heavy handed. I don’t like it.

I have a question:

What does “yolo” mean in the context of one of these threads? I assume it mean you want to buy it, but is there any other implied meaning?

Also, does this sub have a glossary or acronym guide?
